Chapter Thirteen
A/N: Okay… yeah. Um… so it’s been like… two months since I updated. Please don’t hurt me. I have a good excuse this time, I promise! Erm… well, there was Otakon. And then, I moved back into my dorm. And then, classes started again. And then… well, now I’m starting to sound like that creepy Chinese food lady from Dude, Where’s My Car?, so I’ll stop. But really, I’m under a lot of stress, because I lost my scholarship last year, and if I don’t pull my GPA up this semester, I’m going to be booted out of the Honors dorm. So, unfortunately, school has to take a priority over writing (GASP). Really, I’m not much for school… I’d probably drop out of college if my parents wouldn’t stab my eyes out with sporks over it. I’m just too lazy for all the work… which is why my grades are in the state they’re in. Apparently, to get good grades, you have actually study and… stuff. Go figure.
So… um… in exchange for such a long wait, I have… pics? From my Otakon cosplay, I was Itachi. If anyone’s interested, here’s a few links to some of the pics, which my girlfriend made into icons:

(There's been one person who said they didn't know how to get the pics to work... erm... just copy the links here and paste them into your browser, then hit enter.)
Yeah, my hair’s down in most of them… it was Sunday, and I was sick of pulling it back. If you’d like to see any more, just ask *pic whore*. We made some amusing OroIta pics when we got back to our hotel room, and at the con a very good Naruto and I made lots of ItaNaru. …Oh, and there’s a picture of me spanking a Sasuke. …Um… yeah.
Thus ends this hilariously long author’s note. Now that you’re all thoroughly annoyed, here’s the chapter.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Naruto. Duh.

Okay, so the thing in the hallway made me seem a little too ‘damsel in distress’-y, right? I thought so, too. I mean, I’m glad everyone wanted to help me, but I can take care of myself, okay? I’m serious. I don’t need anyone--especially not a certain bastard I know--coming to my rescue.
Not that it wasn’t nice. And stuff. I mean, I got this warm fuzzy feeling and everything. Like in movies. …Manly movies. Not those stupid chick flicks. ‘Cause… I totally don’t watch those. Ever. Really.
Shut up.

Naruto was especially cheerful as he walked proudly out of the front doors of the school. The rest of the day had gone by smoothly, and he’d made sure to make obscene gestures at every single person who’d been cruel to him. After all, now that they knew how awesome he was, they were too afraid to mess with him. Ah, it was nice to be so amazing.
He took the front steps two at a time, but nearly tripped when he heard a familiar voice.
“You look extraordinarily pleased with yourself.”
Sasuke was leaning against someone’s car--not even his own, the cocky bastard!--and smirking knowingly at Naruto, his hands shoved nonchalantly into his pockets. Stupid Sasuke, trying to be all cool. It was Naruto’s day, dammit!
“I am pleased with myself,” Naruto responded, stopping next to him and doing his best to step on the brunet’s foot. Sasuke responded by shifting closer and lifting one hand out of his pocket to rest it on the small of Naruto’s back.
“Why is that?”
“You don’t know?” Naruto pumped his fist into the air victoriously. “I scared every one of those assholes away! You saw it! They fear my awesome… um…”
“Sasuke, is Naruto trying to compensate for something?” Sakura asked as she joined them, holding her books to her chest and smiling prettily at them, green eyes amused as she watched the blond’s antics.
Sasuke frowned, fingers stroking Naruto’s side. “Unfortunately, I don’t know yet.”
All this talk was ruining Naruto’s good mood. In fact, he was turning an unusual shade of red. Couldn’t be healthy, really. “Hey! You… and you… augh!” He just couldn’t decide who to yell at first.
Sakura laughed and glanced at Sasuke, the more reasonable of the two boys. “So, about the project? Do you think it would be okay to go to your place again today? If you don’t mind driving us, that is.”
“Mm.”
The pink-haired girl assumed that meant ‘yes,’ but she wasn’t quite as good at deciphering Sasuke-speak as Naruto was. “Er… right. Where did you park?”
Their study session that day went surprisingly well, if a bit embarrassingly. Now that Sakura knew about the two of them, Sasuke no longer saw any need to hide his relationship with Naruto. And they’d been apart for a while, so he didn’t even bother to resist the urge to touch the blond any time he felt like it. This usually resulted in an annoyed and red-faced Naruto, and a blushing and giggling Sakura. Admittedly, Sakura did still feel a bit of pain, knowing that she could never be with Sasuke, but it was hard to be upset when she could see how happy her two friends were, even if neither of them was willing to admit it.
By the time Sakura was ready to leave, her parents outside honking as usual, the three of them had settled back into their friendly companionship. It was almost as if nothing had happened between them. Sakura gave a cheerful wave before walking out Sasuke’s front door, calling back to her two friends, “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!”
Naruto waved back, then wrinkled his nose when the door closed loudly. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“I think she’s trying to discourage me from molesting you,” Sasuke answered, walking into the kitchen to get a soda. Naruto huffed and followed after him.
“I can take care of myself! And you need to stop touching me in front of people, you know. And stop being so aggressive. I’m not the girl here.”
That comment earned him a scowl. Sasuke closed the refrigerator and opened his drink, straddling a bar stool. “Are you saying I am?”
The look on the blond’s face answered that question without words, and Sasuke’s scowl deepened. “Aww, don’t be like that,” Naruto said, moving closer and sliding a hand impishly up Sasuke’s thigh. The Uchiha smacked it away lightly, frowning, and Naruto grinned. “See? You’re pouting just like a girl.”
“Hn.”
“Are so.”
In one smooth motion, Sasuke yanked Naruto into his lap. Naruto was surprised, but didn’t protest, and set his hands on Sasuke’s shoulders. “Hey. I was thinking…”
Sasuke could see the seriousness in Naruto’s expression, and the sudden change in the blond’s tone made him pause. “Yeah?”
“…I wanna go visit my dad. I haven’t done it in a long time.”
“Alright.” Sasuke wasn’t sure how this involved him, but he knew he should be supportive about it. Naruto’s father couldn’t be a very good man, if what the other boy had said about him was true, but that didn’t mean Naruto shouldn’t go see him. Sasuke understood obligatory love very well. Loving someone who didn’t deserve it, simply because they were family and you couldn’t seem to do otherwise.
“And,” Naruto continued slowly, watching the Uchiha’s eyes to gauge his reaction, “I was hoping you’d come with me.”
Sasuke remained silent for a moment, and Naruto continued in a rush, quickly losing his nerve, “Just because, you know, even if he is an asshole and he’s in jail and everything, I want him to meet you, and I want you to meet him, and I don’t like going by myself anyway, but there’s no one to go with me, except you now, and…”
“Shut up,” Sasuke said after a few moments of Naruto’s rambling. The blond abruptly stopped speaking and glanced away.
“I was just asking…”
“I’ll do it.”
Naruto looked up, blinking wide blue eyes. “Huh?”
“I said I’ll do it. Are you deaf?”
“No…” That happy grin finally emerged, and Sasuke resisted the urge to smile back. “So you really will?”
He rolled his eyes. “Didn’t I just say that? Twice?“
“Great!” Sasuke suddenly found himself with his arms full of a very happy Naruto, and he finally allowed himself a small smile.

