I fall to pieces
Each time I see you again
I fall to pieces
How can I be just your friend?

Naruto caught himself staring once again at Sasuke. The raven-haired class president was busy stacking textbooks on a cart to be returned to the Literature Department. He spared no one a glance, and Naruto painfully recalled a time that Sasuke’s eyes would always seek out his.

They’d been dating since first year, secretly at first, and then gradually in public, though they’d never told their friends. But suddenly, once they’d entered third year, Sasuke had broken up with him. Naruto had cried himself to sleep for many nights, though he’d vehemently deny it if ever asked.

As Sasuke rolled the cart out of the room, Naruto turned inward, recalling the night they’d parted as ex-lovers.

He’d begged and pleaded with Sasuke not to leave him, only to be called a pathetic loser that needed to get a life. As a last ditch effort to keep the prickly bastard in his life he’d asked, “Can we at least still be friends?”

And his cold, emotionless answer had been, “Whatever, dobe.”

You want me to act like we’ve never kissed
You want me to forget, pretend we’ve never met
And I’ve tried, and I’ve tried, but I haven’t yet
You walk by, and I fall to pieces

“I wonder what it would be like to kiss Sasuke-kun.”

The lunch period was only half over, and Naruto had been subjected to this conversation the entire time. His friends Sakura and Ino sat beside his desk, idly eating their bento lunches while whispering inane wonderings about the class president.

“I bet it would be the most wonderful feeling in the world.”

Naruto looked between the two girls before seriously asking, “Want my opinion?” And the girls looked at him before bursting out in laughter.

“Please, Naruto. No offense, but you talking about Sasuke-kun would be like Kiba talking about cats. You know nothing about him. I doubt he even knows your name.”

Naruto wanted to shout that Sasuke did know his name; he knew his favorite food, favorite color, favorite book, movie, jacket, shoe type; most importantly, Sasuke knew Naruto’s body, probably more than the Uchiha knew his own.

But Sasuke had told him to forget they’d ever been a couple, and since Naruto loved him more than anything in the world, he’d tried to comply. There’d been times when Naruto had been close to being over Sasuke, and then something would remind the blonde of the bond they’d shared for two years, a bond even deeper than the friendship that had been there since childhood.

Naruto shoved those thoughts aside, starting anew to try and forget Sasuke. He opened his mouth to change the subject, when something blocked the light coming in from the window a row over.

Sasuke was standing by the window, looking out, supposedly at the sky or even the school ground, and Naruto couldn’t speak. Every time he tried to stop thinking about the bastard, that damn Sasuke would appear out of nowhere and trip his mind up. It was making his lover’s last demand impossible to carry out.

I fall to pieces
Each time someone speaks your name
I fall to pieces
Time only adds to the flame

“Sasuke is such a great student!”

“Sasuke-kun is so gorgeous!”

“Sasuke made the winning basket at the last game.”

“Uchiha actually had the nerve to not speak to me!”

“I’d give anything to have Sasuke-kun notice me.”

“Sasuke…”

“Sasuke…”

“Sasuke…”

Naruto grabbed his hair and forced himself not to scream. Everywhere he went someone was talking about his ex-lover. No matter that their senior year was almost over, Naruto had yet to get over the raven-haired bastard. He’d even taken to almost dropping out of school, but Tsunade had given him an earful for even bringing the subject up. But his grades guaranteed that he’d never make it into college anyway, so Naruto at least started skipping school. He’d come every now and again to prove that he was alive, but he’d always hear nothing but Sasuke’s name.

Even out in public, as he aimlessly wandered the streets, Sasuke was a main focus as the only Uchiha left. And he was about to graduate and probably go to a very prestigious university. The city could hardly not talk about him.

And it was driving Naruto mad.

You tell me to find someone else to love
Someone who’ll love me too
The way you used to do
But each time I go out with someone new
You walk by, and I fall to pieces

Besides not thinking about Sasuke, Naruto had tried dating other people. They’d go to a restaurant or a movie, the arcade, or maybe just a romantic walk through the park. And who should always show up to put a damper on his ‘healing’? Uchiha fucking Sasuke, that’s who. It happened every time.

