1. 新しい何か の 初め / Hajime no atarashii / The beginning of something new

In the constant search for the perfect vessel, Orochimaru had long ago begun to experiment not only on bodies but also how to make the soul transfer last longer than three years like it did now. He needed a strong body that could become his for an eternity… and if possibly stay young and strong forever as well. The snake-lord wanted to develop a jutsu that did just that.

He tortured countless men, woman; shinobi and normal folk a like to find the perfect solution.

He needed to upgrade his soul-transfer jutsu since the time span from each transport was reduced with months every time and more and more of the absorbed person’s soul stayed with him and interfered with his individuality.

He soon realized that if he wanted a lasting body he would have to mold… or rather modify the soul with the vessel before he consumed it since it appeared to be the only way to make it last longer.

The body apparently couldn´t survive without its original soul… but what would happen if the soul would be able to live forever? Would the body still age as it normally would or would it stay as young as it´s soul?

What could keep a soul young forever?

What did a soul nurture on?

What did it need to survive?

Orochimaru finally found a solution. He modified his soul transfer jutsu by altering the soul inside the body of his “test subjects” after mixing it with a virus that Kabuto had created from the dark half of the Kyuubi no Kitsune which they had found in a young man called Sora about a year ago. He had been crazed and had killed everyone who came near him without hesitation, ripping their throats open and spilled their blood. The young man looked like he was around Sasuke-kun age (19) though he claimed to be much older which Kabuto could confirm after examining him.

Kabuto had succeeded in removing the dark half that had once belonged to the powerful nine tailed demon and Sora had calmed down a bit even if he still acted like he was crazed. He was a fast healer and had huge chakra reserves just like a certain blonde nuisance from Konoha-gakure.

He showed no signs of aging and was able to withstand Orochimaru´s attempts to devour his body and soul. The only thing that seemed to hurt the boy was the rays of the sun… it burned his skin like fire or acid. The strange boy claimed to be thirsty but refused to drink any water or any other liquid or eat any food which left him staving.

Orochimaru just deemed that the boy was stubborn and continued to experiment till he created the first successful vessels that didn´t seem to age, who was tolerant for huge amounts of pain and torture and who didn´t grow tired easily since their chakra levels seemed to have doubled. They had gained agility and speed and were capable and ruthless killers.

The price for such power and near invulnerability was that the body needed a high intake of certain minerals such as hemoglobin and iron. It seemed that the body needed additional red blood vessels which were the ones that could keep the body alive by feeding it with it´s needs.

It was marvelous… no matter how much pain Orochimaru put those vessels through… they just healed right up without leaving any scars to show what had happen to them. The vessels had to be destroyed because they seemed to go crazy after a certain amount of time… maybe mainly because they were left to starve since they couldn´t keep anything in their stomachs except for the sparse injections of Hemoglobin that Kabuto gave them.

The test subject seemed to be weak towards sunlight and fire just like Sora and they would become sick and throw up if they were forced to eat normal food. Alcohol intoxicated them but didn´t do any real harm or good otherwise.

That was a minor setback but surely Orochimaru would be able to solve that little problem once he was immortal. What did the sun matter in comparison to eternal youth, immense strength and near immortality… nothing… well not in Orochimaru´s opinion anyway.

Sasuke had been at the Sound for four years now. He was about to master the final jutsu that Orochimaru could teach him. The Uchiha had been very selective in the jutsus he had craved to learn since he needed certain elemental attacks as well as protective jutsu to be able to defeat his brother.

He had been working on learning a shielding jutsu against a demonic fire attack as powerful as the Amaterasu since daybreak and he was at the end of his strength. He was dripping with sweat and so tired that he could sleep right there on his feet… but at least he had finally perfected the technique.

He was ready to dispose of his “master” and seek out Itachi. Sasuke knew that his brother was a difficult target to hunt down and kill and to ensure victory and revenge he needed a certain sort of bait that his aniki wouldn´t be able to resist.

Sasuke wanted to fight Itachi where and when he wanted it so that he would be in full control at all times. He had sworn to avenge his clan and he was not going to let it go even if it meant that he would lose him life in the attempt to kill his older brother for what he had done.

“Ah, I see that you have finished today’s training, Sasuke-kun,” Kabuto said while he approached the Uchiha, a smirk gracing his lips.

“What do you want four-eyes?” The Uchiha growled and picked up his weapons from the ground.

“Orochimaru just wanted me to make sure that you were alright. You have been training for fourteen hours straight Sasuke-kun.”

“Hn.”

“Come, let me give you something that will make your muscles relax so that you won´t be in pain in the morning.”

Sasuke growled but allowed the silver-haired medic to stick a needle in his arm and inject him with a transparent yellow liquid.

“You might feel a bit queasy… but that´s perfectly normal Sasuke-kun.”

“… Sli-Slightly queasy?” The Uchiha felt his entire body tingle before his knees betrayed him. He stumbled to the ground and felt his vision fail and no matter how hard he tried he wasn´t able to get back on his feet.

“Oh Ups, I think I forgot to mention that you would pass out since it´s a rather strong sedative. Lord Orochimaru has something special up his sleeve… just for you.”

“What if this is going to be a failure Orochimaru-sama? He is a valuable vessel to you… what if he ends up like the other´s? ” Kabuto asked while he pushed his glasses back up the bridge of his nose.

