A/N: Sorry it took a little longer for this chapter. I’ve been working out the new arc. Like I said, last chapter was the end of the ‘Infiltrating Akatsuki’ arc. This chapter jumps about two years ahead (hee!) and marks the beginning of the ‘Journey to Konoha’ arc. I hope it continues to entertain. :)
A very grateful ‘thank you’ to all my reviewers. I’m very, very happy that you are enjoying the story. I’m going to give individual comments at the end, ‘cause people (hopefully) want to read the story more than listen to me blather.
Chapter Thirteen: Abandoned
This gift that has been given to you, the gift of sorcery, it is a gift that elevates you. In so doing it binds you to mercy and charity toward all other men and women. Why were we given this gift if not to heal, to promote kindness and mercy, and to assist in times of crises and need? Therefore be kind! Be just! Hold not yourself above others for they have other gifts, gifts of spirit that you cannot imagine! Forgive all but those who are truly sinful. Those that forcibly take from another, be it possessions, bodies, or lives. Those that defile themselves by lying with slaves or animals. Those that willfully ally themselves with spirits, ifrits, and demons. These shall not be forgiven, even unto to end of days. All others but these are as precious and beloved of the gods as you, therefore cherish them. For they will teach you compassion, and power without compassion is anathema to sorcery.

521 After The Disaster
Suien paused before the solid metal door visibly gathering his courage. Someone had to go in and give the kids their midday meals, and today Suien had drawn the short straw. Back when One and Nine shared a room they had been taken back to it for meals, but when Nine turned five they’d been separated and their individual training had been ramped up. Now each had breakfast and dinner alone and lunch was delivered by one of the Jounin-level guards.
When they’d been together most of the time, the two boys seemed to complement each other. One calmed Nine down and Nine drew One out, made One more open to people. But Nine was very protective of One, to the point where One’s teacher, Yashamaru, for whom Nine had conceived a strange dislike, had petitioned the Boss, Touji-sama, to separate them.
Suien thought it was a bad decision. Nine had yelled and cried and thrown a tantrum. One had withdrawn completely and become even more introverted than before. Himawari, Nine’s teacher, had protested the separation but the Boss thought Nine wasn’t progressing very quickly at all and so felt that Himawari’s views were indulgent.
Plus, as everyone knew, the Boss was bonking Yashamaru.
Nine was, to put it bluntly, mostly incompetent, but at least everyone thought he was sweet and harmless and kind of fun. One was different. He rarely spoke to anyone anymore. He just watched with those bruised and sad aqua eyes. There was a rumor around the guardroom that One’s silence was due to the boy getting nuttier by the minute. Yashamaru was widely considered a masochist or a saint.
Suien wasn’t so sure. The soft-spoken man always seemed too calculating, frankly, and he had to wonder if isolating One was really the best thing for the kid. One always looked a little lost, and although Suien thought Nine’s brash personality was off-putting at best, at least the other boy obviously cared for his ‘little brother’. Still, even he had to admit that One’s overly extreme introversion was kinda creepy.
Creepy or not, he was a Jounin class ninja of Hidden Waterfall. No six-year-old was going to stop him from doing the job he was getting paid an obscene amount of money to do. And in this case, the job was to walk through this door and deliver lunch, so...
One was sitting at the top of a climbing wall. He was still, very still, with only the movement of his huge blue-green eyes indicating that he was tracking Suien’s every step. The dark shadows around One’s eyes seemed more prominent than usual today.
Kid needs a nap. He looks like shit.
Suien took the food tray to the small table where One ate and studied non-physical things like languages and strategy. He left the meal there and turned to leave, offering the silent child a weak, uncomfortable smile. As he neared the door again, his foot came down on something squishy and soft and he stumbled forward.
Faster then he could blink, ropes of sand shot forward. His heart jumped as they wrapped around his waist, arresting his fall. His reflexes kicked in and he struggled against the binding grains until he realized that they weren’t hurting him, just steadying him. He looked down and saw what had tripped him - a sad, ragged stuffed bear lying awkwardly on the ground near his feet.
Once his feet were underneath him again and he’d regained his balance, the sand withdrew, slithering back toward the quiet boy perched on the wall. Another sand-rope looped around the toy, drawing it back into One’s hands. His face never changed expressions, but Suien thought One’s eyes seemed lonely and shy. He wondered how much of One’s reticence was due to a simple lack of ability to communicate with anything other than sand.
“Um...thanks?” Suien said, uncertainly, and the child looked startled. He clutched his bear tightly, blinking at the guard for a long moment and then gave a slow, grave nod.
Suien nodded back and left.
As the door hissed shut behind him, Suien leaned against the wall, his legs shaking. For a split-second, as those tendrils of sand wound around him, he’d seen his death approaching. The kid was fast, faster than Suien had thought, faster than he thought anyone else knew. And even though One had obviously been trying to be helpful, Suien knew that if he were running this project, the security recording of that little display would definitely cause a reevaluation of One’s threat level.
Suien felt a little sorry for the kid, as creepy as he was. Something was going to change soon. The older these kids got, the more obvious it was that they were monsters. And Suien had no doubt that the higher-ups in Akatsuki would stop at nothing to make sure that these monsters were firmly yoked to the organization’s will.
Shivering a little, Suien went to see about resigning. He had a hunch that things were going to get too hot for a Waterfall nuke-nin to handle. It was about time to move on. He had plans - plans to return to his village and take over, plans to get his hands on the Hero Water. Grand plans.
His plans didn’t include sticking around for Akatsuki’s inevitable attempt to muzzle its creatures.
When that happens, people are going to die.
Sorry, kid. he thought, regretfully.
You’re on your own.

