Prologue
”Where is he?!” Kakashi could feel himself swelling from annoyed and frantic to angry and hysterical. Tsunade continued to eye him warily over steepled fingers, seemingly calm and colleted.
“They took him, Kakashi.”
“Hokage-sama, you need to tell me where.” When silence followed his demand, Kakashi slammed his fists down on her desk. “Tell me where!” His voice was booming and vicious. Inwardly, Kakashi winced at his behavior. He didn’t usually fly off the handle like this.
“We’re sending out an ANBU squad to track them tonight. I’ll send off a team of Jounin to trail them tomorrow morning.” Tsunade said in that same brisk, superior tone, her eyes leveled on Kakashi’s own. She noted that his headband was gone. It had been a very long time since she had seen Obito’s eye.
“That’s not good enough!” Kakashi heard himself scream again and he began to pace, to get out as much anger as possible before he became blinded with it. But perhaps it was too late for even that. “I’ll go with ANBU.”
“Kakashi, you know I can’t do that. Go home. Get some sleep. Tomorrow morning, you will captain a team to go after them. You’re no good to me when you’re this upset.” Tsunade sat back in her chair and rubbed the bridge of her nose. She couldn’t handle this stress right now. Kakashi was damn stubborn.
“You don’t seem to understand. I know these two. I taught them. No ANBU squad is going to be able to stop them!”
Tsunade leaned forward a little on her desk, blonde brows perking a little. “Do you really think Sasuke could kill Uzumaki Naruto?” Tsunade couldn’t even get rid of that little shit, no matter how hard she tried. Her smirk faded on her lips when she saw Kakashi’s grim expression. He conveyed it well, even with his mask.
“Yes, Hokage-Same. I believe he can. He’s been with Orochimaru for three years. He is no longer a citizen of Konoha, but an enemy to it.” It made Kakashi’s stomach twist to actually say that out loud, but he this was a very urgent situation and Naruto was in grave danger.
“Well, then…” Tsunade shook her head with a resigned sigh. “What do you suggest we do?”
“…I have a plan.”
“Do you mind telling me what it is?”
“Actually, I do.”
“Kakashi, you need to tell me your plan of action if I am going to let you go after them alone.” Tsunade could feel a vein in her temple beginning to throb.
“Well, I can’t. Because you’ll strongly forbid it.”
“Then you can’t go.”
“Okay.” Kakashi shrugged, a silver brow raising.
Tsunade narrowed her eyes, standing up slowly. Too much had happened today. She hadn’t eaten or slept and knew she needed to heal a rather large cut on her shoulder. And now Kakashi was doing this to her. “Okay. Then I will see you here tomorrow.”
“Sorry, Hokage-sama. I won’t be here.” Kakashi shoved his hands in his pockets, his eye half lidded in that ever-bored expression. He turned, beginning to stroll away, tossing a hand over his shoulder in a wave.
“Hatake Kakashi! You had -better- be in my office tomorrow morning! I mean it! If you go after Naruto without my permission, the consequences will be dire!” Tsunade crumpled back into her chair, a hand held to her forehead and her eyes closed. She, of course, would not punish Hatake Kakashi. Unless he failed with this ‘great plan’ of his. Then his head would roll.
Chapter One
Kakashi stepped out of the blistering cold and into the cabin, which seemed to be even colder, just without the wind. He couldn’t remember a time when his body ached so badly. Traveling for three days really took its toll on him.
His journey had begun right after he had left Tsunade’s office and he had called upon Pakkun to track the ANBU squad. It had been extremely easy, as he suspected it would be. Finding Orochimaru wasn’t the hard part, it was staying with him that would prove to be the greater task.
After only a few hours of darting through the trees in pursuit, the canine had stopped abruptly, claiming he smelled death. Kakashi held his breath as he jumped down to the ground, towards the huddled body a small distance away. When he saw it was a member of ANBU, he released his breath. It hadn’t been Naruto. It did not uplift his spirits however. On the contrary, Kakashi felt his stomach weigh down with a cold, sickening stone.
Kakashi propped the corpse against a tree, said a silent prayer, and continued on.
Pakkun led Kakashi towards the mountains, where winter still reigned over everything. Finding shelter was particularly hard, regardless of his survival training. The blizzards were a frequent visitor for the Jounin and on the third day, Kakashi was actually considering returning to the village for more proper equipment.
And that’s when he came upon the cabin. Pakkun still insisted he could smell Orochimaru, Sasuke, and Naruto, even through the constant snowstorms.
In the cabin, there was a cot, with an eroded sleeping roll at the end of it. There was a handmade fireplace in one corner and judging by the mold Kakashi noticed on some of the rocks, it wasn’t made very well. There was a table, with one chair, a toilet, and a sink.
“Bare necessities, eh?” Kakashi smirked bitterly beneath his mask and trudged towards the cot, dropping his knapsack on it. He wasn’t at all surprised to see rats fleeing out from beneath it.
“Don’t be picky. This is a blessing. Now, maybe you’ll be able to cook me a proper meal.” Pakkun retorted, shivering in the corner. His small teeth were bared and chattering.
