Of Friends Who Care: He Whom Protects The Child

It was almost four-thirty when the door to Tsunade's personal medical office slammed open. Everyone looked at a heavily panting Neji who's Bayakugen was activated. He was dressed only in a pair of long, black pants and a white t-shirt. He looked around the small waiting room, seeing Shikamaru dressed in his pajamas as well, a red-eyed Temari sitting beside him on the floor dressed only a long, black night-shirt, obviously nothing beneath it either as she kept her legs closed and crossed. Leaning against the wall was silent Kiba, dressed in just a pair of black boxers and a black 'wife beater' shirt, while Shino, equally silent was standing beside his teammate and best friend. Akamaru was laying sadly beside him. Resting beside Akamaru was Ino who was wearing a pair of light purple short-shorts and a pink, sleeveless pajama top. Her long, blonde hair was hanging wildly down her back, her bangs shadowing her eyes. He didn't miss the tears slowly cascading down her face. Chouji, wearing a simple pair of red pajams, put his arm around Ino, pulling her head to his chest as she cried.

"Neji-Kun...!"

He looked at TenTen suddenly running his way, dressed in a small, white night-shirt. She wrapped her arms around him and cried heavily.

"Hinata-Chan...she's in surgery right now..."

"SURGERY?!" Neji asked, completely enraged.

He almost tore away from TenTen and into the operating room down the hallway until he saw Sasuke walking towards him. The Uchiha boy's eyes were slightly red, but whether it was from lack of sleep or tears, he wasn't sure. He was dressed in his pajamas just as everyone else was, however his was a long-sleeve night shirt and a pair of dark-blue pajama pants.

"Calm down. All this fussing won't help anything."

"Goddammit, Uchiha, that's my cousin...!"

"And they're trying to save my godson inside of the wife of my best friend!" Sasuke glared at Neji.

Neji sighed, deactivating his Byakugen. His eyes returned to normal as all was silent once more.

"Where...is Naruto-Kun...?" Neji sighed.

Everyone remained silent.

"He went into surgery with Hinata, but they wouldn't let him go in, so, he's been sitting outside of the surgery door ever since." Shikamaru sighed, extinguishing his cigarette.

Neji sighed, sitting down and pulling TenTen close to him as he grit his teeth and punched the floor.

"Goddammit...! Why couldn't anyone just leave them alone?! This is supposed to be the happiest time of Hinata-Chan's life...and god knows Naruto-Kun has done nothing to deserve this tragedy after all he's been through in his life."

He heard Ino sigh as she wiped a few tears away.

"It just makes you wonder why such bad things happen to good people..."

They were all at full attention when they saw Naruto walking down the hallway. His eyes were transfixed in front of him, but those beautiful blue orbs were filled with a deep, painful sadness. He was wearing only his black and orange jacket and the matching pants, going completely shirtless beneath the jacket as it gaped open. No one said anything as he walked past them, though they wondered if he'd heard anything about Hinata.

"Sasuke." he said, his back to the group.

Sasuke stood up and Naruto looked over his shoulder.

"Walk with me a while."

Sasuke walked by his friend's side as they left Tsunade's place, walking out into the night. Neither one said anything for a very, very long time until they arrived at the mountainous monument of the four Hogakes. Naruto stared up at them for a while and sighed.

"Can somehow who couldn't protect his own wife and child become Hokage...?"

"Naruto..." Sasuke began.

"She was standing right outside of the house. How long...was she in pain before I heard Sakura banging on my door? By that time, all I saw was the blood on the floor. Kurenai-Sensei and Tsunade had already taken Hinata to the hospital."

Sasuke watched his friend/rival's blonde bangs hang over his eyes.

"I can't even protect my unborn child..."

He clenched his fists and Sasuke could clearly see the crystal tears flowing down his friend's face. Naruto turned to look at Sasuke and grit his teeth and yelled,

"WHO THE HELL WOULD DO THIS TO HINATA?!"

His cry echoed throught the mountains as he dropped to his knees. He grit his teeth and clenched his eyes shut, trying to keep anymore tears from spilling down his face. Sasuke walked over to his friend and dropped to one knee, putting his hand on Naruto's back. He sighed a little.

"I'm as mad as you are, Naruto. Because we both know..."

