Author’s Note

Hi guys!

I don’t know what the hell this is, but I’m in the mood for angst. I’m also putting off updating my YYH KuramaxHIei fanfic. So, yeah. Enjoy!

Naruto sat up with a start. Looking around, he frowned. “Where am I?” he asked himself aloud. When had this place changed? How could it have changed over night? Naruto couldn’t understand that at all. The last thing he remembered was crashing into a small clearing after being blown away by a blast of chakra as the nin he killed finished a jutsu that caused him to explode. Naruto had crashed into a meadow and blacked out.

Shaking the cricks out of his body, Naruto looked down at the roots that had him restrained. “That’s weird.” Naruto muttered to himself as he removed the roots and go to his feet. Dusting himself of, Naruto hurried to get home. He had to see Sasuke. Sasuke was waiting at home for him. Naruto grinned to himself, cheered by the thought of seeing his lover again.

Sasuke had come home only recently, the desires for revenge complete as he eradicated. Naruto had been ecstatic of course, and more than eager to resume their friendship, pick up where they had left off. Unfortunately, Sasuke didn’t have that in mind. He’d done nothing but pursue Naruto in a romantic way, and while Naruto had never said it out loud, he had cared for the last Uchiha in that sort of way as well; he just hadn’t realized it yet. They had been together for at least seven months when Baa-chan had asked him to take the mission. The mission was about a missing nin hiding somewhere deep within the land of waves that Naruto had to assassinate. The missing nin was causing lots of headaches for the hokages as he was sewing unrest and mistrust amongst the people in the villages, not to mention, he was taking out local respected officials in every town or village he made his way into.

Naruto had protested, knowing that the mission would take awhile, and he didn’t want to leave Sasuke, even if Sasuke had been encouraging. Sasuke couldn’t go with him since Sasuke was on house arrest and regaining the trust of the remaining elders. So, that meant that Naruto had to take the solo mission on his own. Sasuke hadn’t been happy about it at first and it had lead to a lot of arguments between them in the month prior to the mission.

Flashback

“Fuck it Naruto, I don’t want you to go! Tell the hag you’re not taking the mission!” Sasuke demanded angrily.

“I can’t teme! I already agreed to do it! Besides, I’ll be back in time for our one year anniversary! We can celebrate as much as you want then. I’ll even let you plan the details!” Naruto pleaded with his lover, knowing that if Sasuke would just give in, things would go smoother now.

Sasuke stared hard at his fidgeting lover, looking for any reason to say no to his lover’s request. With a sigh he pulled Naruto in for a harsh, but brief kiss as he said grudgingly “Fine. You can go dobe. But you’d better keep your word about coming back in time for our one year anniversary.”

