Here's to the Fox: Chapter 10

Sasuke looked up from the flames currently dancing in the fireplace as Naruto stepped into the Uchiha family room. It was the only room in the house that wasn’t very traditional, aside from the bedrooms. Sasuke sat on a plush couch of mahogany and navy velvet, white pillows thrown on for comfort and decoration.

There were china cabinets to either side of the fireplace across from the couch proudly displaying many ornate fans given to or collected by the main family of the Uchiha clan through the generations.

Fine crafted oak doors with starburst-glass paneling opened onto a patio that led to the garden, which hadn’t been properly tended to in fifteen years. Sasuke really couldn’t find it in him to care about plants and such, not when he had bigger problems on his hands.

He didn’t say anything to the Kyuubi-holder, so Naruto took it upon himself to sit down at the other end of the couch. They sat in silence for a while, just gazing at the flames, but embarrassment over his earlier outburst had Sasuke desperate to find a topic of discussion to get their minds off it, as that was surely what they were both thinking.

“Naruto, why does your name cause so much surprise?”

“What are you talking about?”

“It was just something I was thinking about the other day when we first got here. Kakashi told Tsunade your name, and she damn near freaked. And when we were in Reihi, Kakashi attacked you after you introduced yourself. But I don’t recall an Uzumaki clan ever being in Konoha, so what’s so special about your name?”

“So you caught on, ne? I’m sorry, Sasuke. I didn’t mean to keep it from you.” Naruto looked at him in sadness, but Sasuke couldn’t figure out why. “It’s not so much my name as my father. He was very loved around here, and not many people knew he had a son, much less a son carrying the Kyuubi.”

“Who was your father?”

The silence was broken only by the crackle of the fire before Naruto sighed and whispered, “Yondaime.”

Sasuke was speechless. He couldn’t believe that the son of the hero of Konoha was sitting on his couch! But then he realized that no matter who his father was, Naruto was still part demon now, and the village would never see past that. Here Sasuke was sitting in front of the man who should be Hokage with the knowledge that it would never happen.

“I’m sorry, Naruto.”

A sad smile was directed his way, and the two went back to their silent contemplation of the fire. It didn’t take long for Sasuke to start drifting off, and before he knew it, he was tumbling into unconsciousness.

“Kankuro wants to know why we had to drop everything we were doing in Suna to meet you in Konoha ahead of schedule.”

“Like Kankuro was doing anything important, the lazy ass.”

Sasuke drifted up through the layers of sleep until he was conscious of his surroundings. Feeling that he was not alone, he continued to feign sleep, wondering what was so important that Gaara had to visit Naruto this late at night. And what did he mean by “ahead of schedule”?

“There was a change of plans, and I was able to leave Reihi sooner than expected.”

“Apparently you left on the whim of Uchiha.” There was unmistakable venom lacing his name.

“I did no such thing. An opportunity arose, and I took it. Leave Sasuke out of this.”

“I just don’t think it’s a good idea to get anyone who doesn’t need to be involved.”

“But Sasuke is involved.”

“The only person in Konoha that needs to be involved is the man that will bring Akatsuki to us.”

“Gaara, you don’t understand! Things have changed!”

“In what way, Naruto? You have to tell us so we can alter our plans!”

“Gaara, it’s Sasuke!”

There was a moment of silence.

“What?”

“Sasuke is the brother of the man after us. And Akatsuki knew I was here the second I walked through the gates. They know you’re here as well. Any covert plan we were hoping to pull off is useless, so now we have to depend on this village.”

“Fuck that, Naruto. We need to leave!”

“But Akatsuki is here.”

“I’m less concerned about Akatsuki than what Tsunade will do once everything is settled.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Think, Naruto. If you fight with Konoha to defeat Akatsuki, there is no way they’re going to let you go. You are a powerful resource, as well as the son of Yondaime! They’ll do anything to keep you here, as far as using Uchiha against you!”

“That’s enough!” Sasuke rose from the couch, his fury outweighing all else. That Naruto had sought to use him was like a kunai through his heart.

He’d trusted Naruto! For the second time that night, Sasuke had been betrayed by the one person he cared about enough to show it, and he wasn’t going to take it laying down.

“Just go ahead and do what you have to, Naruto.” His voice was like ice, coating everything around him in layers of impenetrable cold.

“Sas-”

“There’s no way this village can do anything to me. They fear me. Don’t worry about me spoiling your plans.” Naruto was trying to say something, but Sasuke would have none of it. “Don’t say a fucking word, Uzumaki! How could you betray me like this? I should have known!”

“Sasuke!”

“This whole fucking village has done nothing but use me for the past fifteen years, I don’t see why a complete stranger should be any different! It’s not as if people here trust me, so go ahead and use me. Maybe I’ll die, and this village can go back to its peaceful existence and pretend the Uchiha clan never lived!”

“Sasuke, what the hell are you talk-”

“Of course they don’t trust you, Uchiha.” Sasuke swung his glare from Naruto to Gaara. “After you betrayed them by going to Orochimaru, what did you expect?”

Sasuke tensed. He never wanted to hear that name again, and here, a person he could certainly live happily never seeing again was saying it, tone making clear that he wished it was a poison he could plunge into the Uchiha’s veins. Sasuke’s fists clenched at his sides, and his eyes burned as the Sharingan turned his irises crimson.

