Chapter 13
A/N || And this is where you shall all hate me. Bahaha....Read on.
A whine stopped them in their tracks. Sasuke bit out a curse and pulled himself off of Naruto to walk towards the nursery. When he got to the door, he noticed Aito sitting up and making grabby hands at the empty cradle. Sasuke's sudden agitation dissipated into nothingness and he walked into the room, picking Aito up and holding her. She continued making grabby hands at the cradle but when Sasuke didn't move closer, she sniffed and started crying. Sasuke rubbed the top of her head and swayed gently. Aito let her head fall against her father's shoulder but continued to cry.
Sasuke sighed and turned towards the door. Right into Naruto. With a muttered curse, Sasuke took a step back and looked at Naruto who was staring to Aito. Naruto picked Aito from Sasuke's hands and brought her back to the cribs. He brought her right to the one she was making grabby hands at. When he set her down, she laid down and rolled onto her stomach, eyes closing slowly. Naruto pat her back gently, making small circles until she went to sleep. He stood there for a moment and watched the toddler sleep efore turning to Sasuke, hands moving to rub his wrists. Taking that moment to look down, Sasuke notcied the feint scars there and frowned. How had he gotten those?
"I'll stay here tonight." Naruto moved back to the bed he'd made on the floor and crawled under the top blanket. His head rested on the single pillow, back to Sasuke. Frown deepening, Sasuke walked back to his room, grabbed up a pillow and blanket, then walked back to the nursery. The Uchiha set the pillow next to Naruto's and just added the blanket to the one already there before crawling under. Naruto stiffened when Sasuke pulled their bodies flush together but relaxed after a while. Sasuke wasn't trying to back stab him. Wasn't trying to hurt him in any way. Just sleeping. Or trying too. Blue eyes closing slowly, Naruto took on last look up at the occupied crib and finally let himself fall asleep.
When Naruto's breathing evened out, Sasuke let out a small breath and stared at the blond head in front of him. Not exactly what he wanted to be doing but it seemed Naruto was still having second thoughts. Or something like that. Not daring to close his eyes again that night, Sasuke just pulled Naruto's sleeping form closer to him. He winced inwardly when Naruto mumbled something that sounded like Sai's name but just settled back down.
Naruto had left without Sasuke and Aito noticing. He wondered how that was possible since he could have swore he was only sleeping for an hour or so. But when Sasuke woke, the blond was gone. Now, it was bath time and Aito was back to the not crying or really anything stage. After the bath, Sasuke was going to talk to Tsunade. Something was wrong with his daughter and he himself didn't know what it was. There was nothing on it in the books he'd bought -or was given- so he was utterly clueless. Not that he wanted to admit it.
After the bath was over, Sasuke put Aito in a pink jumpsuit with the Uchiha fan on the back. It was a gift from Sakura yesterday. It wasn't something Sasuke liked but, somehow, it fit his daughter. Just the whole...pink part of it was a little much for the hard core black and blue shinobi to swallow.
Slipping Aito into a sling and putting his shoulders through the sling straps, Sasuke grabbed the small diaper bag and headed out. Never, in all his life, did Sasuke think he would be the one carrying a child around. He never thought he would have children actually. He hadn't planned on it. A few of the villagers stopped to look at him, wave or give him dirty looks. No, not everyone was happy he was back but there was nothing he could do about that now. Walking up the seemingly endless amount of stairs, Sasuke waited to be announced and when he was called in, he noticed Tsunade staring at a bunch of maps.
"What brat?" Sasuke quirked a brow. Wasn't that Naruto's nickname? She didn't even look up.
"Something is wrong with Aito." She looked up then.
"Nani?" Sasuke explained why he thought something was wrong and she just nodded every now and then. When she stood up suddenly, Sasuke went defensive and took a step back. Force of habit. "Sit." He moved towards the chair and pulled Aito around to the front of his body before sitting. Tsunade took the toddler and looked at her. Said toddler didn't react at all.
"See what I mean?"
"Normally she's crying and screaming to get away from me."
"Well, you do tend to give her needles when you take a hold of her. I know I would be screaming to get away if it were me." Tsunade sent him a sharp glare and he just shrugged.
"How does she react with Naruto around?"
"Just like he is her other father." Tsunade nodded at that. She had noticed. Everyone had.
"Separation disorder." Sasuke frowned at the two words and she explained. "She has a twin who is no longer in the crib next to her. She feels Naruto is her other father and now he is gone as well. It's a form of separation disorder." Handing the baby back to Sasuke, Tsunade called in Shizune.
"Hai Hokage-sama?"
"Put in a recall for Naruto. It is more imperative that he be here then on the search team."
"But Hokage-sama, he left before the team this morning. He was the first one on the scene." She looked up.
"Get him back here Shizune. Now." The look in her eyes had her assistant nodding and all but running from the room. Tsunade sat down and rubbed the bridge of her nose. "Does she react like this whenever Naruto leaves?"
"Every time."
"It looks like he's going to have to move back in."
"No." She looked up to see Sasuke shaking his head.
"Why not?" Sasuke looked at her.
"Who in this village can deal with Naruto in large doses?" She seemed to think about that but just smiled evilly at him.
"You."
"No."
"Well, if you're going to try and get into his pants, may as well be when he's living with you ne?" Sasuke had the graciousness to look away at that. "Not so secret huh?" She shook her head. "Get out of here. Naruto will be back sometime tonight. Until then, try and keep her asleep. It will help." He just nodded and left.
