Better to Reign in Hell than Serve in Heaven

Better to Reign in Hell than Serve in Heaven

Prologue

A pair of blue eyes watched as the familiar form of his adoptive father left the building huddled in a worn out orange coat against the cold morning. His eyes narrowed knowing all to well where Iruka was off to. He had been hiding the fact that he had known for days. Today was the yearly test to become a Genin. Not only that, but Naruto knew that as long as Iruka was the one presiding over the exam, he would be at a disadvantage.

Iruka had the mistaken impression that Naruto would be unable to survive being a Genin. It was true that once accepted into the training hall as a Genin you either advanced to become a Chuunin or you were left for dead. Once the training started, there would be no way out. It was how control was given to all that participated in the training hall. Those that could not make it were culled from the ranks so that only the strongest survived. It was how Konoha was able to keep a strict level of excellence.

Of course you did not have to go to the training hall at all. In fact for years Iruka had been trying to find a way for Naruto to abandon his idea to take after his adoptive father’s footsteps. It was all to no avail. Ever since he had turn 8, he had gone to the exams. It was true he was not the smartest of ninja but he had willpower as well as a high level of chakra. It took time for him to learn new techniques but once he did, he was able to complete them at a higher scale then most.

And yet, Iruka only turned his back to him when he pleaded with him to enter the training hall. Each year like clockwork he would enter the exam room, and then his father would force him to attempt his weakest jutsu. No matter to Iruka that once he failed he would train endlessly until he could master the failed jutsu. It did not even matter that each year his exam became more and more difficult.

Naruto had far excelled the E and D rank jutsu and was currently secretly delving into the C-rank jutsu which was supposed to only be used by the Chuunin. Naruto wanted to become a ninja that his adoptive father could be proud of. His ambition was to become the Hokage some day and rule over Konoha. Why was Iruka so against it? Did he expect Naruto to be happy sitting to the side as a second class citizen when he could become one of the elites?

Ninja were the only people who held power in Konoha. It bred a warlike culture, but with it, it brought security and a natural order that had allowed Konoha to survive for centuries. To make a place in the world, there was only one path. You had to become a ninja.

“Enter.”

Naruto took a deep breath as he heard his father’s voice come from the other side of the door. He knew as he opened the door not to look at Iruka. He would only see the pain in his father’s face. He knew Iruka loved him as only a real parent could, and that was why Naruto knew that forcing this conflict between them pained Iruka to no end.

“Uzumaki, Naruto. Age 12. Future Hokage of Konoha!”

There was silence. After waiting became too much for Naruto he looked up and blinked as he saw not only his father but the three Legendary Sannins. It would have been odd had only one of them been in the room but all three was almost impossible unless forced. Ever since the group had broken up there had been hard feeling between the three of them. Why were they suddenly here at the Genin exams?

“Give him the test Iruka. I am tired of waiting.”

Naruto’s eyes widened as he looked towards the speaker. The long straight black hair and piercing eyes on his bleached white skin gave the impression of a corpse. Orochimaru had a way of speaking that seemed to make his very blood turn cold. But no matter, he would pass the test this time. He had to in order to prove to his father that he could take care of himself.

“Shadow Clones… five of them.”

Naruto’s world seemed to drop under him at the pronouncement. He had hoped that with the Sannins in the room that Iruka would have taken pity on him so that he would not have to make a fool of himself in front of the others. It was true he had recently read about the jutsu. He knew it was also S-rank and requires a lot of concentration and chakra. He had tried it once to his own foolishness and had completely drained himself of chakra as well as only making a single slight copy that had no physical merit and it was more like an image then a clone as Naruto had been able to put his had though it.

“Iruka, that is hardly a Chuunin level task much less a Genin...”

His eyes locked on the only female in the room. She was a descendent from the very first Hokage that had established Konoha. There were rumors that once the current Hokage died or retired from office, she would be the one to take his place. Women often were unable to become Hokage due to level of skill and strength needed to do the job, but she was not a Sannin for nothing.

“Quiet Tsunade. Iruka is in charge of the test, if he deems it necessary to give the child the task then it is his to give.”

Naruto’s hope flickered away as Orochimaru easily shot down Tsunade’s comment. There would be no way to appeal to them that the test was unfair. Now he would be forced to do the jutsu he was completely unprepared for.

“I can’t believe my ears. Orochimaru following the rules. If that kid can do this task, I’ll take him as my apprentice.”

“Do you promise?”

Four pairs of eyes looked down at him even as his words left his mouth. Naruto wanted to take them back but somehow hearing the final Sannin words, he knew that was what he wanted. He was far too advanced for the training hall as a beginning Genin. Iruka knew that and still kept him away. If he could get the patronage of Jiraiya though, Iruka should have no complaints.

“Ku ku ku ku ku…”

“It’s not funny Orochimaru. Boy, I’ll keep my word. If you can do this jutsu, I’ll take you on as my apprentice.”

Yeah, now there was no way that Iruka could stop him. He flashed a smile to his father only to have it falter at the frown he was returning. Naruto knew that look; He would be getting quite a lecture once they were back at the apartment. But right now the most important thing was before him. He also realized there was no way he could perform a shadow clone at the moment.

“One week and I’ll be able to do it no sweat.”

“You have to do it now or else you can not pass this exam.”

Naruto felt his world crumble about him. How could Iruka be so cruel to him? Did he not see that all he wanted was his father’s acceptance. He turned to Jiraiya with pleading eyes. If he could not gain acceptance form the only person he loved then maybe he could get it from someone else. All he wanted was a chance.

“You have one week. Be back in this room in exactly seven days from now at 2:00 PM with your bags packed to go. Do not waste my time boy.”

“I won’t. Be prepared to train me old man!”
