Find Me

~Prologue~

During the darkest hour of the night, just after midnight, in a thick forest, a swiftly moving shadow is racing to its destination. There is a group of larger shadows chasing after the first one.

“Get away from me, you sick bastards!” yells a small, orange-clad boy, jumping from branch to branch and tree to tree as he runs from his pursuers.
The four people chasing him don’t bother to say anything. They can tell that he’s getting
tired because he isn’t moving as fast as he had been. The only thing they did was speed up and surround the little orange blur.

/Shit! They’re gonna catch me! And so close to home, too!/ this was true, since a gate was becoming visible through the trees with a sign at the top, proudly displaying the name: “Konoha.”

Just before he was within hearing distance of the walls that supported the gate and surrounded the village beyond, his pursuers managed to somehow latch a collar to the slender neck of the blonde-haired, blue-eyed boy.

Instantly, he could feel his chakra being blocked off and he fell out of the tree he had been perched in, preparing to take off to the next one, since he could no longer stick to it with chakra.

Before he hit the ground, one of the ninja (they had to be ninja, they could stick to trees just like him) that pursued him caught him.

“Alright, brat. No struggling or we’ll have to knock you out,” one of the men murmured as he put cuffs on the boy’s tiny wrists. “You’re coming back to Twilight Country with us whether you like it or not.”

His three comrades were holding the small boy so he could place the cuffs on his wrists without a hitch. “You won’t be able to get these, or the collar, off. So don’t even try. They have chakra-binding seals on them, so don’t even think about trying to escape, you’ll just get hurt.”

“My name’s not ‘brat’ you bastard! It’s Naruto. Uzumaki Naruto!” yelled Naruto, his voice and face full of rage. He tried to wriggle and squirm out of his captors’ grasp, but, with no access to his or Kyuubi’s chakra, it was useless. /The old hag’s not gonna know I’m missing until at least a week from today/

Naruto cursed the fact that he had decided to come back early from his month-long vacation. /I guess I really am an idiot. I bet nobody’s gonna care I’m gone. Except maybe Iruka-sensei and Granny Tsunade/ he stopped struggling, because he was just too tired.
He’d been running for at least three days straight, without stopping, before the other ninja caught up to him. He was also weak from hunger, again from running without stopping.
Naruto’s eyes had begun to get heavy because of fatigue; he was finding it hard to keep them open, and to keep the darkness at the edge of his vision from blinding him. /No! If only for Iruka-sensei and Granny Tsunade, I have to at least try to get away! If they think I didn’t even try they’ll be . . . disappointed . . . in me/

His eyes had been almost completely closed, except for a tiny sliver through which a bit of bright blue could be seen. Suddenly, they snapped open, filled with determination, and he began to struggle again. At least, he struggled as much as his tired and chakra-less muscles would allow.

“I thought I told you not to struggle, damn brat!” the man who cuffed Naruto’s wrists growled, raising his fist to punch the small boy so he could knock him out. Fortunately, or not, one of the other ninja stopped his fist before it could come into contact with the blonde head.

“Lord Kuwakin said he wanted the child untouched, remember? That also means unharmed,” this ninja, surprisingly, had a soft, female voice. She let go of the man’s arm and pinched a spot on Naruto’s neck. He had turned to look at the ninja who had ‘saved’ him.

The last thing Naruto saw before darkness claimed him was a pair of kind silver eyes, which were filled with sorrow and pity. The only female captor caught the slight weight of the child they had been ordered to capture.

In her office, hidden behind stacks of paper, is the Hokage of Konoha. Sleeping. She is jolted awake when the door opens, revealing a pretty, young woman with short-cropped, dark brown hair framing her face.

The hokage made herself look, for all intents and purposes, as if she had been working instead of sleeping. It worked, to a certain extent, if one only ignored the piece of paper stuck to the side of her face and the dried drool on her chin.

“Tsunade-sama,” the young medic-nin bowed slightly. “There is a genin team here wanting to speak with you,” she went on after standing straight. She looked with amusement at her mentor’s face and had to smother a giggle at the dried drool.

“Who is it, Shizune?” Tsunade asked as she opened a drawer in her desk, producing a bottle of sake. Shizune walked closer to the Hokage, pulled off the piece of paper stuck to her face and wiped off the dried drool with a wet cloth she’d brought with her (she came prepared).

/Tsunade-hime should stop drinking on the job/ Shizune’s thoughts and facial expression were filled with affectionate disapproval. She saw the Hokage as more of an older sister than a mentor and teacher.

“It’s Kakashi-san and two of his genin students, Sasuke and Sakura,” Shizune left out the fourth member of Team Seven because he happened to be on vacation. /Isn’t he supposed to have been back sometime today?/

Tsunade grumbled a bit. /Can’t I have any time to myself?/ but one look outside her window, and another look at a certain picture answered that question and more. The look outside showed her that no, she wouldn’t have time to herself anymore. And the picture showed her it was worth it.

Of course, she would never tell Naruto that a group picture that included herself, Jiraiya, Shizune, Ton-Ton, and a certain innocent, blonde-haired, blue-eyed, orange-clad boy, a.k.a. Naruto, convinced her, every day from Day One, to stay in Konoha as Hokage instead of grabbing her things and gambling around the world again.

“Fine, let them in,” she sighed, settling in for an . . . interesting . . . conversation. /Heh, talking with Kakashi and his team is always ‘interesting’/ the Godaime Hokage smirked as the silver-haired jounin entered, in all his one-eyed glory, followed by pink-haired Sakura and raven-haired Sasuke.

“Greetings, Tsunade-hime,” Kakashi bowed playfully, dodging the paperweight the big-breasted woman threw at his head. Sasuke and Sakura shared a glance, she rolled her eyes and he snorted in annoyance. “I was wondering if you could-“

“If you want a mission, Kakashi, you’re gonna have to wait ‘till Naruto gets back, you already know that,” she interrupted. Suddenly, she felt a chill make its way down her spine when she thought about the little blonde she had gotten very attached to.

“That’s not why we’re here, Tsunade-sama,” Kakashi’s eye crinkled into a smile directed at the Hokage. But the smile did not last long, soon replaced by a serious expression not usually, if ever, seen on his face. “It’s getting pretty late, and we want to know why Naruto isn’t back yet.”