Sasuke stretched comfortably over the couch in their family’s large den, and tossed an arm over his eyes, tilting his head back. It had been a long, but very satisfying day. Naruto had left about an hour ago, and Sasuke had fixed himself something to eat before deciding to take his little break.
He sensed a presence in the room long before Itachi made himself known. Finally tired of waiting, Sasuke lowered his arm, opening his eyes to regard his brother.
“What?”
Itachi sat demurely in a chair across from the couch and watched his younger sibling for several moments before speaking. “You’re going with Naruto to visit his father.”
It wasn’t a question. How did he always know these things? Sasuke glanced away and shrugged. He noticed vaguely that the den was painted in a dark maroon, all the furniture colored to match. A dim lamp in the corner seemed to be desperately trying to light the room, but was fighting a losing battle. It was so dark, both literally and in feeling… why hadn’t he noticed before?
“…Yeah,” he finally said, when it appeared Itachi wasn’t going to say anything else. “So what?”
“So that’s probably not a good idea.”
Sasuke could feel his anger rising, and for once, he didn’t bother to contain it. “I’m getting really sick of this. I don’t know what your problem with Naruto is, and to be honest, I really don’t even want to know. But I’m with him, so get over it.”
Silence reigned for a long time after that, the room seeming unusually quiet after Sasuke’s loud outburst. He wondered if he’d actually shocked his brother, but Itachi’s next words proved that he hadn’t. The older Uchiha had simply been waiting for the right moment.
“Naruto’s father is the one who killed our family, Sasuke.”
All at once, the room was darker than before, and the deep color of the walls was like blood, dripping down and drowning Sasuke, who could do nothing more than stare at his brother in total shock.

A/N: Hehe, I'm so melodramatic. Oh, and before you jump all over me, please READ this author’s note. ^^; I realize that this chapter leaves a lot of unanswered questions. I said Sasuke only moved to the town a few years ago, how is it Naruto’s father killed his family? Why wouldn’t Sasuke already know who killed his family? OMG, how could I possibly characterize Naruto’s father like that, YONDAIME WOULDN’T KILL ANYONE!!11!one!!
All of these questions WILL be answered, so, while I love constructive criticism, just wait a bit and see what happens before you jump on this issue, okay? ^^ Anything else is, of course, welcome. Also, sorry for the shortness of the chapter, this was just, obviously, a good place to end it. Thanks for reading!