Yuura stretched languidly, enjoying the soreness of pleasure-strained muscles. His lover had been unusually fierce today, taking Yuura roughly and for a long time before finding his own release. The deep, musky scent of sex permeated the small antechamber warmed by the heat of the desert sun. Even in winter the sun was strong and thick glass kept the cooler wind out, only permitting the sunlight entry.
Standing nude next to the window, the Yondaime Kazekage gazed out at the village that spread out around them, wisps of sand partially obscuring the view. Yuura let his eyes wander appreciatively over his lover’s body, but sat up apprehensively upon catching the look on the Kazekage’s face.
The Kazekage looked defeated.
“My Lord...?” Yuura asked, shocked.
“Gaara’s stability is decreasing.” His leader said quietly. “According to Yashamaru, the child’s control over Shukaku is minimal. He’s attacking anyone who comes into his training room and Yashamaru has to be with him at all times.” He sighed. “Gaara caries the demon that once brought the entire world to Disaster. If he cannot control it, how can I let him come back to Suna?”
Yuura hesitated. This was a sticky subject between them.
“My Lord...” he said diffidently, “I mean no disrespect to Yashamaru-sama, but...”
“Don’t.” The Kazekage cut him off. “Yashamaru has been everything to my son since he was born. Gaara is the child of his beloved sister and the only thing he has left of her. He would never cause Gaara, or this village, harm.”
“My Lord, Yashamaru-sama and your wife traced their bloodline back to the sorcerers of old, back to Ainu himself.” Yuura said stubbornly. “Your wife hated the idea of imbuing Shukaku into her child, especially while the child was still in her body. I just have to wonder if Yashamaru is...”
“She understood the necessity.” His lover said curtly. “They both did. Suna needs the power of a Tailed beast, or else all our clients will end up switching to Konoha. Wind Country cannot continue at the military level we’re at now and still retain our position as one of the Five Great Nations.”
“It was a necessary sacrifice for the village.”
“I know, My Lord.” Yuura said quickly. The Kazekage carried an intense guilt for his wife’s death bearing a child that carried a demon. “She was a proud Suna shinobi. We all stand ready to sacrifice for our country. That has never been, and will never be, in doubt.”
The Kazekage closed his eyes. “Thank you.”
He turned around and came back to the bed, crawling in next to Yuura and closing his eyes again as he laid back against the pillows.
“Then...what will you do?” Yuura asked quietly.
The Kazekage covered his eyes with one arm.
“I sent the message earlier this morning.” he said thickly. “I cannot sacrifice this village for my son and I’d prefer not to sacrifice my son for the village...although it may yet become necessary.”
His voice became even rougher and his muscles tightened as though anticipating a blow.
“Gaara,” he said softly, “is to be Collared before he’s brought back.”
Yuura opened his mouth and then closed it. There was nothing he could say that his lover hadn’t already taken into account, he was sure of it. And his beloved, his lover, his Kazekage was tense with spiritual agony. He would not add to it.
Wordlessly he moved to cover the older man’s body with his own, offering as much comfort as he could. And when comfort turned to angry passion, he took his lover’s pain without complaint and hoped it brought some measure of peace.

Yashamaru knelt in front of the small shrine in his living quarters inside the Akatsuki headquarters. He flicked a lighter and lit a small twist of incense, watching the small flame burn in front of the picture of his sister. The fragrant herbs were wrapped in the missive he’d received from his Kazekage that morning, a disguise for the cameras he knew were always watching.
Soon, Nee-sama. He prayed. Soon.
Soon the village that sacrificed you will know despair.
Soon the man that violated and betrayed you will know pain.
Soon the abomination that killed you will die, alone and unloved.
He pressed a trembling kiss to the photograph.
Soon, Nee-sama, you will be revenged.

starlight_dragon - oh, that reveal is going to be fun. There’ll be hints here and there, but when the penny drops, it’ll be priceless. It will happen later in this arc, I promise.
24CaratCoal - I’m especially glad that the ‘twist’ was successful. I kept thinking I was dropping way too many hints. :) As for the yaoi...I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the story so far, but I feel it only fair to warn you that there will be more yaoi in this arc than in the last, and I hope it doesn’t drive you away from the story. In the next major arc there will be yaoi, yuri, and het, so stick around!
