Baki watched the young man as realization of his helplessness dawned. He loved the way fear worked its way into those wonderfully expressive eyes. Seeing his prey fall apart at the end was always one of the killer’s favorite pastimes. Except this time was different somehow.

Hayate didn’t try to run; the fool actually made a fight of it. Desperately tugging on the sword caught by Baki, defiance glinting in dark depths, washing away the temporary terror. The boy fought him without surrender. That in itself was unusual. For the first time in more than a decade, Baki felt a stirring.

Added to the attraction was the young man’s strong body, his knowledge and skill with a sword, and a beautifully willful spirit. Orochimaru would no doubt think the Leaf Ninja worthless; however, a long dormant part of Baki’s mind knew uses for one such as he.

Still considering the idea, Baki unleashed his wind attack and tossed the useless metal weapon aside. Unlike the blade of a sword, nothing could stand before the Blade of the Wind. Not for very long anyway. Soon the youth would die. But was that what he truly wanted?

So before him, writhing as flesh was shredded, was a warrior who’d managed to interest the Sand Ninja in a way no other had for a generation. Baki mulled over a new idea.

His Lord would not mind if he kept a captive. In fact, Orochimaru might welcome having someone they could question. At the very least they could steal the sword technique from the Ninja’s body should things not work out. Yes, keeping the boy alive had far more advantages than killing him.

Quickly he called off his attack and watched as Hayate staggered yet remained on his feet; an amazing show of endurance in the Sand Ninja‘s opinion. During the contest he’d looked sickly with no hint at how strong he could be. Few could stand after being under the Wind Blade for so long. Baki watched with undisguised interest. What would happen now?

Hazy, agony filled eyes searched for something and paused when they fell on the discarded sword; moving like one underwater, the boy tried to dive for his weapon. Half dead yet refusing to accept defeat. Now Baki was certain he had to have the Leaf Ninja. If only for a night or two. Just long enough to see that amazing spirit shatter. Watch it splinter leaving the ninja forever broken.

A single kick knocked the weapon out of reach, drawing a whimper from Hayate as he saw his last chance sliding across the roof. Despair filled the Leaf ninja. There was no way he could take on someone like this man; he was going to die here and never be able to warn his clan. The battle was done; as was he.

“Finish it, you bastard,” Hayate rasped, collapsing in heap. No strength remained for even a last act of defiance.

“Finish it?” Baki’s smirk could be heard. “What makes you think this is over?”

Confusion settled on young features. Why would an enemy let him live?

“You want to torture me?” Why didn’t Baki fear the noise would attract others? Sooner or later someone would notice their battle or just something strange about two people on the top of a building so late at night. And what about Hayate’s screams? He wasn’t simply going to quietly allow the foreign ninja to hurt him. What could he hope to gain? It did not make sense!

Baki crouched next to him causing Hayate to flinch unconsciously; a predatory smile graced the visible half of his face. “Torture? You might think of it as that at first. Perhaps you may even fight me for awhile.”

Hayate searched the older man’s half-covered face for some clue, an idea of what the man meant. Yet he couldn’t begin to understand what motivated this strange ninja. Why did hew thw this out?

Without warning, Baki seized the younger man’s throat, closing a major artery. There was barely enough time to register the attack before lovely, shadowyes yes began to flutter closed. Once his prisoner was unconscious, Baki bound him and his wounds then went back to where Kabuto waited for him. It was easy to convince the spy to aid him. Together they retrieved the body of the Sound ninja killed by Garaa.

Kabuto’s special technique allowed him to alter the facial structure of anyone, even the dead. Switching clothes was also simple and gave both men a look at almost flawless pale skin; something on the traitor’s face made Baki growl but he held back. The silver-haired man was still useful. And if he ended up not wanting thfianfiant Leaf warrior, giving him to Kabuto was better than killing him; a possibly valuable asset would be alive.

Before the sun came close to rising, an almost perfect duplicate of Hayate lay cut to pieces on the roof. Only a person who was familiar with Hayate’s entire body could tell the difference. Kabuto delivered the helpless prisoner to other Sand ninjas waiting outside the village. By the time the Leaf clan was destroyed, Hayate would be at his new home, properly restrained.

Soon, his Master would have everything he wanted and Baki might just have a new toy. One last piece of the Leaf Clan to torture for his clan’s humiliation these last years. Laughing softly, he pondered what he’d done to deserved so much fun.