There’d been that time with Hinata…

And Neji…

And Gaara…

And Shikamaru…

And Shino…

And Temari…

Yeah, Naruto had tried to drown out his undying love with other partners, but it never worked out. Sometimes it was because of their incompatibility, but others it was because the shadow of Sasuke was always too close, and either Naruto would break things off or his partner would sense unease and do it for him.

Ever since Sasuke left him, Naruto had been unlucky in love, for two reasons: that no one stayed with him very long, and he was still hopelessly in love with the Uchiha. That was the unluckiest thing Naruto could ever imagine.

You walk by, and I fall to pieces

‘Dammit, I’ve had enough! That fucking bastard is mine!’

Naruto found Sasuke in the classroom long after school had let out. He stood in the door for a moment, just watching Sasuke write at a desk near the window, the setting sun outlining his love in fire. It almost seemed to tell Naruto not to bother, that Sasuke was untouchable.

‘I’ve already touched him. Now, it’s a matter of taming him.’

“What are you doing, teme?”

“Why are you still here, dobe?”

“Answer the damn question, Sasuke, geez.”

“… I’m finishing the second part of my application to S University.”

“Wow, that’s a pretty rigorous school.”

“Something you’d know nothing about.”

“Shut it!”

They shared a laugh for a moment. Naruto stared into Sasuke’s eyes until the pale boy returned his attention to the paperwork in front of him. Naruto’s hand itched to reach out and stroke Sasuke’s hair, the hair that was much softer than it would seem from looking at the eccentric way it stuck out in the back.

“Why did you break up with me?”

Sasuke didn’t answer at first, but he stopped writing, staring at the paper. “Because I don’t love you, anymore.”

“Bullshit.”

“It’s true.”

“Bull. Shit.”

“It’s…” Sasuke trailed off, and Naruto wondered what Sasuke was going say instead. His pride wouldn’t let him continue to lie like that. “It would have been difficult to continue our relationship.”

“Why?”

“There would have been too many complications. Too many people-”

“What people, Sasuke? You and me, we’re alone. What we do is our business, no one else’s.”

“You don’t understand, Naruto!”

“You’re damn right I don’t! So tell me, Sasuke! Tell me so I can understand.”

“I was afraid!”

Naruto stood back as Sasuke suddenly raised from his seat, fists clenched on the desktop, bangs dangling down in his eyes.

“Afraid of what, Sasuke?”

“That you’d leave me. I’m going to college. My time is going to be monopolized by studying and essays, projects and internships. I don’t know how our relationship could stand up to that.”

“Our relationship lasted two years of you being a bastard, Sasuke.” He watched Sasuke flinch at the comment, and Naruto sighed. Then he chuckled. “Who knew the day would come that you were the one being the usuratonkachi?”

“What?” Sasuke looked up at him, and Naruto saw his watery black eyes clearly for the first time in so long.

“You’ve always been a busy bastard, and so have I. Don’t you recall last year, on our anniversary, that I had to run from work at 11:30 that night, just to make sure we shared even a kiss on our actual anniversary day? And how much time did we have by the time I got there?”

“One minute and twenty-two seconds.”

“Sasuke, I don’t know what ever gave you the idea that I’d leave you. How many times have I threatened to leave your sorry ass and never did? Dammit Sasuke, so we’ll both be busy. We’ll just have to live with it, because I can’t go on without you. Believe me, I’ve tried.”

“I know. I’ve been there. Every time it looked as if you were actually going to finally let me go, something inside me couldn’t let you.”

“I knew it!” Naruto pointed an accusatory finger at Sasuke. “I knew you always showed up just to screw with me!” Naruto put down his hand and sighed again. “Well, let’s just forget we were ever apart, ne? So, wanna get back together?”

“Why didn’t you ever give up on me, Naruto?”

“Because you’d walk by, and I’d fall to pieces.”

Naruto smiled and leaned forward to kiss Sasuke. Their lips met, and the pieces of Naruto were put beautifully back together.
