Blood Orange

( A/N :
Why yes, this WAS up here before under a different name. I decided that I couldn't handle a name that had the same initials as Erectile Dysfunction. Urgh

Bleh. Can't fit shit into the summary. This is a 2nd person PoV fic, which means everything will be happening to YOU. That's right YOU. In the present tense. If this bothers you, or you're a male reader, I'd suggest leaving, as it's written from a female pov. But if not, hey, grab a cookie and relax. It's going to be a long ride.

This takes place after the Pain/Pein and Naruto fight, and a little before the most recent Kage summit (Tsunade's out of her coma, but the joint Shinobi army hasn't been formed yet.) And it'll be slightly, just slightly AU.

The main paring is going to be YouxKakashi, with implied/past tense YouxJiraiya. Expect angst. Lots of it.

I think that's everything.

Enjoy.

Ichi . . . ne . . . san . . .

“No ma'm, I'm holding up five fingers. Five.”

Through the misty multicolored blur your vision had been reduced to, you could just barely make out what you assumed was a nurse, and a male one judging by the voice.. You strain your eyes, but to no avail, as your eyesight only seems to deteriorate further into distant vivid pinpricks of light.

“It looks like her vision hasn't completely returned. Can I get a Hyuuga over here? I need a full retinal exam and damage synopsis.”

You blink, or at least you think you do. Your perception hardly changes as close your eyes, the only difference being the subtle lack of light. Staring, straining, squinting as hard as you can produces no results, and you're left with a fuzzy plethora of faint lights and pastels. Everything, anything was a blur.

Your throat is painfully dry as you attempt to speak, several weak coughs distorting your question.

“Excuse me, ma'm?” the presumably male voice replies.

“How long have I been out?”

“A month and a half, ma'm. It's February now.”

“What?” you croak, rolling slightly to the side. “Why, what's...what's going on? What's happened?”

“I'm afraid I don't have the clearance-”

“Kotetsu, it's fine” Comes a soft female voice, the pink blur you could discern was Godaime's student, the head medic nin under Tsunade, if you remembered correctly. “ In the state she's in she's not going to be trading enemy information. We've removed the transmitters, and Pein is gone. There's no way for her to channel information.”

“Except for the one on her forehead. That one's -”

“Non functioning” She cut him off. “We've had Hyuuga and Yamanaka check for any ingoing or outgoing chakra. The piercings been effectively cut off from any foreign source.”

You can see, rather, sense her looming over you, warily inspecting your body.

“You...” you start weakly. “You're Sakura, right?”

The figure seems to stiffen and you know you've guessed correctly.

“Yes.” She answered curtly. “How would you know?”

“I guess no-one said anything.” you mutter, breathing heavily. “I know one of your teammates, Naruto, he-”

“How do you know Naruto?” she snaps, suddenly seeming incredibly uncomfortable.

“I was a shinobi here once.” you reply squinting, what little your eyes could see catching on a tray near your bedside, a tray reeking of metal, chakra, and old blood. your bloodbut not your chakra.

“What're those-?”

“Nevermind about those. How do you know Naruto?” she repeats sharply, obviously growing impatient.

“We both knew Ero-Sennin.”

You can almost feel the shock radiating off her. “I. . .I see. How'd you know them? I wasn't aware that Jiraiya-sama had taken on more than one student.”

You bite your lip, turning to face away from her inquisitive glare.

“. . .I wasn't a student.”

A pause.

“What was your relationship with him then?”

An eye involuntarily twitches, and you suddenly feel anger flooding your chest.

“That's not important”

“Oh course it's important!” Sakura retorts. “This is incredibly vital information we're dealing with here!

“Explain to me exactly HOW my sex life or current lack thereof qualifies as “Vital information?” you hiss through clenched teeth. If there was one thing in the whole wide world you didn't want to do right now it was try and explain something you yourself hardly understood.

“Sex life?” she starts slowly. “SEX life? I don't even, how does that-?”

“Haruno-san, “ Kotetsu lays a hand on her shoulder. Perhaps we should let it- I mean her see what's happened.”

“Right...right...” Sakura mutters, attempting to regain her composure and stifle the embarrassed blush creeping up her face as she leans in close to you, enough that you can almost make out facial features. “I'm sorry for being so rash, I suppose you're weren't always like this, none of you were, but you're the only one that's still active.” She places a hand softly on your forehead, the trained gentle, caring side of her becoming apparent. “What was your name...before?”

“Before? Before WHAT? I'm “____” and I always was. What the hell are you talking about?”

“____”? Sakura repeats. “Oh...oh dear...” she pauses, appearing a mixture of thoughtful and borderline disturbed. “You were an ANBU alongside Hatake Kakashi, weren't you? And you were-”

“Yes, I WAS” you growl. “And I PREFERE that you don't mention the bastard around me if you don't want me to die of a heart attack.”

Her expression softens. “So you really were the 'Tori-dono' Kakashi-sensei talked abou-”

“Haruno-san, this isn't the time to be questioning the subject about her relationships.”

“No, no it's not, you're right.” she mumbles under her breath. “So, you really did used to be a leaf shinobi. “She trails off, turning back to Kotetsu. “Is she still having trouble seeing?”

“Yeah, the absence of the Rinnengan on the bodies seems to have permanently effected her vision. I doubt she'll ever regain full function of her eyes.

“Ri-rinnengan?” you stutter. In an instant, it all comes flooding back. He'd killed you. He'd fucking KILLED you. In the rain village. Two months ago, and now you find yourself in a Konoha hospital, nearly blind? What happened? What the FUCK happened?

“____-san” Sakura says quietly. I think you have the right to know now, you're not what you think you are...” She slides the tray of the metallic rods closer to your, holding them up to your eye level. You'd seen these before, before you died, or you thought you had. That bastard Pein had them all over his body, or bodies, using them to communicate with each other. But they reeked of blood, you're blood. Why...?

. . .No. . .

A sick nauseous feeling writhes in the pit of your stomach as you cautiously lift your fingers up to your face, and you feel them.

Holes. Wounds more like it. Six wounds.

Six metallic rods.

Without thinking you yank a fistful of shoulder-length hair from the side of your head and you warily inspect it.

Blood Orange.

. . .Oh FUCK no. . .

Sakura warily hands you a mirror, and with shaking hands, you accept, moving it close enough for your damage eyes to comprehend.

It's then that your heart stops in it's tracks.

It's then that you understand.

It's then that you begin screaming at the top of your lungs, the mirror shattering on the floor as it leaves your hands.
