Chapter: Matsuri

Author Note & Warnings: Okay I promise this is the last stalling chapter and next chapter will be a sweet ass fight scene. Or so I hope anyway. Um... hints of past NaruGaa, sappy moment between siblings. Possible OOC when concerning Gaara in your eyes. The chapter centers around Matsuri and how she thinks and feels about what's going on. You don't like it? Then you might want to skip this chapter.
Chapter dedication: Weskerism!!! Much love to you! (hopefully I spelt that right lol)

Chapter: Matsuri

She was shaking, about to break down into a million little unrecognizable pieces, so she had left the group for some relative privacy. Walking up a flight of stairs, then looking back behind her to be sure no one had followed her, she fell heavily against the wall and let the tears fall freely down her face. Lifting her left hand to cover her mouth, as a loud sob choked its way up her throat, to be sure no one would hear her. She was Gaara-sama’s student she couldn’t afford weakness at this juncture of time. If he wasn’t crying, and he had killed his own brother, then she couldn’t be crying either.

Matsuri sunk to the floor as her knees got weak and horrific images past threw her mind like silent film. So many faces, so much blood, so many things she didn’t want to remember. A quiet wail made it past her hand and her shoulders began to shake as Matsuri began to cry in earnest. All those children she’d seen being raped, their small innocent bodies wrapped up in odd angles or folded carelessly like pretzel dough. All the open cavities of villagers and ninja alike as the sick feasted upon them like wild beasts. That, that woman who’d had vacant eyes but her chest still rose and fell as three men continued to grope her, lick her, fuck her naked and bruised body. Those same eyes as she slit her own throat and fell to the floor with the men Matsuri had killed to save her.

She hadn’t saved her, the woman had been dead long before she’d ever gotten there. What Matsuri should have done was kill her, but in the end she had to watch in horror as the woman did it herself. A wail rose up from her throat and she let it echo down the halls no longer caring as her mind shattered, her will left her shaken and broken. Curling in on her self she sobbed until her chest began to hurt from the position, and then she let her whole body hit the ground and covered her tear stained face.

Oh God why? Why had you allowed this to happen? So many innocent people gone or dying at this time. At that moment, she felt hate rise from her belly and pour into her chest and her unshakable faith in the lord turned to indignant rage. If he existed, if that so called God truly lived then he didn’t care about the people here. He had allowed their relative peace be turned into a hell. She loathed the deity a feeling so dark that it made her cold inside but made her body hot.

“Matsuri.” A calm voice said from just below.

She sat up quickly and rubbed at her face, sniffing, as she tried to collect herself. She couldn’t let her Kazekage see her like this he expected better, deserved better, from her. She started when strong arms encircled her and warmth gathered her in its embrace. Gaara never hugged, at least very rarely, and he was using this intimacy to comfort her. Slowly she wrapped her arms around him in return and realized that he was tense, and shaking deep inside as well.

“I’m sorry Gaara…” she breathed for his loss.

He would never cry, she knew this, but he still felt the pain like everyone else. It was shocking to realize that he was more like her than she had previously believed. Matsuri opened her eyes when a third person joined the hug and saw Temari beside them hugging the two of them together. A strange tightness entered her chest and she felt tears prickle the corners of her eyes once more. She was apart of a family, his family, their family.

“Oh Gaara,” Temari soothed brushing her fingers threw his red hair before turning to place a kiss to her temple. “Matsuri.”

Matsuri let out another sob, and heard the sand rise to encircle them in its protective embrace so that no one else could be apart of this moment. She felt a strange sense of privilege to be here comforting Gaara and Temari and being comforted in turn. Gaara’s body shook and she tightened her hold as he placed his face in the crook of her neck. Temari rested her cheek against the top of her head and she could hear her crying as well. They were morning the loss of their brother, of the good friends they had had, and the down fall of a village they had been unable to protect.

Once she had been in love with Gaara, practically hero worshiped him, and had wanted to give him children but now it was different. She wasn’t sure when her feelings had shifted from a crush to that of love for a brother but here she was with her adoptive family and thankful. Matsuri felt warmth wash over her, maybe God wasn’t so horrible after all. He’d given her a family after all to be with in her time of pain and need, and had given her to them for the same reasons. She was still angry at him, but less so with the knowledge that she wasn’t alone.

