A/N: okay, i got this idea, and i have to run with it. so i guess i'll just have to stretch myself to work on *counts om fingers* four stories at once. but i can do it since this semester is almost over. man, i can almost taste that fried turkey!
anyway, i hope you all enjoy.
p.s. this first chapter is kinda short, but that just because it's setting up the plot. don't worry, naruto is going to have plenty of fun in this one, from playing pranks to playing matchmaker. just let me know what you think!

“Why don’t you just tell me why you got in my way like that?”
“Because, dobe, you apparently can’t take care of yourself. Sometimes I wonder what Iruka-sensei was thinking when he made you a ninja.”
“Don’t you dare bring Iruka into this, you asshole! Next time, stay out of my way! That ninja almost got away because of you!”
“Whatever, usuratonkachi.”
“Argh, Sasuke, I just don’t understand you!”
With that, Naruto stormed away from yet another fight with the Uchiha. Naruto was getting fed up, really. It had been awhile since they’d gotten Sasuke back from the snake-bastard, but their relationship just seemed to get worse and worse. A day couldn’t go by when they didn’t nearly beat the other to within an inch of life. But today, Naruto had surprisingly decided to be the bigger man and simply left the confrontation.
Not answering Kakashi and Sakura as he passed as to where he was going, Naruto stomped off in the direction of Yukigakure. They were there for a secret mission by request of the Yukikage, which Sasuke would take care of later, so they had all come under the pretense of escorting some dignitary or another, who was actually a Snow ninja in disguise. They had immediately ‘left’ and were camped out in the woods waiting for dawn, but it wasn’t impossible for them to need supplies from Yuki. Regardless, Naruto loosened his hitai-ate and slipped it in his pocket while activating a slight henge so no one would recognize him.
The Snow shinobi at the gate weren’t fooled, but they knew some from Leaf were there for the Yukikage and let him re-enter the village unchallenged. Naruto wandered aimlessly through the streets surrounded by villagers; he was angry, but he knew he would never take it out on innocent people, so this was the best way to get rid of that anger.
By the time he was calm enough to notice his surroundings, Naruto realized he’d walked into the open market district. Vendors of all kinds were shouting to passing people, trying to sell their wares. Naruto kept walking, stopping every now and then as something caught his eye, and then continuing on. He saw he was coming upon a book merchant, and not one for reading, Naruto picked up his pace.
“You look like an intelligent young man.”
Naruto stopped despite himself. No one had ever accused him of that. Even though he knew he should be flattered, he’d been called stupid too many times in his life to even pretend that it might be true.
“Would you care to buy this rare tome?”
Naruto took a look at what the merchant held in his hands. It was indeed very old looking, the binding cracked with much use, the title just a little faded. But it was very, very, very thick. The kind of thick that made Naruto’s head hurt just trying to guess how many pages it had. So it only went that something that thick would undoubtedly be filled with words that Naruto could never hope to know the meaning of. Without something like a dictionary, he would just simply not understand the book.
Argh, Sasuke, I just don’t understand you!
Suddenly, and rather stupidly, an idea struck Naruto. If he had a dictionary, maybe he could understand the prickly Uchiha. Sasuke was smarter than him, after all, so if he had something that would make him smarter, too, then it should work.
“No, I don’t want to buy that, but do you have a dictionary?”
The merchant paused and stared at Naruto for such a long time that Naruto was afraid he’d died where he stood. Then, as if making his mind up about something, the merchant nodded and disappeared behind a curtain at the back of his stall. When he returned, he handed Naruto a book as thick as the first one, with the same ancient look, though it seemed to be unused. The cover was a deep crimson – the color of Sasuke’s Sharingan eyes, Naruto was reluctant to note – with gold piping that accented the ruby gems that dotted the expanse.
