Memories of the Future: Chapter 12 - Secret Revealed
_______________________________________

“Uzumaki?”

Naruto smiled at his old friend, and, forgetting about the ring of enemies around them, turned to the redhead.

“Gaara, oh my gods, it’s been so long! You don’t look a day over… whatever age you were when I died, though I didn’t really die, but that’s neither here nor there at the moment.” Naruto grinned and began to rub the back of his head. A movement to his right had him tensed for battle again, finally remembering the situation they were in. Naruto turned to face them once again.

“You will step out of the way so that we can kill the boy.”

Naruto scowled at them. “Not likely. I didn’t let you kill him sixteen years ago, I won’t let you now.”

Yes, Naruto remembered these men, from his memories and from Kyuubi’s. They were the chi masters that wished to take Kyuubi from him, that had killed him three times before. And now for some reason they were after his children, and Naruto wouldn’t stand for it, whether he had to die again or not.

He crouched down in a defensive position, waiting for them to attack. But before the enemy could move, waves of sand encompassed them, covering them completely before they constricted and painful screams could be heard from inside.

Naruto stood and eyed the piles of blood and sand distastefully before turning to make sure Kei was fine. The boy’s face was completely blank, and Naruto shook his head at how much the boy acted like the teme, completely blocking off all emotion when he should really let it out.

Head still hanging, Naruto peeked open an eye to find Gaara glaring at him, fiercely. That had to be the most emotion Naruto had seen on the redhead’s face since the time he’d gone nearly insane at the chuunin exam some, Naruto added in his head, twenty-six years ago. Too bad it was extreme anger over something that was apparently a huge misunderstanding.

Naruto lifted his head, grinning like the fool he was often accused of being. “Heh, thanks, Gaara. It seems you’ve gotten a lot stronger, to be able to do your sand coffin without moving, and on so many people at once.”

“Kai.”

Naruto’s jaw dropped at the deadpan dispel, not completely happy that Gaara would see him in a girl’s body. Because, of course he knew Gaara wouldn’t be fooled by anything. He’d know the truth without having to be told. Except, and Naruto’s face fell in a concerned frown as Gaara gazed upon Yuki’s body, Gaara had only known when Naruto was in close proximity because of Kyuubi and Shukaku’s presences within both of them. So, with Gaara thinking Naruto was dead, all he would know is that Kyuubi inhabited the body in front of him.

“Uzumaki.”

“Yeah?” Naruto automatically answered, his thought process broken like so much glass.

Gaara’s fiery glare turned glacial, and Naruto was almost afraid. But he’d never been scared of Gaara before, so he wasn’t going to start now. Okay, he’d been scared of Gaara when they’d first met, but he was insane back then, so it was acceptable. Just because the teme didn’t have a healthy fear of the redhead back during the chuunin exam did not mean that Naruto was, by any means, a coward.

“Oto-san…”

Naruto looked over at Kei. “What? I wasn’t scared!”

“I wasn’t going to say that. Uncle Gaara was asking you a question.”

Naruto blinked and turned to Gaara, finally noticing that Kankuro was standing behind the Kazekage. “Oh, you were saying?”

Gaara stared at him for a moment then turned to Kankuro, a silent exchange happening between them. Then he turned his chilly eyes back to Naruto. “If you really are Uzumaki, tell me how I defeated you the first time we fought.”

“Well, technically, I’m an Uchiha, but… What!” Naruto squawked indignantly. “I so beat your ass, you damn raccoon! And if the teme hadn’t have gotten in my way, I would have finished the damn job! Want me to do it now? Come on!” Naruto started for Gaara, but Kei tried to hold him back, able to do so because he was only a petite girl.

“That is, I believe, the correct reaction, ne, Gaara?” Kankuro laughed.

“I sense Kyuubi within this girl, though why I’ve never noticed before is disconcerting. And now to find Uzumaki in her as well…”

“Okay, there’s an explanation for that, you guys,” Naruto nervously laughed. The look on their faces told Naruto that they fully expected one, but a horde of Konoha ninja decided to drop in on them. Hyuuga and his team were first to appear, and Naruto used an extreme amount of willpower not to laugh at his still-green hair.

Neji spotted their little group right away, eyeing the lumps of blood-drenched sand before he stepped cautiously to them. “Uchiha, report.”

Kei snapped to attention. “Sir, enemy ninja surrounded us, their purpose to kill me. Yuki-san prepared to defend, but the Kazekage appeared and used his sand coffin jutsu to kill them.”

“They weren’t ninja,” Naruto supplied helpfully, smiling at the Hyuuga. Neji eyed him questioningly before turning back to the sand-covered bodies.

“That’s perfect. There’s no one left to question. Just who the hell were they? And why would they want to kill Uchiha?”

A masked ANBU came up beside Neji. “Sir, perhaps they were after Uchiha because he is the son of the Hokage.”

