Despite the chakra suppressing blindfold secured around his eyes, Sasuke held his head high in an arrogant posture. His Uchiha pride would allow no less. His hands may have been tied behind his back, but he knew he could escape from his bonds if necessary. He was acutely aware of the presence of the Godaime Hokage close to his side, and the other sannin, Jiraiya, directly behind him. There were several ANBU surrounding him as well, but the raven-haired man could detect a larger source of threat towards the front of the room.
He could tell there were twelve of them, due to their different chakra signatures. Their hatred – and their greed – was tangible in the air. Sasuke was careful not to let any flicker of emotion show on his face as he was brought to a stop in front of them and shoved down into a hard, uncomfortable chair.
A tense silence permeated the air. Sasuke pursed his lips, refusing to be the first to speak. He would not beg for forgiveness. Nor would he refute any of their accusations. He would hear out their allegations and accept their punishment. He knew that if he waited long enough, he would have his chance to escape this disgustingly peaceful village. His patience was endless, cultivated through years of training as a genin with Konoha’s number one annoying idiot, years of instruction under the slimy snake, and years of chasing his bastard of a brother. He would wait. His chance would come.
Itachi.
The name left a sour taste in Sasuke’s mouth. He had failed. Again.
“Honourable councilmen,” the Hokage began. Sasuke left his thoughts and turned his attention to the woman. He found her voice incredibly annoying. “I present Uchiha Sasuke for trial with regards to the many crimes he has committed against Konoha.”
“We know why he’s here, Tsunade,” a scathing voice replied. “You’re dismissed, all of you. The trial will be held in confidence between the council and Uchiha Sasuke.”
The sharingan-wielder felt the surprise radiating off of his entourage, and he had to admit that he was surprised as well, although he didn’t let it show. Sasuke felt Tsunade’s temper rising, but it was the other sannin that spoke first.
“We’ll be waiting outside then, right Tsunade?” he asked, turning and moving towards the door. Shortly afterwards, Sasuke felt the ANBU whisk away, and the Hokage left as well. Sasuke was left alone with the council, and for a moment he contemplated attempting an escape. However, he knew it would be unwise under such close supervision. His patience would have to hold out a bit longer.
“Well now, boy,” one of the elderly female members spoke up. “What have you got to say for yourself?”
Sasuke remained stoic, unwilling to give anything away. “I believe you all know why I left,” he commented, unimpressed with this line of questioning.
“Which is why we don’t know what to do with you,” the woman replied. “Itachi is still alive. You were unable to meet your goals, so it’s likely you’ll be running off again as soon as you get the chance.”
“You should be executed,” another member cut in. “You are unpredictable and dangerous, and you cannot be trusted. However, the sharingan is one of Konoha’s most prized weapons. We would rather not kill you if we don’t have to.”
Sasuke repressed a sound of disbelief. Did these old bats think they could kill him so easily?
“There is also the threat of Uchiha Itachi to be considered,” a male voice commented. “He could be spreading the sharingan bloodline into other countries as we speak. He must be disposed of before the situation gets out of hand. You, Uchiha Sasuke, are the best candidate for the mission. Why have you not succeeded thus far?”
Sasuke frowned. He knew that this question would arise, but he had still not prepared a justifiable answer. “My brother’s strength surpasses my own,” he finally admitted. He was not strong enough, that much was certain. But was his weakness in his eyes, in his physical strength, or in his mind?
The council was silent for a few moments, and then they murmured amongst themselves. Sasuke tried not to listen and tried to convince himself that he didn’t care what their verdict would be.
“Very well, Uchiha Sasuke, we will give you one last chance to defeat Itachi. However, we insist that you achieve the Mangekyou Sharingan before making this attempt.”
Sasuke felt his blood run cold.
“We know of your bond with Uzumaki Naruto. He will be your guardian for the next six months. During this time period you are to gain his trust and reform your bond with him.”
He tensed, his mind instantly protesting against the implications of the council’s words.
“This is your mission, Uchiha Sasuke. It will be completed in utmost secrecy. You are to tell no one of the objectives or the method of completion. Do you understand the requirements, and will you accept?”
Sasuke was silent for several moments. He knew there was only one answer that would satisfy the council.
“Yes,” he finally spoke, his voice strong but cold. “I will kill Uzumaki Naruto to obtain the Mangekyou, and then I will dispose of my brother to protect the sharingan and Konoha. Mission accepted.”