“Gaara, you’d better leave.”

“I’m not scared of Uchiha or his Sharingan, Naruto.”

“He’s copied my speed, Gaara. I think you should go.”

Sasuke watched as the redhead turned to Naruto, and after a moment, he nodded and left, leveling one last glare Sasuke’s way before vanishing through the entryway.

“Okay, calm down, Sasuke. We can talk about this.”

“What’s to talk about, Uzumaki? I’ve already given you permission to feed me to the wolves.”

“Damn it, Sasuke, I’m not here to use you!”

“You could’ve fucking fooled me! I just listened to you tell Gaara that you were going to use me to lure out Itachi! Little did the two of you know that Itachi has been trying to get to me all my fucking life! You didn’t even need whatever elaborate plan the two of you came up with! All you needed to do was show up and watch the fucking fireworks!”

“I could never do that to you, Sasuke! You’re important to me!”

“Oh, come on, Naruto! Haven’t we already established tonight that I’m worthless? But here’s the perfect opportunity for me to do something useful. I’ll die. It’s so simple! Why in hell didn’t I think about it before? I’ll just die! You know, I almost did die once. I was all set to give my body to that snake-bastard. I would have died then, and I could’ve saved a lot of people some grief. Oh, but wait. Had I died then, I wouldn’t be here for you to use at your convenience!”

“Sasuke, you’re kind of scaring me now. Can you please calm down?”

“Calm down? Calm down? How the fuck can I calm down when the man I love wants me dead?!”

Sasuke froze after the utterance of those words, not registering that Naruto was cautiously approaching him. But when his arms tried to wrap themselves tentatively around him, Sasuke snapped out of his shock and struck out at Naruto.

His hand came into contact with Naruto’s cheek, and when the blonde stepped back in shock, Sasuke made his move to escape. But Naruto reached out his arm to wrap around the Uchiha’s waist and pulled him back. Sasuke went down, Naruto underneath him, and found himself struggling in the blonde’s lap. Naruto now had both his wrists in his hands, legs thrown over top of his own to keep Sasuke down. He felt Naruto lean into his back and stilled when he heard the blonde speak.

“Hush, little Sasuke, don’t say a word. Daddy’s gonna give you a summoning bird. And if that summoning bird doesn’t fight, daddy’s gonna buy you a sharp kunai. And if that sharp kunai doesn’t pierce, daddy will protect you, strong and fierce. Should daddy fall, no need to cry. You’ll be a strong ninja by and by…”

Sasuke hadn’t heard that sung to him since he was a child. He was suddenly filled with memories of his mother, and it was as if she were there, holding him and telling him that he was loved very much, and that his parents looked forward to the day he would be a strong shinobi like the other male members of the Uchiha clan.

Suddenly unable to hold his arms up, he let them fall to his side as he slumped against Naruto’s warm chest. The song died out as he calmed down, and all that was left was Naruto’s warm breath against his neck.

“Come on, Sasuke. You’ve had a long day. Let’s get you in bed.”

Sasuke numbly rose with Naruto and let the blonde guide him up the stairs. He still hadn’t come back to himself when they reached his room, and he stood and watched, as if from far away, while Naruto stripped him down to his boxers and gently settled him in bed.

Before the blonde could move after pulling the covers up, Sasuke’s hand shot out to grab onto Naruto’s pant leg.

“Yes, Sasuke?” Naruto’s voice was so soft and gentle, as if the Uchiha hadn’t just gone crazy ten minutes ago. Sasuke didn’t say anything, suddenly ashamed to be asking anything of his friend after the way he’d treated him. He turned his head away and let go of Naruto, hoping the other would just leave. But then there was a hand on his cheek, gently forcing his head back towards Naruto, and he grudgingly complied.

Dazzling blue eyes gazed into his own, and he noticed Naruto getting closer and closer. Then lips were on his in a gentle kiss, and he returned it shyly. But as Naruto began to move away, Sasuke’s hands shot up and anchored into soft, blonde hair. He crashed Naruto’s lips down on his fiercely, tongue caressing the blonde’s bottom lip, asking for entrance.

He felt added weight to the bed as Naruto brought one of his knees up to rest by his side. An arm brushed over his chest on its way to the other side so Naruto could lean over Sasuke. The blonde’s lips then opened, and Sasuke’s tongue plunged into that wonderful heat, playing forcefully with Naruto’s own tongue.

The two eventually broke apart for air, and when blue eyes looked deeply into black, Sasuke opened his mouth and whispered, “Stay.” Naruto’s reply was silent, but it spoke volumes as he lowered his body to the Uchiha’s side, arm still slung over his chest and head resting on his shoulder. Sasuke moved his arms to wrap around Naruto and gave a small sigh as he finally drifted off into the sleep of the righteously exhausted.

isn't that just so adorable? eh, whatevs. ^___^ heh heh, that lullaby was quite a stroke of inspiration. i really hadn't planned for that to happen. i was gonna have sasuke attack and injure naruto, then run away afraid of his actions and turbulent emotions. but this was a way to end the angst sooner, as some of my reviewers have said they're not too big on angst, so i just went this route.

i hope you all liked it! see you next installment!