Naruto snorted. The masked ANBU ripped her mask off and stepped towards him. “You have something to say, you murdering little tramp?” Naruto stared in shock at the woman. Suddenly he remembered his first trip to Sasuke’s office, when that woman ANBU had tripped him. Was this the same woman? And why was she so angry and cruel?

“Enough!” Neji pulled her back and pinned her with an icy glare. “You are to report to the Hokage that the threat has been neutralized.”

The woman glared a bit more at her captain before she nodded with a crisp ‘Sir’ to Neji and disappeared. The Hyuuga sighed and turned to Naruto, bowing before him. “I apologize for her rude behavior. Could you please tell me why you think they weren’t enemy ninja?”

Naruto shrugged, but he knew he’d be asking questions of someone about that woman’s behavior later. ‘Murdering’ he could understand, as Kakashi had explained. But ‘tramp?’ That was a new one.

“They’re chi masters, either the same ones or associated with the ones that attacked Konoha sixteen years ago. They are in need of chakra, and so they seek out those with strong bloodlines, and Uchiha blood, combined with Uzumaki blood that undoubtedly was affected by Kyuubi, would be the best they could get. Their goal is to kill the Uchiha children to steal their chakra.”

Neji blinked at him, probably trying to decide whether to believe him or ask how in hell he could possibly know any of that. But he just closed his eyes in exasperation and slumped slightly. “You always have been a mystery, Yuki-san.” He sighed. “Please return to the Uchiha mansion with Kei-kun and await the arrival of the Hokage.” He turned to Gaara and his brother. “Please follow me to the Nara household. I’m afraid this incident, after having to deal with all those pranks, will have the Hokage in a bad temper to meet with you, Kazekage-sama.”

Gaara nodded, but turned to Naruto before he could leave, giving him a questioning look that only Naruto could perceive. “I wish to speak with you at length,” he paused, seeming to think before proceeding, “Yuki-san.”

Naruto gave a small bow in reply and watched as the three of them moved away. He and Kei shared an exhausted smile before they, too, headed for home. But Naruto was still troubled by that woman ANBU that had ripped into Yuki. What the hell had that been about?

The house was as quiet as it always was before the whole family was home, and just as brightly lit, which still surprised Naruto just as it had when he’d first arrived in the future. To think that Sasuke was so very depressed but still allowed the sun to shine throughout his house.

“Kei, why did that ANBU yell at me like that? I mean, I didn’t mean to snort like that, but I’m so used to doing it to Sasuke that it just kind of slipped.”

“You’ll have to excuse her, Oto-san. She, well, did you happen to wonder why Oto-sama never remarried?”

Naruto looked at his son blandly. “I was kind of hoping it was because he could love no other than me, like he pledged the day he married me, like he pledged so many days after and before.”

Kei blushed a bit and laughed nervously. “Yes, well, yeah, that is the actual reason. But it’s also because any woman that would try to get close to Oto-sama would be scared away by that woman. She has an unhealthy obsession with him, and that’s why she’s on Neji-taicho’s team, so that Neji-taicho can keep an eye on her.

“Well, anyway, Yuki has been the only woman that’s gotten near enough to Oto-sama to piss her off. So she tries to make Yuki look bad whenever she can.”

Naruto blinked then slammed his fist into his palm thoughtfully. “So that’s why she tripped me when I first got to Sasuke’s office.”

Kei sighed. “Yes, she’s convinced herself that you’re only around Oto-sama to get into his pants or something, which is just too nasty for me to even think about.” He shivered in distaste.

“What’s too nasty to think about?”

“Oto-sama having sex.” Kei shivered again.

Naruto’s lips stretched into a devilish grin. “Oh, ho, it sounds like I’ll have to tell you about the time your father hung me from the rafter in the bedroom-”

Kei threw his hands over his ears for the second time that day. “I’m not listening!”

Naruto laughed to himself, blushing at the memory of that night, him swinging from the chains, pushing himself down onto Sasuke stiff dick over and over again, only allowed to use his legs to move himself as Sasuke’s tongue made him squirm as it traveled over his sensitive flesh.

His breath was coming faster, and Naruto stopped the memory before it caused trouble. He didn’t know the first thing about getting a woman off, and he didn’t want to learn. That was just… Naruto shivered in distaste.

He made to move to the kitchen to get ready for dinner, or lunch, whatever, but banging on the front door halted him. Kei ran to answer it, and a flushed Sakura leaned into the entryway.

“Sakura-baa-chan, what’s wrong?” Kei asked worriedly.

“Nothing, really, I just… have been using… too much chakra… today.” She huffed a bit more as Naruto made his way back to Kei’s side. Then she took one big breath and straightened. “Hokage-sama wishes for both of you to come to his office so he can question you about today’s events.”

Naruto and Kei nodded and moved out into the sun to join Sakura. The pink haired medic looked them over and moved to make the signs for the transportation jutsu. But then she fixed her eyes on Naruto again and sighed.

“Guess we’ll have to go on foot since Yuki hasn’t learned the transportation jutsu yet.”