Naruto looked up at his friend who narrowed his eyes.

"There is no reason to be so cruel to a child who cannot do anything in return."

Naruto's eyes widened, seeing the pain of Sasuke's own childhood. It instantly reminded Naruto of his own. Without warning, the uncaring, usually cold Sasuke did something unexpected: he sighed a little before hugging his friend. Both sighed a little as Naruto continued to cry.

"I know what it feels like to want revenge for the ones you love...which is why I'm telling you this now..."

He embraced Naruto closer. Sakura stood from the top of Tsunade's stairs as, her white coat wafting in the air as she looked upon the scene. Naruto was kneeling on the ground, his head pressed to Sasuke's chest as the older-by-a-month Uchiha embraced him with boy arms. Sakura wiped a few tears away and walked back inside. Naruto felt Sasuke's embrace tighten a little as he whispered,

"You get your revenge no matter what. You avenge Hinata and your unborn son and make them pay. If someone hurt Sakura-Chan in anyway..."

Naruto looked up as Sasuke's who's eyes were narrowed in hate. He softened his look to a more serious one and looked at Naruto.

"Get your revenge. Find out who'd want to deliberately hurt your child because consider this...If they really wanted to, they could have killed Hinata as well and when she would have died, so would the baby."

Sasuke looked at Naruto's eyes flare red as he grit his teeth. They both stood up as the sun slowly began to arise over konoha.

"Go see Hinata-Chan first if she's out of surgery. You're the one she really wants to see."

Naruto sighed as the two headed back into Tsunade's private clinic. They were instantly greeted by Sakura who looked very tired, but smiled.

"You can go see Hinata-Chan now, Naruto. She's awake, but we had to administer some drugs to dull the pain from the surgery."

"How's the...?!" Naruto quickly asked.

She chuckled and looked at him.

"Completely unharmed."

"But how?!" TenTen asked.

"I'll explain it to you all. Naruto-Kun, you can go and see Hinata."

Naruto hurried down the hallway, slowly opening the door. Hinata was laying in a bed with the blanket pulled up to her chin. She looked as if she were still sleeping. Beside her bed was a table of drawers where a pitcher of water and and single in a vase flower sat. Kurenai looked up at Naruto and smiled. Tsunade and Kurenai left quietly as Tsunade whispered,

"Be glad the nine-tailed fox lives within you."

"Huh?"

Tsunade smiled and yawned.

"Well, I have to go nurse a hangover. Take your time here, Naruto."

Kurenai waved as they left. Naruto walked over to Hinata, seeing the first rays of sunlight pouring in through the sheer white curtains. He sat beside her bedside and took her hand, kissing it softly. He sighed, resting his arms and then his head on the bed. He closed his eyes for what only felt like for a moment until he could feel soft fingers gently ruffling his hair. He groaned a little, opening his eyes, seeing a smiling Hinata sitting up. She was wearing a white hospital night-gown, but she still looked beautiful. Naruto moaned slightly, pushing his head against her fingernails the way a cat might.

"Hinata-Chan..." he whispered.

"How are you, Naruto?" she smiled.

"I should be asking you that!"

He took her hand and kissed it. She put her hand on her stomach and smiled.

"We're fine..."

Naruto gripped the blanket as he lowered his head. Hinata saw his tears slowly pouring down his face.

"Thank god...I was....I was so afraid..."

He took her hand and locked it with hers. Hinata smiled softly, still feeling a little sore.

"Naruto-Kun, do you know what saved our baby...?"

Naruto shook his head and sat up. His eyes widened when she put her hands on his face. Tears cascaded down Hinata's face as she smiled.

"You did."

"Wh...what?! But how?!"

"It was a full blast of chakra that was sent directly through my stomach. I'd felt a pain like no other...but when Tsunade finished her operation, she said that something was stopping her from getting near our unborn son. Like a barrier or something..."

She put her hand on her stomach and took Naruto's hand and placed it there.

"It was a demon barrier."

Naruto's eyes widened as it slowly dawned upon him.

"K...Kyuubi...?"

"He protected our baby, Naruto-Kun. I even thought it was a little strange. While I was unconscious, I saw him...in like a dream. He was standing directly in front of me and he said, "No harm shall come to this child. It is...the wish of Naruto Uzamaki."