Moving again. How many times, how many lairs and how many close encounters were they going to go through before Konoha stopped searching? Did the child mean that much to them that she needed to be retrieved? Orochimaru sat in a tree, chakra completely concealed and masked, and he watched the retreating backs of the Konoha shinobi. They hadn't actually found this lair but they knew it was there. How? There was no possible way they could keep finding his very well and secret places of residence but it seemed he'd been proven wrong time and time again.
It had to be the traitor. Well, the female one. Orochimaru smiled. She was dead though so there was no way she was giving them anymore information. Unless...his smile turned into a frown and he jumped from his perch to enter his lair. Unless she had hidden information away. Or she somehow managed to tell someone before she died. Well, he'd had that thought more than once but with the spy's he had hidden in Konoha, he knew she was dead. Burned and burried.
"Kabuto!" A white head appeared next to him as he continued walking.
"Hai Orochimaru-sama?"
"We're leaving."
"Hai." When his right hand dissipated from his side, he took a right at the end of the hall, avoiding the traps there, and walked right into the small room where his prized possession was held. She was sitting on the floor, stuffed snake in her grasp. There was a real snake off to the side, watching her intently. After whispering to it, the snake came to him, slithered up his leg and melted back into his skin. Hikime looked up. Her hands visibly tightened on the stuffed snake but she made no sound. As always.
When he bent down, she handed him the stuffed toy, her eyes staring at her feet. He plucked it from her grasp and with his other hand, picked her up. She may have been only a year old but there was knowledge there, in her little mind. Understanding. Yes, she would make an excellent candidate for a transfer. He just had to wait seven more years and make sure he had enough qualified bodies for that time.
With the compound empty, he watched it as it exploded. If anyone was in there, oh well. They should have headed the warning. And on they moved.
His shoulder was killing him. His legs were killing him and his body's other inhabitant was actually complaining. He wasn't doing anything to stop the pain, heal the injuries or make him feel any better but he was giving Naruto a major headache. It wasn't so unusual, in the last few years anyway, for him and the fox to have a conversation that was mildly pleasant. And it was becoming more usual to hear his incessant whining about being caged, having to constantly fix up naruto when he was stupid and ran head long into danger and other things that were overly repetitive and annoying.
Naruto suddenly realized how annoying he'd been as a kid. Or, if it was anywhere near as bad as Kyuubi, he had a very good feeling. Now, he was walking through the all-familiar gates that symbolized the one place he'd rather not be. Konoha. Yes, he did love this place and yes, he would die to protect it but...he still didn't want to be here sometimes. And he was suddenly agitated. Why had he been called back? What was so urgent that he had to come rushing back right when they'd found another lair? Shaking his head, Naruto looked over to Genma and Kotetsu. They waved and he waved back, plastering a fake smile on his face.
Ignoring the call of ramen, and his stomach, he walked straight to the Hokage tower and waited to be called in. It seemed he wasn't the only one there that night. After waiting for what seemed like forever, he was finally let inside to see Tsunade holding a cup in her hands, Jiraya in the corner by the window and Shizune heading into her own office with a bunch of papers, maps and what looked like scrolls. Shaking his head, he looked at the other blond and waited. And waited. And waited. And finally, when he thought about turning around and leaving, She tossed something at him.
Catching it from the air, naruto looked down to notice a scroll. His hands moved quickly as he removed the seal and started reading. He knew his face fell into complete nothingness. Calm. Emotionless calm. Fire jutsu wasn't his strong point, in fact, he had a lot of trouble with it, but he could manage small things so, after burning the scroll, he turned and started back for the door. Without a word having been said. By anyone.
The nighttime seemed to swirl around him as he shoved his hands into his pockets and look to the sky. The city was winding down, shops closing, merchants packing up, shinobi getting off duty. Since it was still early enough that he could get by on his own for a while, he headed for the ramen stand. At least one thing could make him feel better.
"Oye! Naruto-chan!"
"Jii-san, gimme some beef ramen with eggs."
"Coming right up!" His stomach agreeing with his choice whole heartedly, he picked up some chopsticks and broke them apart.
"Itedakimasu!!" And not two seconds later he was digging into the ramen set in front of him. "Mmmm....Another!"
Five bowels later, Naruto was contemplating some pork ramen when a presence next to him froze him. Utterly. His body was tense, waiting. When his ramen was set in front of him, a warning look to the old man had him stopping what he was about to say and running to the back of the small stand. He watched, in utter amazement, as his bowel was taken by a pale hand and chop-sticks were grabbed from the container atop the counter. A muttered voice and some seconds later, the person next to him was eating his ramen.
Now, Naruto believed, whole heartedly, that evil people simply did not eat ramen. They didn't enjoy it so they didn't eat it. The person next to him was sitting there, eating beef ramen. His beef ramen. There wasn't a sound aside from the occasional slurp and Naruto stared, in an almost abstract horror, as the bowel was tipped up and emptied of it's broth. When the empty bowel was set aside, he was left staring at swirling red. It was hard to see but his blue eyes pinpointed it instantly.
"Uzumaki."
"Uchiha Itatchi."
A whine stopped them in their tracks. Sasuke bit out a curse and pulled himself off of Naruto to walk towards the nursery.
