Disclaimer:
I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
A Journey Begins... Kinda
Disclaimer: Naruto is not mine. Kakashi is still tied to my bed, though...
A/N: okay, i know i already have two other naruto stories unfinished out there, but i'm kinda getting stuck on those, so i'm putting this out to work through some blockage. it's a fairy tale, so sorry, no smut. whoever heard of a fairy tale that had smut in it? perverts...
anywho, it's kinda naruto meets the wizard of oz. also, each character is portrayed as their respective name translations, which i got using Jim Breen's e-dictionary. if you disagree with the translations, take it up with him.
anyone currently reading "Here's to the Fox," have no fear. Chapter 9 *is* in the making. i have about 4 more pages or so on it to go.
okay, that's all. read. now.

A Konoha Fairy Tale: A Journey Begins... Kinda
_______________________________________________
Once upon a time, there was a powerful maelstrom named Naruto. He whirled in the great ocean off the Land of Waves for centuries, protecting merchant ships from pirates and sea monsters. But no matter how vigorously he protected the mortal fishermen, all humans despised him, for humans did not believe that nature was sentient and couldn’t comprehend that something as powerful as the maelstrom could be anything but destructive. After so many centuries of this hate, Naruto began to despair of ever being happy. One day he decided to ask advice of a dolphin that swam by everyday, for dolphins are the smartest creatures in the light of the Sun Goddess.
“Iruka, why do the humans hate me so?” Naruto asked the dolphin.
“They dislike what they don’t understand, Naruto,” returned Iruka.
“So I am fated to be unhappy until the currents disrupt me?”
“You could always ask the Sun Goddess for help.”
And so Naruto decided that he would indeed ask the Sun Goddess for advice. Waiting for a particularly clear day, when his whirling was not so loud and violent, Naruto pleaded to the heavens for the grace of the Sun Goddess.
“Mighty Sun Goddess, Hinata, please hear the pleas of your loyal servant. I am unhappy, and I don’t know what to do. Is there any way to pacify the hate of the humans?”
Suddenly, Naruto was bathed in brilliant sunlight as the Sun Goddess descended from her throne.
“My beautiful Naruto, please don’t be sad. I’m afraid to say that only time can calm the hurtful ways of the humans, but you don’t have to be alone. Seek out your mate, and you will be happy for eternity!”
“But how can I do that when I am but a stationary whirlpool?”
“All things under my light are living, Naruto. If you are not a creature that swims in my bountiful waters or walks in my beauteous forests, then you are a sprite that can come and go as you please.”
“How could I not have known this for so many centuries?”
“You never thought to ask, silly Naruto. Now you can focus all your violent, swirling energy into taking a human shape. Walk my realm, Naruto, and find your mate, who will make you happy for all time.”
With that Hinata the Sun Goddess returned to the sky, but Naruto did not move from his spot. He was confused. So when Iruka the dolphin swam by, he asked his advice again.
“Iruka, the Sun Goddess told me that to be happy, I needed to go out and find my mate.”
“Wonderful, Naruto! I wish you all the luck.”
“But Iruka, how do I find my mate? I can’t simply walk the Goddess’ realm without any real direction. It would take me so long! What am I supposed to do?”
As Naruto’s despair increased, his swirling mass began to froth violently, threatening to suck in Iruka. The dolphin tried his best to calm the maelstrom down, eventually able to talk to him again.
“Well, Naruto, I don’t want to get your hopes up, but I have heard of a philosopher in Konoha that seems to be able to solve anyone’s problem.”
“Konoha? But that’s so far away from here. Really, it’s far away from anywhere. People really travel so far to see this philosopher?”
“Yes, and maybe you should, too. I wish I could go with you, but I am not a sprite,” Iruka lamented.
“That’s okay, Iruka. If this philosopher is as good as you say, maybe I’ll meet some traveling companions on my way. By the way, what is this philosopher’s name?”
“I believe I heard him called Kakashi.”
“Kakashi? That is such an odd name.”
“Indeed, but I think you should set out now. It’s such a lovely day.”
“Yes, today is a day that the Sun Goddess can truly be proud of.”
“Just get to it, Naruto.”
Naruto pouted for a moment, but soon did as he was told. He concentrated all his energy that stretched from his very center to even the small tendrils of foam on the outskirts of his form. Soon, the water that comprised his being began to glow, and the walls of his swirl began to constrict. They fell in on themselves, curling in on themselves, until there was nothing but a small ball of light. It faded, revealing a male human body.
Iruka, seeing that Naruto was going to panic any second, quickly swam over to the new boy and whisked him to the surface. After much coughing and sputtering, the boy was breathing easy.
Iruka took in the new form. It was a form of muscular build, maybe just reaching a human male’s majority, with sun-kissed skin, a sure sign of the Sun Goddess’ favor. Atop his head was golden hair, another sign of Hinata’s favor; Naruto was indeed golden like Herself. Oddly enough, Naruto’s cheeks were marked with strange lines that Iruka could not fathom the meaning of. Perhaps they were symbols of his violent nature.
“Ah, Iruka, I’m naked!”
“Ha, Naruto, I didn’t know that you knew of clothing.”
“I’ve been around humans for centuries; I know what clothes are, thank you.”
“It seems you are less grateful and respectful in sprite form.”
Naruto stuck out his tongue, a nifty use for the appendage in his opinion. Iruka laughed at him and escorted him to the shallows along a beach. Wishing the blonde luck, Iruka swam back out to sea. Naruto stood in the sand, toes curling in the wet grains, the sensation an odd yet pleasing one. But his mind soon returned to the clothing problem, and he sent up a silent plea to the Sun Goddess.
Not really expecting a reply, Naruto was startled when a flower began to sprout from the sand. It was a bell flower, its stem a pretty swirly-twisty shape, and then it began to glow. Naruto had to close his eyes as the intensity increased, but when he opened them, they fell upon the countenance of a servant of the Sun Goddess.
“Good day, Water Sprite. I am Neji, and Hinata-sama has sent me to deliver these.” Neji handed the blonde a bundle of orange fabric. Naruto shook it out to reveal pants, boxers, jacket, and shirt, as well as a pair of sandals. He raised an eyebrow at the color, but Neji just shrugged his shoulders. “She was in a colorful mood.”
Naruto bowed to Neji, and the pale-eyed servant disappeared. Naruto looked again at what was in his hands and shrugged. Clothes were clothes, after all. Dressing on the beach made him feel self-conscious, a feeling he was not too acquainted with, but it faded over time as no one happened upon him.
Eager and ready to set out, Naruto grinned to the sky and shouted a thank you, sure that the Sun Goddess would hear him. He then lowered his hand to glance around, hand straying to the back of his head after a moment’s contemplation.
“Iruka said to go to Konoha, but… which way is it again?”