“It won´t be a failure Kabuto. Sasuke-kun is stronger, smarter, has a kekkei genkai and even if it is a failure we still have Itachi-kun, though he will be harder to capture than Sasuke-kun was.”

Kabuto just nodded and watched while his master modified Sasuke´s soul with his new jutsu. The raven cried out in pain even in his unconscious state when his body and soul began to mold into something that would change his life forever.

“Put him into quarantine, have him monitored at all times and let me know once he is ready,” Orochimaru hissed before he left the medic and the whimpering Uchiha alone in the dark and moist dungeon.

Two days later:

“How are you feeling Sasuke-kun? Improved I hope,” The snake lord said with a smirk after he entered the cell. He stared with a hint of satisfaction at the young man who sat on the cold stone floor with his back against the brick wall.

“… What have you done to me?” Was the only reply from the Uchiha who hid in the shadows of the furthest away corner of the cell.

“Just a little experiment to test my new jutsu which will make me truly immortal,” Orochimaru chuckled darkly. “You should be nearly perfect by now… all we need now is to find a cure against the sun’s damaging effect and then you´re mine.”

“Your strength, speed and chakra should have at least doubled. Your heartbeat is slow and nearly undetectable… most people would think you´re dead though you´re not,” Kabuto explained after he stepped into the dimly lit room.

“You should be nearly indestructible except for direct and continuously exposure to sunlight. The others were scorched or burned to ash if they stayed to long in the sun… you won´t feel pain in the same way anymore either… you might feel a bit weak for a few days but it should pass soon. How do you feel? Do you need anything?” The medic asked without any real concern or care for the younger man.

“… I´m thirsty,” the Uchiha hissed in a tone that scared Kabuto more than Orochimaru ever had.

“Kabuto, get some water for my vessel… we don´t want that perfect skin of his to loose its smoothness, now can we,” Orochimaru chuckled darkly while he licked his lips hungrily and stepped closer to the Sharingan wielder.

“As you wish Orochimaru-sama,” the medic said. He was more than happy to leave this new dark being though he was a bit concerned what the snake-sanin was planning to do in his absence.

“Oh and Kabuto.”

“Yes Orochimaru-sama?”

“Take your time. I want to make sure that everything works the way it’s supposed to before I claim his body as mine,” the snake-lord said with a smirk on his pale lips. The Uchiha glared back at his master with sheer anger displayed in coal-black eyes while Kabuto left in a hurry, eager to get away from the darkness that the Uchiha emitted.

The hallways were way too quiet when Kabuto returned an hour later. No sound was heard anywhere, not from the other prisoners or the cells up ahead and it made the young medic breathing speed up as panic threatened to engulf him.

“… Orochimaru-sama?” He called out with a trembling voice when the Uchiha´s containment cell came into his range of vision. He heard a strange gurgling noise when he was less than a few feet away from the cell door.

“Orochimaru-sama? Wha-” He dropped the tray with the bottle of water and the glass onto the floor after he stepped into the dimly lit cell. He didn´t hear the glass hit the floor and break into tiny sharp pieces… all he saw was his whimpering master’s mutilated body on the cold cell floor.

He rushed to the snake-lord´s side and knelt beside him to heal his master. He barely got a chance to touch Orochimaru when a dark shadow stepped in front of him. Sasuke´s crimson eyes were filled with hate, anger and a strange hunger and Kabuto suddenly realized that this experiment would be his last. His screams soon filled the underground compound while the dark haired avenger got his revenge for Kabuto´s betrayal like he had on Orochimaru earlier.

Eight months later:

Naruto was standing in front of the Uchiha mansion. It was supposed to be empty but there was a dim light emitted from behind those heavy blue curtains.

Since when was someone living in Sasuke´s house? Had the Uchiha finally returned to Konoha after all these years?

Naruto turned his gaze to the sky and at the beautiful moon that lit the starless sky. The moon wasn´t full yet but it would be in a few nights from now.

“Please come inside Naruto-sama.” A man with the shark-like teeth and light blue hair urged him to enter the mansion.

´Somehow… he reminds me of Zabuza… or Kisame with those teeth… maybe this man´s from Kiri-gakure too? ` Naruto thought and entered the house.

“He´s awaiting you in the ballroom… please follow me,” the blue-haired man told him while flashing the blonde nin a toothy smile.

Naruto nodded and entered the ballroom which was bathed in darkness.

“So you heard my call and came Dobe.”

“Sasuke? What do you-”

Naruto darted up in his bed, bathed in a thin layer of sweat like so many night before this one.

´Damn… this fucking dream again. ` He had had the exact same dream for nearly a month now and it was rubbing him his nightly rest and Naruto was beginning to think that he would go crazy if these dreams continued to haunt him.

´Damn… why do I have to dream about the Teme? It´s not like I´ll ever be able to bring him back and he´s definitely not going to return here on his own… it´s crazy… I´m going crazy, ` the blonde nin sighed. ´This must be the final stage where I´ll lose my sanity… `

He looked at the watch on his nightstand. He didn´t even have to turn on the light anymore. He could see perfectly in the darkness thanks to Kyuubi´s gift.

03:34 in the morning… He had to be up in less than two hours… damn insomnia… as if his condition wasn´t bad enough as it was without it.

´Guess I better get some more rest or I won´t be able to take care of my job tomorrow.` He thought sadly as he remembered that all he was allowed to do for a living was paperwork… since Baa-chan wouldn´t let him do anything else anymore.