Matsuri wasn’t sure how long they had stayed in the bubble of sand simply being, but when they broke apart there was a calm acceptance of everything that had happened. She nodded to Gaara with a small smile and he smiled back at her with his eyes. Temari hugged them both one more time as if reassuring herself that it really was alright with them for now. The sand disappeared into the gourd and the three of them looked at each other one last moment. They had lost a brother, but they hadn’t lost each other, and that was what counted.

“How are you handling things?” She asked the Hyuuga.

His pale eyes focused on her and even as the words left his mouth she knew they were to be a lie, “I am fairing well.”

“You shouldn’t lie.”

He seemed slightly stunned, and then annoyed at himself no doubt, “It’s nothing to concern yourself of.”

“Neji right?” She asked him.

He nodded at her and went back to looking out over the village waiting for something to happen.

“I know that this isn’t your village, and that you had a large family back at Konoha, but that doesn’t mean you can’t talk to us.” She stated quietly.

His pale eyes darted towards her from the corner of his eyes and he seemed pained for a moment. Maybe she shouldn’t have mentioned his family, it wouldn’t be something she’d want to think about and she winced. Apparently she had picked up Gaara’s habit of just stating the truth with no pause of thought about what it could mean to others.

“To be honest I care very little about my blood family. I care about the family of friends that I gained because of Naruto.”

“Oh,” she replied at a loss of what to say.

He seemed to find humor in that moment, “my family and I have never been, how do you say, on good terms with one another.”

“That must have been lonely.”

He shrugged, “I suppose so. I was to angry to see past myself.”

“So you were like Gaara-sama then.” She stated.

He took a deep breath in, and she could tell he regretted it just a bit as the smell was rancid, “I never really thought of it that way.”

“It’s not just me that you resemble. Naruto, all the other demon hosts, and even Sasuke have a very common back ground.” Gaara said walking up behind them calmly.

“Uchiha is a stubborn selfish bastard.”

“Perhaps, but so were we at one point.” Gaara informed him.

Matsuri thought that one over as did Neji. It was sound logic she supposed, but the impact that Sasuke had on the people was much more profound. Then again maybe not, she glance at Gaara, hadn’t he on many occasions almost killed the village single handedly? Hadn’t his own family been terrified of him? It slowly dawned on her what Gaara was getting at. Gaara had done the things he’d done because he was afraid of getting hurt and terrified of the people who were in turn afraid of him. Terror and fear bred hate which only continued it on further.

“Are you telling me that you do not wish to see him dead? He removed your lover from this plain.”

“I didn’t say that. All I’m saying is this moment could have been made by any of us if we hadn’t let go of our hate.”

“You really think you would have done this Gaara-sama?” Matsuri asked.

“Of coarse I would have. I hated every living thing besides myself. I wanted everyone to feel that too.”

Neji sighed, “yes I suppose that would be true of me as well.”

“But isn’t this just to much?” She queried.

“Yes, but that doesn’t mean I should hate him. He does need to pay for this, but not just because of hate for what he has done.”

Matsuri thought that over in her head, maybe….

“Naruto has been trying to teach everyone of us that since he met each one of us.” Neji mused, “yet you the ex-sociopath understood it best.”

“I think I understood because of what I had already done. I’m pretty sure that’s why Pein did what he did in the end as well. I think in order to learn that lesson in its entirety one must be completely in the darkness.” Gaara replied with a frown.

“Perhaps that is true.” Neji concurred.

Matsuri looked out over the village and understood the lesson herself. She frowned her eyes sad, Gaara was right. She wouldn’t have understood what he had meant without being here in the moment. Death, hatred, and fear taught people many things about themselves. She would continue to fight, not because she had to, or because she was angry, but because something had to be done so that the world would be balanced again and she wanted to be apart of that something.

She looked at the two men she stood by and knew that they too felt this pull. Neji may still be angry but if he were to kill the Uchiha she assumed it would be for the safety of others not for his selfish hate. Though she didn’t know that man very well and that could be wrong, but she would hope that she was right.
