Prologue

Prologue
He had been walking in circles, he was sure of it. Somehow, one of Orochimaru’s men had cast a genjutsu on him, and like the clueless idiot everyone believed him to be, he fell for it. He thought he had gotten better in the last three years. He thought he had gotten stronger, smarter even. But no, he was still susceptible to traps such as these.

He shook his blond head angrily. No, he was smarter than before. The only reason he had been caught was because he was exhausted. A stupid mistake, yes, but he was better than before. Relenting, he set his cargo on the ground carefully and brought his hands up, forming the correct hand sign and murmuring, “Release!”

The genjutsu was gone.

Yes, he was tired. He was in pain. Fighting against Orochimaru could do that to you. But he was also emotionally tired. His best friend (rival), the very one he trained so hard for so he could save and prove himself worthy to, was dead. It wasn’t a genjutsu or any kind of trick. It was the truth. He was carrying the body back as proof.

He felt like his reason for living was gone. To say Naruto loved him wasn’t a lie. The raven-haired teen was his first (best) friend and he would do anything to save him. But he failed. Not only did he fail Sasuke, but he failed Konoha. He failed Sakura. He couldn’t even save his best friend. He hated himself for that.

The blond closed his eyes, shutting off his emotions as best he could for the moment. He needed to find out where the genjutsu user was so he could take him out. Naruto turned, feeling a surge of chakra, just in time to block a kunai flying right at him. He caught the weapon, ignoring the slight pain the blade caused as it sliced his hand, and flung the weapon back with a deadly accurate speed. It hit its mark.

After doing a quick scouting around the area, satisfied, Naruto returned to his friend’s body. Why he was the one carrying the body back, he wasn’t sure. He just acted on his own when he spoke out to his comrades, saying that he should be the one to do it. They accepted and let him go on ahead. His team would follow behind.

He couldn’t stand seeing Sasuke this way. He was so pale, so lifeless. Naruto’s heart ached for his friend, the one he failed. The one he loved. He let the only person he felt he could love down; the only person that he felt truly cared for him (in his own weird way).

Not only that, but Orochimaru was still alive. Sure, the snake was unsuccessful in gaining Sasuke as a new body, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t a threat. Naruto Uzumaki wasn’t the only one that had been growing in power over the past few years. Orochimaru was now stronger than ever, albeit not having a fresh, new body to switch to. He would eventually find someone else and everything would be fine for him.

Naruto growled in anger, balling his fists. He wanted to scream, wanted to kill that bastard, wanted to do something—anything—that would change what happened. But he had a mission to do. In an almost chilling calm, Naruto leaned down and hoisted the body onto his back.

He needed to return Sasuke to Konoha. He would mourn then, but right now he needed to do this last favor for his closest friend.

The blond darted through the trees using a speed no one would have thought possible. He made the three-day journey in one, making it to the village by sunrise. He didn’t even bother with the guards at the gate; he just went straight to the Hokage’s office. In five minutes flat he was on the other side of the village, entering the office through the window like his old teacher used to do.

Tsunade turned her gaze to the blond as he landed in the room, first angry then shock and finally sorrow. Before she could even ask, Naruto began his report, though he was not captain of the squad, and left. The whole time his face was calm, like a statue’s.

He didn’t even go home. He didn’t want to go home. He just let his feet carry him wherever, not paying attention to his surroundings. He wasn’t hungry, he wasn’t tired. He was sad, but he felt numb.

Naruto found himself sitting on a tree branch hours later. The sun was now high in the sky, and he was sure that the rest of his team would be arriving soon. But he didn’t want to see them. He knew they would seek him out but he wanted to be alone. They would look at all his favorite places: Ichiraku, the training grounds, Hokage Mountain. But Naruto was in a place no one would find him.

Dark clouds flitted across the sky. The scent of rain reached his nose. The setting was finally starting to fit his mood. Tears slipped down scarred cheeks. Naruto curled into a tight ball, his back to the tree, arms wrapped around his legs. He buried his head in his arms, hiding his tears even though there was no one to see him cry.

“Dobe,” the whispered voice called. Sasuke’s voice. But Sasuke was dead. Naruto was only hearing things. Crying did that. It would make one’s head hurt and give them a stuffy nose, and even make the person delirious; which is what it did to Naruto. He wanted Sasuke to come back to him so bad that he was hearing his voice.

“Dobe,” Sasuke’s voice said again and Naruto sniffled. Why was he hearing that voice? Was Sasuke so pissed at Naruto for letting him down that even after his death he would haunt the blond?

“Naruto, look at me!” Sasuke’s angry voice demanded. The blond lifted his head just a little, seeing a blurry figure in front of him. His tears came harder. Why was it that he could get no peace? He couldn’t even be alone in his misery without being disturbed.

“Leave me alone,” Naruto cried in a small, choked voice and buried his head again. Now he was seeing things. He was going insane!

Suddenly he felt a cool touch on his head, lifting his face up gently. Lips brushed against his and Naruto widened his eyes, pushing away from the figure in front of him.

“S…Sasuke?!” Naruto gasped disbelievingly. Okay, now he was confused. Delusions were only that, right? Hallucinations were things people ‘see’ or ‘hear,’ but they weren’t real. So how is it that Naruto felt Sasuke’s touch?

The dark-haired figure in front of him smiled softly and rested a paler-than-normal hand on Naruto’s cheek, wiping away the tears. “I’m not dead yet.”

So should I continue? Or does this suck? Constructive critism is welcome.