With a whoop of happiness, Naruto tackled his lover in a passionate kiss, removing their clothing in the process. Naruto wanted to show his lover just how grateful he was that he was being allowed to go on the mission with the promise of returning in time for their anniversary.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The day Naruto had left, he’d kissed his lover back, promising he’d be back in a month, giving his lover the month of their anniversary to get things done. Naruto, as he left, promised himself that he would be back the day before their anniversary. He wouldn’t miss their anniversary for the world. Naruto had taken off quickly, intent on making good time so that he could be back earlier to see his lover and enjoy their anniversary.
Naruto grinned to himself. He was going to be early! Yeah! Excited, Naruto took off, heading straight for Konoha. On the way, Naruto stopped to go pick up a weapon kit for their anniversary. Naruto was confused by the strange looks that they were giving him. However, he shrugged it off easily. People were always staring at him so it wasn’t a problem for him. Naruto was used to it and he had learned to pretty much ignore it. Kit in hand, Naruto tucked his purchase away into his orange jumpsuit and he made his way home in a hurry. Naruto grinned to himself and said “The teme’s gonna be so surprised when I get home early!” Naruto chuckled and let out an energetic “YA-HOOOOOOOOOOOO~!”as he sped up, taking off for home to see his lover.
When Naruto landed at the gates, he grinned at the guards and waved, walking past them. Naruto didn’t even notice the surprised looks on the guard’s faces. He didn’t even notice the stunned looks of the villagers either. He just focused on getting back to the compound to where his lover was probably waiting for him to return. Naruto grinned and ran down the street, blowing like a whirlwind past Ichiraku’s, even though he was tempted to have a bowl before he went home. No! Naruto shook his head. Sasuke first, ramen second! Naruto snorted to himself, if Sasuke heard that, Naruto knew Sasuke would be a smug bastard for weeks after.
When Naruto arrived at the main house of the Uchiha compound, he threw open the door and shouted happily “OI TEME I’M HOOOOOOOOOOME~! Where are yo-“ Naruto stopped and looked around. Why was everything covered in dust? Naruto blinked and said “I didn’t think the bastard would let it go this far while I was gone for a month.” Naruto set his pack by the door and wandered through the house, looking for Sasuke. The whole mansion was neat, except for the fact that it was covered in dust. Naruto wandered back to the door of the house when he heard the patter of foot falls.
Naruto was surprised, and happy to see Sakura-chan coming at a full run towards him. When Naruto and Sasuke had originally gotten together, she’d been angry, cruel even. However, as time went on, she came to accept their relationship, seeing as they were both happy with each other. Sakura just wanted what was best for the both of them. Sakura stopped in front of Naruto and just stared in shock. Sakura burst into tears and threw herself into Naruto’s arms. Surprised, Naruto said “Woah, Woah, Sakura-chan! What’s the big deal? I’ve only been gone for a month, are you really that happy to see me?” Sakura stopped. Pulling back, she stared up at Naruto with tears in her eyes unshed. She said “What do you mean a month?” Naruto said with a shrug “I mean what I said. I was just trying to get home in time for me and Sasuke’s one year anniversary.”
At Sakura’s expression of even more tears, Naruto stopped. What was he missing? Did Naruto forget something important? Had he missed Sasuke’s birthday or something? Naruto frowned and said “Hey, Sakura-chan I didn’t forget something did I?” Sakura looked up at Naruto and shook her head, wiping the tears from her tea green eyes. “No Naruto, you didn’t forget anything.” Naruto grinned a sigh of relief and said “Okay good. So, why is the mansion all dirty? I didn’t think the teme would willingly let this place fall into such a state unless he was gone on a mission.” Naruto finally realized something else too. Sakura looked different. She was……..older, more mature. There was something funny about her, and Naruto just couldn’t place a finger on it. He finally added “And why do you look so different?”
Sakura said softly “Let’s go to my place Naruto. We need to talk.” Naruto nodded and followed after Sakura, not sure he was ready for the talk.
When they arrived at Sakura’s apartment, Naruto sat at the table in silence as he waited for Sakura to finish making tea. Setting out some stacks across from Naruto and began drinking her tea. Sakura spoke finally, “Naruto, has it really been a month since you left?” Naruto looked her confusion and nodded his head. “Yeah, a month. Why? Did something happen to Sasuke?” Naruto looked worried at that point, but his fear was alleviated when Sakura shook her head. “No Sasuke’s fine. It’s you that’s in trouble.” Naruto rolled his eyes and said “What? The Elder’s had a problem with me, their ‘precious’ kyuubi container being gone for a month long mission again?” Sakura offered Naruto a small smile and shook her head. She asked, haven’t you been wondering at all Naruto? Why the villagers and everyone else was staring at you?” Naruto gave Sakura a weird look and said “No. They’re always staring at me, so why would I notice?” Sakura smiled sadly at Naruto, and she said “Naruto……”
Naruto looked serious as he watched Sakura. Finally he said “What? I don’t get it. Stop giving me that creepy sad look! It’s like someone’s died or something equally bad. Just spit it out already Sakura-chan!” Sakura smiled sadly and said after brushing a stray lock of pink hair back from her face “Alright, just remember you told me to.” Naruto nodded his head emphatically, trying to show that he understood. Sakura stared Naruto straight in the eye and inhaled
“Naruto, you’ve been gone for three years not one month.”
