Sleep in my Arms
He had never fallen asleep in someone else’s arms.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to or he didn’t like being touched…because he did want to, he wanted to be touched.
He was just scared.
He was scared that the moment he fell asleep…he would be dead. If he had been any other person, he wouldn’t have to worry about it. He wouldn’t have to be scared that even people he trusted would kill him in a moment of weakness…a moment of sleep. But he had been born and moments later…he was the most hated person in the entire village.
The kyuubi had been sealed inside of him.
Now he barely slept…much less with someone else. He had friends, yes. But that didn’t mean he could fully trust them with his life if he decided to fall asleep. He couldn’t fully trust anyone. He liked to think that he would trust Iruka-Sensei with his life but he knew, if the council ordered him dead, there was no way the chuunin school teacher would be able to stop it. He would just end up dead also…for trying to save him.
There were very few people that he felt absolutely safe around and…sleeping with them, it just wouldn’t happen. He knew he could sleep with Tsunade-baa-chan but…she was busy doing everything to keep the village together and he didn’t want to do anything to bother her. He felt safe, surprisingly, with Ibiki-san but…he was the torture specialist and much too busy to watch over a teenager while he tried to get a few hours of sleep. There was others…but they were just to far out of the realm of possibility to even think of.
His sleep loss all came to a boiling point when he was on a mission and too tired to pay attention properly. He had heard a scream, to this day he didn’t know what the person had said, and then he was going down, his eyes widening as a kunai buried itself in his back. He didn’t remember anything that happened after that, not until he woke up in the Konoha hospital, his very peeved and worried teammates standing around his bed. They were quickly shooed out of the room however, leaving him and the Hokage herself alone…or so he thought.
“You have no idea what Kakashi did to save you.”
Naruto’s heart had sunk at that…he hadn’t seen Kakashi-Sensei yet…he hadn’t been there when he woke up. All of his fears and anxieties coiled together, bringing tears to his eyes and causing his body to shake. “Did he…”
“No.” The curtain separating the two beds in the room suddenly came open, showing a slightly haggard Kakashi sitting there, just like normal, reading his book. He had scratches and cuts going up his arms but what surprised the blonde the most was all he was wearing was a simple gray beater…no mask, no haite or gloves. He looked totally different. Then Tsunade was gone, leaving them alone in the room.
Naruto pushed himself out of his bed, walking a bit shakily over to Kakashi’s and looking down. His eyes were tired, his body still too slow for his normal movements. “Are you ok?” He murmured, just looking over the Sensei that had saved his life over and over. This was one of those people…one of those people that he felt totally and utterly safe with.
“You’re tired.” The silver haired jounin murmured, suddenly dropping his book and dragging the teen on to the bed with him. He had him cuddled back against his chest under the sheets in moments. His battle scarred hand slid into Naruto’s hair, soothing him easily. “It’s ok, you can sleep here.”
“But…” Naruto struggled a bit, trying not to blush as he was held firmly against the warm chest. He finally calmed, unable to keep his eyes open as the rhythmic motions of Kakashi’s breathing made him feel safer then he ever had.
“Sleep in my arms.”
And he did…his head falling to the side, just breathing in his teachers scent as he slowly drifted away, his body finally fully relaxing.
He fell asleep in those warm arms.
Kakashi just smiled, picking up his book as he relaxed, cradling that smaller body in his embrace.
“It’s safe here, you can sleep in my arms.”