Naruto could have been knocked over with a feather. He placed his hand on his own stomach where Kyuubi was sealed. He grit his teeth and began shaking.

"Arigato, Kyuubi...Thank you so much..."

"Because of the mixed chakra, when our son was attacked, your chakra, being of two because of Kyuubi's chakra and because of your own, neutralized the attacking chakra."

"So...does that mean our child has Kyuubi chakra as well?"

"Hai, Naruto-Kun. Though the being is sealed inside of you...our child will always be protected by some of his father's special chakra..."

Hinata smiled warmly, tears bathing under her cheeks. She put her hand to the side of his face and whispered,

"And that...makes you a better father than you'll ever know. Thank you, Naruto-Kun...for giving our baby a chance at life."

Naruto cried once more, whimpering a little as he fully embraced Hinata. Hours later, there was a small knock on the door.

"Come in." Naruto called.

Ino walked in, dressed in her work clothes of a brown skirt and a white blouse with a blue apron over it. She had the most enormous bushel of flowers she could carry with her of all sorts of shapes and sizes.

"Hinata-Chan, how are you feeling? She's awake, everyone!"

Hinata's eyes widened when she saw all of her friends carrying some form of gift. Ino sat the flowers by the window and smiled.

"These are from me and my family. Orchids, roses, daisies, lillies...and of course, babies' breath."

Hinata smiled as Ino hugged her. Ino stepped back and elbowed Chouji who blushed as he held a huge, bento box container.

"I um...can't...really cook well, but I love food. So...I tried making you a lot of my mom's famous recipies. Um...you can eat it when you get better. There's a lot of things here to help the baby grow and be healthy too."

He blushed when the angelic Hinata took the lunchbox and sat it down. She opened it and wouldn't say it aloud, but everything looked pretty...um...disgusting. She blushed and smiled.

"Thank you, Chouji. May I eat some now?"

"Of...of course, Hinata-Chan!"

He fished around in his armor for a second before handing her a napkin and a pair of chopsticks. Hinata used the chopsticks to pick up what looked like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with spegetti, fish heads and rice. She took a bite of it and much to her surprise, it was delicious.

"Thank you, Chouji! It's wonderful!"

Chouji blushed horribly and smiled. Hinata put the lunchbox off to the side as Shikamaru walked forward with a small box.

"Here. This will help you get your strength up. I mean, if you want it."

"Arigato, Shikamaru-Kun."

Shikamaru shrugged and said,

"Well, we just had it laying around, so..."

He froze when he felt the blunt end of a giant fan hit him on the head.

"Oi! Shikamaru!" Temari scolded.

"I...hope you like it..." He said through grit teeth.

Hinata stifled a giggle before opening it. Inside were two, small silver earrings similar to his. After rubbing his head, he pointed to them.

"These are really special. These enhance your chakra because they're made of Onyx Silver. A special rock that enhances chakra. It'll make you a lot stronger. I didn't know your ears were peirced, otherwise, I would have given them to you sooner."

Hinata put the earrings in her ears and smiled.

"I love them, Shikamaru-Kun."

Shikamaru was bumped out of the way by Temari who grinned.

"How ya feeling, Hinata-Chan?"

"Better now. How are you, Temari?"

Temari blushed and scratched the back of her head.

"Never better! I'm just...really glad you are unharmed."

Temari leaned in and whispered,

"Because Naruto-Kun...would be all alone if it weren't for you. So please...stay by his side, okay?"

Hinata was obviously surprised by Temari's words, but she smiled and nodded as Sakura moved the very thoughtful Temari out of the way.

"Okay, let the godmother through." Sakura smiled.

"Hey...!" Temari huffed.

Sakura giggled as she took Hinata's hands and smiled.

"How are you feeling?"

"Very well, thanks to you, Sakura-Chan. You are a wonderful medical-nin."

Sakura blushed a little. Hinata was more than surprised when she saw Sakura a large basket of apples and oranges.

"These are all freshly picked. Oranges will be really good for the baby and apples help build healthy bones and better chakra flow."

"Wow, Sakura-Chan. You're sounding more and more like a doctor everyday." Naruto chuckled taking the basket and setting it on the floor.

