Wide of the Mark

Here's the NejiSasu story I was promising - I didn't post it that day because I couldn't for the life of me think of a title! Hope you enjoy it!

Chapter One

Hyuuga Hiashi surveyed the line of girls in front of him with a careful and discerning eye. His own gaze gave away nothing of his thoughts as it swept down the figure of each young woman, ignoring the nervous smiles and giggles; such behavior immediately exempting those producing the sounds from his final selection.

He walked slowly down the line for a closer inspection, pausing next to a beautiful, petite blonde. He glanced down at her heart-shaped face, waiting for her to tilt her head up and meet his eyes. When no such action came, he moved on, slightly disappointed, while the girl continued to stare at her feet, probably frightened out of her wits by his sheer presence.

‘So…not that one…’ He glanced back at her, appraising. ‘Shame….’ He mused, continuing on his inspection

All the girls gathered so far had been disappointing, only a few remained for him to pass in front of.

‘No… No… Definitely not… No…wait….’

He paused again, this time in front of a dark haired young woman, her creamy, pale skin, flawless over her fine bones, her hands entwined modestly in front of her. His eyes flicked up to her face, mildly surprised and pleased that she was looking back at him, her expression a mix of wariness and challenge.

He stepped forward, pressing into her personal space, delighted when she didn’t give an inch but stared back at him defiantly, one of her delicate hands clenching into a loose fist inside the other. He suppressed the small quirk of a smile that wanted to make its way across his face and stepped back, bending to speak quietly to one of the many serving women in attendance, before leaving.

‘She will do well…very well…’ He thought to himself, secretly pleased at the finding the perfect match for his nephew.

///////// Earlier that day////////

Sasuke scowled at his cereal box, as though, by sheer pissyness, he could suddenly make it full again. He pushed the last of said cereal around in his bowl before resolving himself to the day’s current dilemma.

He would have to leave the Uchiha district and go shopping.

He frowned again, angrily shoving his spoon in his mouth. With no one around to watch, Sasuke could be as petulant as he liked with no annoying people to pull him up for it. Especially not that half-wit dobe, who insisted every day, in his ultimately retarded way, that he was going to reach the pinnacle of being a ninja. Sasuke snorted.

Yeah right.

He shoved away from the table and stood, clearing his dish and stomping up to his room. Ordinarily he wouldn’t have minded going shopping, the vast Uchiha fortune was still intact and his to spend how he liked. If he wanted something, anything, he had the money to buy it. But, of late, shopping and well anything that took him out of the house had become something to be endured and not enjoyed.

His fan club followed him everywhere and he meant EVERYWHERE. He guessed the last straw would have been after three of them followed him into a public toilet, for God knows what reason, only leaving after he threatened them with bodily harm, sharingan spinning wildly.

So now every time he left, bar training where he could be in relative peace except for the dobe, he had to disguise himself. At first he’d just tried to henge himself into a different person, but for some reason the fan girls could still tell it was him. It might have been the fact that he just couldn’t bear to part with his trademark hair, and kept it through the transformation. The dobe had seen him once, on one of these outings and had, fortunately, walked right past him without a shred of recognition on his face.

Heh. Usuratonkachi…

So he knew it worked on some people, but not the ones that really counted. What he needed was a more complete disguise, something that he could hold for hours and hours with almost no effort. It would have to be an actual jutsu as opposed to a transformation which he had to picture in his head constantly, lest it accidentally dispel without warning.

But…who did he know that had a good, completely unrecognizable form that Sasuke could borrow?

A slow smirk spread across his face. He knew which jutsu he was going to pick, sure he’d seen it lots of times, the sharingan easily picking up the chakara flow needed to perform it.

He settled his nerves, unsure about trying a completely new jutsu with no one to help if something went wrong. But he was a tensai, a genius ninja…something as simple as this couldn’t possibly go wrong!

He placed his hands in the correct seal, steadied his chakara and muttered the words needed, feeling quite ridiculous and glad that no one was watching.

A puff of smoke later and Sasuke looked down at himself in satisfaction, walking to the bathroom to look at himself in the mirror.

He smiled widely, an expression that no one would have thought him capable of.

“Excellent. No one will recognize me like this.” He nodded to himself, smiling again when the willowy girl in the refection smiled back at him, her dark hair falling around her face in serrated spikes.

**********

I know it's pretty short, and just to let you know this story is still very much being written so updates won't be rocketing out every day or so! But please review, it'll be nice to know if it's a story that people will find interesting.