All in all, Naruto thought it was pretty, and he opened it up to examine its contents. The page revealed was full of words that Naruto only vaguely recognized interspersed throughout some he did know and some he didn’t really believe were words. Nodding his head when asked if it was what he was looking for, Naruto paid the merchant and walked away, book tucked under his arm.
Noticing that the sky was beginning to streak its blue coloring with pinks and oranges and purples, Naruto sighed and reluctantly headed back to camp. Kakashi would be slightly less indifferent if he stayed away too long and, worse, Sakura would hurt him if she had to prepare for dinner all by herself. Honestly, that girl had Tsunade’s strength, and yet she couldn't get her own damn firewood. Seriously not looking forward to seeing the Uchiha again, Naruto exited the gates of Yukigakure and disappeared into the trees.

After dinner, at which Sasuke wasn’t present, Naruto sat with his back against a log while the fire blazed merrily before him. Kakashi and Sakura were sitting on the opposite side across from him talking about what kind of down time they’d have once they got back to Konoha. Occasionally, they’d use a word Naruto was unfamiliar with, so instead of stupidly jumping into the conversation, he whipped out his new dictionary. But when he opened it, the page was blank. Confused, he flipped to another page to meet with the same whiteness of nothing. But there were words when he’d first opened it! What the hell was going on?
“Kakashi-sensei, do you know where Sasuke is?”
Naruto was going to look up and reply that they shouldn’t really care where that teme was, but movement on the open page in front of him caused him to pause. He watched in something akin to fear with a slight mix of intrigue while words began to mysteriously appear on the paper.
Kakashi-sensei, do you know where Sasuke is? – (Question asked in seeming curiosity): Kakashi-sensei, you’re keeping him under watch, correct?
“I’m sure wherever he is, he’s in sight of us.”
I’m sure wherever he is, he’s in sight of us. – (Statement made in seeming indifference): He’s very close and watching.
“Well, he should know he could join us.”
Well, he should know he could join us. – (Statement made in the sake of friendship): Do you think he’ll ever come around to truly being one of us again?
“In time.”
Nothing appeared on the page at that. Naruto – though he had no idea what was really going on here except he seemed to have some sort of magic book that didn’t define words, but rather sentences – supposed it was because Kakashi’s answer answered both questions. Still staring at the mysterious page before him, Naruto barely noted when another presence joined them at the fire.
“I’m going to begin my mission now. I will be waiting for you here in one week, Kakashi. And Sakura, tell the Hokage that I appreciate that she has so much faith in me after all that’s happened.”
Sasuke then disappeared, but not before Naruto gave him a slightly disbelieving look. What just came out of the Uchiha’s mouth was not something Naruto expected. Sasuke showing any type of gratitude was strange. The asshole hadn’t even thanked him when he’d saved him from the snake-bastard, and now he was thanking Tsunade for letting him do a mission on his own?
Naruto’s eyes dropped back to dictionary, and he almost gasped in shock.
And Sakura, tell the Hokage that I appreciate that she has so much faith in me after all that’s happened. – (Statement of apparent gratitude): And Sakura, tell the Hokage that her spies have not gone unnoticed, and it’s getting old fast.
People were spying on Sasuke? Why? Then it hit him; even though Sasuke had been back for a while and was allowed to continue his shinobi advancement with the original cell seven, he still defected, and the council was less than ready to forgive him. So of course they’d have to keep an eye out. And, from Sakura’s ‘real’ question to Kakashi, the perverted jounin was one of those spies.
So this little baby can decipher people’s true meaning? So no one can ever lie to him or hide things from him again? Naruto thought on this. Even though he’d proven to be a very powerful shinobi, his harboring of Kyuubi still had people guarded around him, and sometimes, for fear of Naruto’s reaction, Tsunade would keep things from him. But no longer, as long as he had the book with him. Everyone’s deepest secrets could be ferreted out.
Apparently even the stoic Uchiha’s. Naruto gave a dark little chuckle under his breath.
Watch out Uchiha Sasuke; Uzumaki Naruto’s got your number.