Naruto scowled at her. Yes, Yuki was a chuunin, but this chuunin was given special privilege to escort the fucking Hokage in place of an ANBU squad, so he thought he ought to be able to use the transportation jutsu regardless of rank, and no one was going to tell him that Kyuubi didn’t know the damn jutsu anyway. So he brought his hands together quickly to form the signs and disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Naruto appeared in the middle of the Hokage’s office, amidst the Sand shinobi and ANBU, as well as Kakashi.

There was silence at his appearance, and then Kakashi cleared his throat. “Yes, well, Yuki, you were asked to come here, but people with manners don’t just pop in unannounced.”

Naruto stared at Kakashi blandly. “Look who’s talking. At least I have punctuality in my corner.” Naruto stared down Kakashi, but an ill-concealed snicker caused them both to turn their eyes to the Hokage.

“Ah, she’s got you there, Kakashi,” Sasuke remarked. “But please, Yuki-san, just how did you learn that jutsu anyway?”

Naruto blinked innocently, hoping he could get away with not answering. A dark eyebrow was quirked in response. He batted his eyelashes, and the brow drew down into a slight scowl.

Two puffs of smoke saved him from saying anything, and Sakura and Kei were added to the growing crowd in the office. The kunoichi walked over, her lips curved into a forced grin as she stopped beside Naruto. Her fist went up and came down on Naruto’s head. Scenes flashed through his head of Sakura doing that many times before – usually when he’d tried to get a date out of her or when he’d made fun of Sasuke – until the pain of the hit finally registered.

Naruto grabbed his head and squatted in pain. “Ow! Dammit, Sakura! I didn’t even say anything about the bastard!” he cried on reflex.

Another unsettling silence fell in the office, and Naruto froze in his place. He could feel eyes burning into his very flesh from every corner of the room, though Naruto knew Kei, Kakashi, Kankuro, and Gaara already knew his identity.

“Yuki-san, you’ve been acting very strange today,” remarked Neji, his white eyes squinted in scrutiny.

The woman from earlier stepped up to her captain as Naruto straightened up from his position near the floor. “Maybe because she’s an imposter. She might be one of those ‘chi masters’ or whatever the hell she called them.”

“If that were the case,” Sasuke began, but he was unable to finish as the woman drew a kunai and leapt at Naruto.

“I’ll find out for you, Hokage-sama!” She lunged at him, but Naruto knew he could easily dodge it. He tried to step to the side, but his head swam from the movement, still throbbing from Sakura’s hit, and he swooned.

Naruto’s eyes widened as he realized she’d score before he could dodge, but then they filled with horror when Kei jumped in front of him, only able to take the hit for him at such a close range. Naruto couldn’t stand the thought of anything harming his son, so as he fell, his arms came up and wrapped around Kei’s neck. Naruto twisted his body as they both fell, his back coming up to protect Kei.

His vision was red-hazed as a burning pain shot up his spine from the kunai embedded in his back. He heard Sakura screaming for people to move away from him so she could tend to his wound, and Sasuke’s voice boomed over the din for someone to restrain the woman ANBU.

Naruto felt Sakura’s healing chakra try to leak into his wound, but a sudden flood of Kyuubi’s chakra repelled her, and she flew across the room, caught in the arms of Touya.

Everyone stared at Naruto as the red chakra flowed over his body, draining into the hole in his back, shocked gasps filling the air as the wound proceeded to heal itself, not even leaving a scar.

He looked up into Kei’s frightened face, the boy’s skin pale and his lips quivering, and Naruto smiled. He stiffly climbed to his feet, stretching to get the kink out of his back before turning to face those gathered and stunned on the other side of the room.

“I knew she was a monster!” The restrained woman tried to get out of the grip of her former teammates. “She’s here to kill Hokage-sama!”

“Quiet, mortal fool,” Naruto spat, his eyes red and pupils slit. His anger at his child being in danger had yet to fade, and he was afraid that if the woman went on as she was, he’d do something he’d regret later.

Neji activated his Byakugan, and Naruto’s eyes riveted on him, wary of the limit being used while he was in ‘fox-mode.’ A look of intense concentration appeared on the Hyuuga’s face, and Naruto wondered if the man would see him or the Kyuubi in his investigation of his chakra flow.

The Byakugan receded as his eyes widened in shock. “It’s the Kyuubi.”

Naruto inwardly groaned, watching as Gaara closed his eyes and Kakashi let his head fall into his hands. He felt Kei move behind him and tug on his shirt, and Naruto’s anger faded enough that he could get the rampant chakra under control and return to its natural flow. Well, his chakra flow anyway.

He slumped as that massive chakra ebbed away, too tired to continue to be bothered by the looks he was receiving. But then something shattered, and his and everyone else’s focus was drawn to Sasuke behind his desk.

His pale face was stricken, and his hands shook where they were balled atop the desk. “How the fuck is this possible? Who the hell are you?” he screamed at Naruto.

And Naruto laughed as the tired tears began to fall down his face.
