I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Interlude II
A/N: okay, here's gaara's interlude. i don't think it turned out quite how i said it was going to. oh well. the next interlude is naruto's so maybe something will happen then. now, in this one, when sasuke is referred to as 'uchiha', it's part of gaara's thoughts. when he's referred to as 'sasuke', it's part of the narration.
at first, for the end of this interlude, i was going to have gaara want to sabotage sasuke and naruto's relationship--on purpose. but now i, with the way i ended it, he's going to sabotage it on accident. yep, that's where the angst will come in. but i promise it won't last long, and sasuke and naruto will work things out. cause, really, it's not so much gaara says something he shouldn't have as sasuke's a paranoid bastard who thinks everyone's out to get him and twists things into his own reality.
you know, totally off topic here, but i checked out the yugioh section earlier today. what the fuck is with all the kaiba/jou stories? what the hell does a girl have to do to get a good 'i just kicked your ass in duel monsters so you have to do what i say' kaiba/yami fic?
anyway, thanks to all my wonderful reviewers. for all of your support i'm giving you a halloween gift. ready? here goes: in three chapters (aka chapter 12), there will. be. smut. happy halloween, just in case i don't update before then ^___~
Gaara POV

“Calm down, guys. I’m here for one thing; once I take out the Akatsuki, I’m leaving Konoha.”
And he would return to Suna with Gaara, as it should be. Oh, Gaara held no hopes that Naruto would ever see him as more than a friend, but for the past ten years, it had been hard to keep the madness at bay. Only thoughts of how disappointed and worried Naruto would be had kept Gaara sane. But if he could have the blonde back, he’d feel just the slightest bit better.
But the question wasn’t so much could he have the blonde back from Konoha as could he have the blonde back from Uchiha. And that question didn’t come up so much from the way Uchiha acted around Naruto as how close Naruto had let the Uchiha get. Naruto didn’t let anyone close, not after finding out about Kyuubi. And here he let Uchiha touch him, yell at him, call him names; he even let Uchiha know about Kyuubi. That pissed Gaara off more than anything.
He turned to glare at Sasuke, only to see a kunai drop from the pale man’s hand and him walk out the door. What the fuck was wrong with Uchiha?
“Sasuke!”
“Where the hell does he think he’s going?”
Gaara paid the Hokage no mind as he watched confusedly, though one couldn’t tell by his impassive features, as Naruto ran out the door after the brooding shinobi. Something had just happened here, and Gaara wanted to find out what.
“Excuse me, Hokage-sama, but I don’t believe you were done with Naruto. I shall retrieve him.” Before anyone could protest, Gaara was out the door. He picked up the two chakra signals easily, neither one making an effort to hide. But Gaara didn’t want either of them knowing he was there, so he masked his own.
He followed them to a park somewhere far away from the tower and stayed to the trees that surrounded the area. He watched as Naruto called out to Sasuke, and the pale man stopped. Sasuke didn’t face Naruto, and he heard the brunette ask what Naruto wanted.
Who was Itachi? Friends are a weakness, huh?
“Sasuke, you’re not making any sense!”
“You said you were leaving, Naruto!” Sasuke whipped around to face the blonde. “You said you were fucking leaving!”
“Sasuke, I have to leave!”
Yes, he had to leave. He was going home, with Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro, his family. There was no way Gaara was going to leave Naruto in a village that would gut him the first chance they got, as that little scene in the conference room had proved. Though, if he thought about it, things weren’t going to be much better in Suna. They pretty much accepted Gaara, as son of the deceased Kazekage, but Naruto was a different story. He was an outsider with a dangerous and bloodthirsty demon inside him, a demon that could give Shukaku a run for his money.
“…And now the one person that I thought could show me the same amount of consideration that Kakashi has is fucking saying that he’s leaving! Now I know it was selfish and foolish of me to ever assume I deserved something like that!”
“Shut up, teme!”
Gaara watched as Naruto moved and took a panicked Sasuke into his embrace. Naruto was hugging someone? And not just hugging, it seemed, but holding. Naruto was slightly shorter than Sasuke, so his face was pressed into the crook of Sasuke’s neck, and Sasuke’s forehead was on Naruto’s shoulder. Gaara was momentarily taken aback by the picture they made. They seemed to fit together perfectly, sunlight wrapped around moonbeams. After a moment, he saw Sasuke’s arms tighten around Naruto, and he suddenly got it.
Uchiha was in love with the blonde. The cold, emotionless bastard that he’d fought and defeated had somehow come to love another. Gaara had never known what had made the Uchiha into what he was—though he had heard of the Uchiha massacre—but apparently it had all been just a terribly convincing and deceptive act. Uchiha was just as lonely as he and Naruto, and perhaps even more so. Gaara had grown up with Naruto by his side, and Uchiha had had no one.
However, even if it were true, there was no way Naruto would return the feelings.
“Go home, Sasuke. I’m going to tell Tsunade-baa-chan a few more things, and then I’ll be there. Okay?”
He saw Sasuke nod his head and move away from the blonde. When the brunette had left the park, Gaara made to follow, but Naruto’s call stopped him.
“Gaara, I want a word with you.” Naruto turned, and Gaara came up to him silently. He looked up into the blue eyes of his best friend. Gaara noticed a wet spot on Naruto’s shoulder. Had Uchiha been crying? “Why, oh why, were you following us? And eavesdropping? That’s unbecoming of a Kazekage.”
Gaara smirked. “What would you know about it? You’re the one calling the Hokage ‘Tsunade-baa-chan.’”
“Answer the question.” Oh, Naruto was serious.
“I came to retrieve you. Tsunade wasn’t done.” Gaara paused, then, “Why did you go after him?” Blue eyes widened slightly.
“Why Gaara, could it be that you’re jealous?” A hand came up and landed on his shoulder. “Come on, Gaara, you’re my best friend!” Naruto’s loud laughter filled the empty space around them.
“And Sasuke?”
“Sasuke? Well, Sasuke is… Sasuke is… Well, he’s…”
Gaara watched in astonishment as something akin to pain flitted quickly over the animated man’s features. Perhaps it was… longing?
“He’s what, Naruto?”
“He’s just… a really cool guy. He didn’t reject me; he’s my friend.”
And Gaara was the Wind Lord’s wife. He let out a sigh. Maybe Uchiha was on to something: maybe Naruto really was a dobe.
“Let’s get going. You don’t want to keep Uchiha waiting.”

oh where oh where has my little plot gone? oh where oh where can it be? where's the action and where's itachi? oh where oh where is he?
seriously, sing it. it sounds cool. anyway, i just realized that the major fight scene is a looooooooooooong way off. does that bother anybody? and i can't really write battle sequences, though i may do a one-shot just to practice. and when i do that, if you all read it and review, i can promise it will end in smut. but, i don't know when i'll get around to it exactly. just look out for it.
so, does anybody absolutely hate the way i've characterized gaara here? i did say he'd be overprotective. and now he's sorta a champion of naruto and sasuke's cause, even if those two have no idea what the cause is yet. ahahaha. yeah, anyway, thanks for reading!