The Jounin took a long look around the one-roomed establishment, breathing out slowly.
”Get out of here, Naruto! Sakura’s hurt! She can’t get out on her own!”
“I’m not leaving you right now, Kakashi-Sensei! Sasuke’s with him!”
“Naruto. Please understand me. Get Sakura out of here. She may die if you don’t. Teammates come first. Remember?”
Kakashi shook his head a little. No, he didn’t need to be remembering this right now. What was important was a good night’s sleep and a fresh start tomorrow morning. Kakashi knelt to begin preparing a fire.
“Orochimaru-sensei…”
“What is it, my pet…?” Serpentine eyes slid open, almost glowing with their own light through the darkness.
Sasuke slid up the pale, naked chest, to rest his chin against the curve of Orochimaru’s shoulder. He gazed at the man, studying the slim shape of his nose and marveling at the ever-youthful and yet seemingly all-knowing face. Sasuke’s gaze softened a little.
“Naruto is dim witted and awkward. Why did we go after him?”
Orochimaru smirked and sunk further back into his chair, bringing his arms up to wrap around Sasuke and draw him closer in his lap. Orochimaru craved the boy’s warmth and scent. “Because, Sasuke…” He purred on a low voice, “He has Kyuubi. I want it, the same way I wanted your magnificent Sharingan.”
Sasuke narrowed dark eyes and couldn’t help but glare up at his sensei. Ebony hair, that hung before his face in threads, shifted to his cheeks with an irritated brush of his hand.
Jealousy really wasn’t Sasuke’s thing. There wasn’t much for him to be jealous -of- in all actuality. But Uzumaki Naruto had always been Sasuke’s rival. There was a passion within the boy, his ridiculous “Way of the Ninja”, that Sasuke secretly wanted but knew he would never have. It was very irritating, the way Naruto never seemed to give up. What was more annoying, was it seemed Naruto always seemed to come out on top in the end.
Sasuke smirked. Well, almost always. The punk had been lucky Sasuke had spared him the way he did. Sasuke had wanted to kill him.
“Are you jealous, Sasuke-kun?” Orochimaru leaned forward, to collect the boys face in his hands and bring it close to his own. “Because I have my eyes set on another?”
Sasuke said nothing, but Orochimaru saw a small muscle twitch in his set jaw. Inwardly, the Sennin shivered. Orochimaru had never seen anyone look so beautiful when they were displeased. Sometimes, Orochimaru purposely worked Sasuke hard, just so he could see the crimson flare in his eyes.
“You will trust my decisions, as a respectful student, Sasuke.”
“Yes, Sensei.”
“Do you trust me, Sasuke?”
“Yes.”
“Do you respect me, Sasuke?”
“Yes.”
“Do you love me?”
“Of course…” The answer just rolled off Sasuke’s tongue, almost an automatic.
“Then don’t question me.”
“Yes, sensei.”
The day had been a beautiful one. Spring had erupted on Konoha early this year. Wildflowers and cherry blossoms were everywhere. The sun was shining warmly down on the village and the breeze was small and cooling.
No one had expected the attack. It had been very peaceful for the last few months. This was as much as a curse to Konoha as a blessing. With no feuds and crime rates at an all time low, the missions they did receive were C-rank, at best. The village’s economy was suffering.
At first, the village had been apprehensive. Tsunade insisted that it was ‘the calm before the storm’ and that everyone should stay aware. Jounins were sent to the outer limits of Konoha, to keep watch at night, while the Chunins guarded the streets and gates around the clock.
But eventually, reluctantly, everyone’s suspicions began to ease. At the time, it seemed, they had better things to be doing than worrying about mystery Ninja attacks. Like worrying about the financial slump Konoha was in.
And then It happened.
The Hokage had arranged a status conference at the missions office. Every available Konoha Shinobi was called in – which was most of them – to discuss their standing with other countries and possible threats.
They were in the middle of a heated argument between Iruka and Genma on appropriate dress code when the building had exploded.
The world changed abruptly from a peaceful afternoon into a raging pit of fire and debris. Kakashi had already pushed his forehead protector up to reveal a red, swirling eye, which was wildly searching for something…
And that’s when Kakashi had seen Sakura. Naruto had the girl in his arms and was shaking her softly. Sakura was bleeding an awful lot…
“Naruto!”
“Kakashi-Sensei!” Naruto sounded so relieved to see him. It was oddly reassuring in this extreme situation. All around him, rafters and beams were caving down. “Sakura… Sakura-Chan was hit with one of these!” Naruto kicked a rafter.
“Kakashi-kun… we just keep running into each other…” The voice made Kakashi’s blood chill amongst the flames around him and the Jounin slowly turned to look over his shoulder, his heart hammering in his throat.
Kakashi jerked and cried out, twisting up in bed and staring wild eyed around the room. No. No explosion had occurred here. There was no fire. That had happened three days ago. And now he had not only lost one student to Orochimaru but two. He couldn’t let that happen. He would never lose an important person again.
