Wow. . .just wow. You're amazing. Even though it was a work of fiction, I feel like it answered so many questions I had about Itachi. It will now be twice as difficult to write the version I had planned because I'll keep thinking about this one. I can't tell you how much I love your work, how everything just fits together so easily. When I'm reading I'm not really thinking about the mechanics, so when I finally step back at the end and survey the piece as a whole I'm blown away by the simultaneous simplicity and complexity of the logic, the plot, the characterization. I'm not left at the end thinking "it could have gone like this." My solitary thought is "this is it, this is what happened." A brilliant piece of writing.

This was truly an amazing piece of work. I personally loved how you switched Mikoto and Fugaku's role in this story. Usually you see Fugaku as the one pushing Itachi to greatness and Mikoto wanting to keep Sasuke as the all sweet innocent boy that he was, the change was truly interesting. You're view into Itachi was simply wonderful, not many can write Itachi but you've managed to do so and you did it wonderfully. This has become one of my favorite Itachi/Sasuke stories thus far. ^_^

There are many fics that I refer to as brilliant. Now I like to say brilliant--kind of rolls off the tongue with a natural brogue to it. However, I find myself wanting to say that this fic is brilliant, but over usage has rendered the comment so very short of what I really want, even need, to say about this fic. This exploration of Itachi's point of view--his motivations, his feelings, his logic--exceeds any other attempt that I have ever read. It seems to be the key for all the mysteries--why doesn't Itachi kill Sasuke; why does Sasuke, a prodigy and a genius, graduate with his age-mates; does Itachi truly kill his family solely as a measure of strength; how did Itachi become what he has become?

At first, I wasn't sure I liked the ending, but I reread a few times, and I found myself thinking, "how else would it end?" And I can't think of anything that would be so succinct and well-wrapped. I decided it's melancholic but appropriate. Also, I usually don't read the quotes or even the songs in songfics because often I find they don't add anything to a piece, and they often take away something--whether that be flow, comprehension, or some other element. I found I wanted and needed to read the quotes you included. I skipped them at first, but then I read the one on the end and decided I better go read the one at the beginning; they were a very nice touch.

It's just about seamless. Because I am so impressed with this, though, I'm going to nitpick. How does this presentation of Itachi explain why Itachi tells Sasuke, "It's because you lack hatred"?

Besides that, and you may even have an answer in there that I didn't quite pick up on first time through, I loved it, loved it, loved it.
For lack of a better term, it was brilliant.
