Leading the Leaf

Chapter 11 Leading the Leaf

Eerie silence occupied the village streets as war’s evidence less its destruction lurked from house to post. Citizens were ushered from Hokage Mountain in two single-line formations towards cobble stone paths leading to their homes, ordered to remain until notice. The autumn breeze scented of misery, and fear; taking a whiff closing his eyes, he savored victories sweet nectar – turning Madara strolled inside - sat behind his mahogany desk, and peered through the large window overlooking his village. Yes HIS village. Konoha’s takeover was swift one casualty; a churnin, who played hero, yet died a fool. Did he not detect Peins’ chakra to know he was superior, prior to blindly attacking? Hump, and Tsunade’s look of outrage when told to assume her duty as head Medic-nin at Konoha Hospital had been euphoric.

A rapt on the solid oak door sounded – a familiar chakra signature filtered across his senses the Kyuubi’s vessel, or is it hanyo. If Madara were less of a man he would laugh in glee, and what was that underlying scent surrender. He felt a thrill not experienced since a boy training with a Battle Fan alongside his father. Masking his excitement the Shadow Leader bided his new subordinate entry.

Naruto’s face remained lake placid calm, but his eyes burned with rage boring Madara’s face in fury; Sasuke followed shutting the door silently behind them. All was quiet as each man eyed the other one pissed, the other pleased.

“I will get straight to the point, Uzumaki-san, your options are to serve me willingly, or the ones you hold dear shall suffer. I am not unreasonable. However, refusal will not be accepted I have no qualms about taking lives.”

“Hai, Hogokage-sama.”

“Very good, Sasuke will be your partner should things get out of hand.”

The blonde shinobi contemplated how long until he snaps. He was fully aware of this psychotic man’s intent to use those dearest as leverage. He only hoped Itachi’s plan worked incurring as little loss as possible.

“Remember Naruto-kun, when dealing with an enemy such as my ancestor mollification with obedience is necessary. Than once his guard is lowered you strike, but Madara’s a battle hardened ninja so, our actions must be extreme……even crossing lines of morality.”

“I will not do this, Itachi…..losing my morale…..sacrificing who I am.” The Uchiha snapped his wrist sending a kunai sailing towards the younger shinobi’s head, reacting quickly Naruto expertly captured both weapons between his thumb, and index finger.

“There is little consequence to Madara upon taking a life to achieve his goal - there is no morale, no sense of honor beyond fighting a worthy opponent. In his eyes the weak are better dead than protected. We shield innocent’s; the weak who are unable to protect themselves.”

Silenced stretched beyond the realm of comfort, for comfort here no longer existed.

“Namikaze-san, we are ninja, we dwell inside a ninja village, as fellow Leaves we must operate in concert to ensure its survival. Moral sacrifice is an ugliness our profession often deems essential - you must remember we are a Dictatorship – not a Democracy.”

He remembered why he became a ninja, ‘I am a Guardian of the Innocent.’

Taking a calming breath the blond shinobi centered himself as steely blue met bemused black.

“You will take-up residence with me here inside Hokage Tower.” The Sixth was pushing his control.

“I refuse!”

“You do realize a simple hand-sign will end your Pink haired teammate’s existence.”

Naruto’s shoulders dropped in defeat.

Madara coveted smile reflected his pleasure, at said ninja’s defeat.

Sasuke observed the exchange in silence.

A worried Naruto drug his feet along the cobbled stone path walked in happiness as a child, a path walked in reverence upon the Third’s death, a path walked in pride once Tsunade took the mantle – now he walks this path – heart heavy, spirit weary. Sasuke out-in-front an ANBU Black Ops at each side, and two pulling up the rear; he gave the Shadow Leader begrudging respect never underestimate Namikaze Naruto. Three days had passed since hearing from Itachi which was his cause, for worry the days sped by in a blur of events, but he trusted Itachi to be in good health. Until learning otherwise following the plan was most sentient.

Halting, the young shinobi eyed his new home The Tower and resisted the urge to fight his escort, and new team, flee, and reclaim the village. He really wanted to believe all this was an illusion. He really wanted to believe there was another alternative to surrender, but Madaras’ strategic mind, planned for all possible outcomes, ensuring his triumph. A nudge against his lower back drew Naruto from his thoughts - stepping forward Team Shadow entered Hokage Tower.

Ascending three flights before the party exited, trekking along a simple corridor stopping before a beautiful wooden door. Sasuke bite his thumb, blood flowed smearing the red substance across the area where a knob would be a complex seal glowed yellow than receded. A release of air greeted their ears before the wood creaked - drifting ajar.

Crossing the threshold a wave of nostalgia hit the blond shinobi. His first two years of adolescence were spent surrounded by these very walls. His heart filled with warmth appealing to his fox companion pulling his lips taunt resisting the urge to yip, and growl simultaneously at the sight, for he knew Madara would change everything here as he would all else.

“You are to place your clothing, and essentials inside the main-bedroom.” Sasuke droned in robotic fashion as if reciting the Shinobi Codes of Conduct.

Naruto was beyond livid, how dare the elder Uchiha place him in such a precarious position. God, he did not want to think right now. This was bad extremely bad. Despite what most comrades considered he was far from idiotic, and knew Madara’s plans now observing his current predicament. The elder Uchiha knew he could carry. For the first time since childhood Naruto felt helpless.

Madara strolled Konoha’s streets toward his new living quarters, and wondered briefly if the Malestrom appreciated their sleeping arrangements. After-all, the love of his life died performing the sealing, and Naruto’s imitation…….he is every bit his fathers’ son. And that’s good enough for him.
