Chapter One

It was hard... so hard to cling on. Every fiber of his body screamed for comfort of any kind. The only organs on his body left untortured were his eyes; his dark, bewildered eyes; and at the moment, even they were losing their usefulness.

It was dusk. The sun, high when he had begun his battle, had travelled a slow path to the horizon before speeding below the midline of the Earth, gradually plunging the forest in which he lay into the depths of darkness.

Rock Lee was no stranger to pain. During his first Chunin exams, he had his arms and legs crushed to pieces. He had pushed his chakra past its breaking point. He had very nearly died. As blood trickled into his still-open eyes, Lee remembered his opponent that day.

Gaara, of the Desert. A formidable fighter, yes. But alas, still Lee's first love. Not long after his recovery, Gaara had come to his rescue, saving him from who he only remembered as a demon... a demon who used his bones as swords. As Lee's life was beginning to escape him, so did the name of that extraordinary ninja.

Gaara had refused Lee's love, unable to bear the pain that it pressed upon his own heart. Love was not kind, even when returned. The refusal, however, was not what stuck out in the young man's mind. His first kiss was what captured his semi-concious mind.

Shortly after his rescue, Lee had sprung such a memorable kiss on an exhausted Gaara. Lee's lips burnt as they met the Sand ninja's. A bound hand found their way into the soft scarlett hair of the strong fighter, weakened by battle.

What surprised him was not the softness of the ninja's red hair, nor his surprisingly supple mouth; but when Gaara's body bent into the kiss, as if yielding to a strong wind. His tired body leaned into Lee's, and he breathed harshly through his nose. Their tongues collided, washing over one another in an attempt to reach the deepest recesses of the other's mouth. Lee's arm had snaked carefully around Gaara, pressing his warmth closer, giving more and yet relieving pressure to his building arousal.

It had, however, stopped there. As consciousness regained ground in Lee's head, he remembered his first kiss. He also remembered, without regret, the day that Gaara broke his heart. He had talked his feelings through with Gai-Sensei, during a one-hundred lap race around the village.

Now that he thought on it, Gai had been there for him since childhood. He had always been everything a mentor should be: a friend, a father figure, and a role model. Lee's faith and loyalty to Gai had never wavered. Fondess rose up into his chest even now, inches from what was sure to be his death. And as the finality of unconciousness regained its clutches on him, Lee's last vision was that of Gai bending over him, shielding his open eyes from the moonlight.
