Memories and Goodbyes

Raven meets his team at dawn the next day as per usual but instead of training he tells them about their first mission. We’ve received a request from a neighboring farming community to deal with a wild boar that is currently plaguing them.”

“Why should we care?” Siefer asks. “Can’t they handle this one themselves? Ow, that hurt,” he nearly yells rubbing the new knot on the back of his head.

“Good,” Rinoa tells him satisfied with the result of her hit. “They’re farmers not hunters baka,” she tells him. “They don’t know the first thing about killing a wild boar.”

“Rinoa’s right,” Squall interrupts. “As for why we should care,” he continues. “We depend on the farmers for most of the produce we consume,” he explains. “In return they come to us for protection. Besides if we finish soon enough they might throw a feast in our honor,” he adds with a smirk.

“A FEAST,” Siefer yells practically drooling at the idea. “With dancing and girls?” He looks at Raven expectantly. “What are we waiting for lets go.” he nearly begs the older shinobi.

Raven laughs before he tells them to meet him at the gates in an hour. “Use the time to grab any supplies you think you’ll need since we won’t have time to pick them up once we leave. Oh and Siefer meet me in the courtyard in five minutes,” he tells the younger Hiroku ninja before fading into the shadows.

==============================

The mission went better than Raven expected and the feast the villagers threw for them made the Genin’s day. Siefer moved from one girl after another never leaving the dance floor until Rinoa, literally, dragged him kicking and screaming so they could return to give their report.

Siefer had loved the clothes Raven gave him and vowed to take exceptionally good care of them since they once belonged to his hero. By the time they were dismissed from the Hokage’s office all the Genin wanted to do was to go home and sleep before their next mission the following day.

==============================

That evening Raven kneels in front of the memorial and places a dozen snow white Lilies on the ground in front of the stone marker before folding his hands in silent prayer. ‘Honorable Kami-sama hear my thoughts as I offer my blessings and my prayers for those that have fought and died so that we my live.’

As he continues to kneel he allows his mind to wander back through the years as his eyes come across the name of the woman that was to have been his sister-in-law. ‘Raya Monunoki.’

********** FLASHBACK **********

Raven felt guilty watching them as they snuggled and kissed but he knew they couldn‘t see him since he was trying out the Shadow Vision Jutsu he had just learned. After a few minutes they get up and head out for their date. Raven follows them with the Jutsu thankful for the late hour and moonless night as it would have been nearly impossible to spy on them otherwise.

Raya and Koga walk for several minutes in comfortable silence until they arrive at the Inuzuka compound. There they make their way inside to join Kimiko, Hana and a group of others that he’s never met for what appears to be a celebration of some kind. Though the vision in his mind has no sound he can imagine the conversations they‘re having and wishes that he could be a part of it.

It took him a few minutes to realize that they‘re celebrating Koga and Raya‘s engagement and that everyone there is one of their friends, including the two ANBU still in uniform. Raven could only hope that when the time came for his engagement party he had as many friends attend as they did. They received congratulations and knowing smiles from all the guests and even a few pecks on the cheeks from a few of the more inebriated kunoichi.

After the party they walked through the park and sat on a bench just holding each other as they both look up at the stars. They talked about the future and how much they were looking forward to starting a family of their own. As the vision began to fade Raven was certain he heard Koga say, “I Love You Raya-chan.”

********** END FLASHBACK **********

Raven stands and turns to leave when he notices Kimiko standing a few yards away. Walking towards his older sister he gives her a warm smile in greeting. “Kimiko-neechan,” he says. “You just get back?”

“Hai,” she answers softly looking down at the ground. Raven then realizes that she is still wearing her ANBU uniform and her mask is covering her face.

“Is something wrong?” he asks as a feeling of uneasiness begins to wash over him.

“Raven-kun I-I don’t know how to say this,” she begins grateful that her mask hides the tears in her eyes. “Koga-niisan is…” the lump in her throat traps the rest of her words as she falls to her knees clinging to her younger brother’s waist.

Raven fights back his own tears as realization finally hits him. He eases her back so that he can kneel in front of her. He removes her mask and upon seeing the devastation on her face wraps his arms around her offering her the love and support they both need at that moment. ‘You’re finally with them Koga-niisan.’

They hold each other as they cry for the man they both loved and will forever miss, the man they both called brother. In the morning word will reach the remainder of their clan and from there the rest of Konoha that Koga Hiroku, heir to the Hiroku clan, was Killed In Action but for now the only ones that mourn his loss are the ones that feel it the most.

==============================

A/N: I wish to apologize for a slightly shorter chapter then I usually write. There was no easy way to write this chapter and to go into more detail about their first mission would have only taken away from the rest of the chapter.

I know some of you liked Koga and would have liked to have seen him in the story more. As much as I hated to disappoint you his death was necassery for the remainder of the story and even the series to progress the way I want it to. As for Koga and Raya's relationship, that will be covered in one possibly motr short fics that I have planned for later.