Sakura smiled and nudged Sasuke playfully.

"Well, Sasuke-Kun helped me pick them!"

He blushed and huffed as if he didn't care. Shino handed Hinata a small box and blushed a little.

"This is um...from my mom and me."

Hinata opened the box and saw a beautiful, ice-blue butterfly clip inside. Hinata's eyes sparkled at the gift and she smiled warmly at Shino.

"Arigato, Shino-San."

"N...no problem. How are you feeling?"

"Much better, thank you."

Shino nodded and Temari snapped her fingers.

"Oh yeah! Have you decided on a name for the baby yet?"

"Um...yes, I have."

Naruto looked at her and asked,

"What?"

"Hikaru."

"Isn't that a girl's name?" he replied.

In a quick flash of light, Hinata smiled as she had suceeded in putting a large, smoking lump on her husband's head. She unballed her fist and Naruto said,

"I like it."

Temari laughed a little. So, Hinata did have a little spunk in her after all. Hinata looked at TenTen standing among her friends, staring at her.

"TenTen-Chan..." Hinata smiled.

"Hinata...!"

TenTen hugged Hinata tightly and cried.

"I was so afraid for you! Are you okay? Does anything hurt?"

Hinata hugged TenTen tightly and smiled happily.

"No, TenTen-Chan...I'm fine. Thank you for everything..."

"But...! I didn't do anything!"

"Nonsense. You cried the entire time." Ino teased.

TenTen blushed even worse and looked at Hinata.

"I am happy you shed tears for me, TenTen. Thank you. That is better than any gift you can give me."

TenTen wiped her tears and nodded, startled by a hand on her shoulder. Neji looked at Hinata intensely as if she'd done something wrong.

"Hinata-Chan...does anything hurt...?" he asked.

"No, Neji-Niisama. I'm sorry I worried you."

He shook his head and sighed.

"I promise, Hinata-Chan...I'll avenge you for whoever did this."

All of the talking ceased in the room. Neji balled up his fists.

"I...owe you my life, Hinata-Chan. The fact that someone tried taking you and my nephew's life...is unforgivable!"

Hinata looked down at her lap and nodded.

"Yes...it is."

Naruto suddenly stood up and looked at Neji.

"No. I can't let you do that. The head of whomever did this to Hinata-Chan...is mine."

Neji looked broken. As if he couldn't do a thing and it was breaking his heart.

"But...I can use all the help I can get finding this person and making them pay."

Neji looked up at Naruto who extended his hand with a very serious expression. Neji may not have been Hinata's brother, but Naruto couldn't have cared less. This was Hinata's only respectable family who cared for her. Neji shook Naruto's hand firmly and nodded.

"Gladly."

Sakura looked at the two and sighed. It was now or never.

"Neji...you may find the person sooner than you think."

"Why is that?" TenTen asked, looking at her.

Everyone looked at Sakura and sighed as she lowered her head.

"Whoever did it...used the Gentle Fist technique. A move only known by the Hyuuga clan. Neji...the damage you did when you and Hinata first faced off...that last, powerful blow of chakra that cut straight through her body...was nothing compared to whomever did this. Tsunade and I had to move quickly in the operation because so much had been damaged internally. Because of the barrier surrounding your nephew, the chakra bounced off of it and repelled right back out of her body, doing just as much damage upon leaving her body."

Sakura sighed and Naruto looked more than intense.

"I think...if we think about this, someone from the Hyuuga house is involved in this. And as far as we know, there are only three individuals who know the gentle fist technique."

She pointed at Neji and Hinata.

"You two...and the head of the Hyuuga clan."

Hinata looked down and Neji balled his fist up tightly.

"Hiashi Hyuuga..." he growled.

"But why would he go to such extremes?! Tsunade would kill him if he found out that he was the one who tried to harm baby Hikaru!" Chouji said.

Sakura shook her head and sighed.

"They were simply married by Tsunade which meant no one was to break up their union. Nowhere in our country's laws...does it say that the unborn child could not be touched. Hiashi must have known Hinata was pregnant after the wedding. He could have killed her if he pleased...but that is exactly why he went for the child inside of her."

Shikamaru nodded and sighed.

"Thinking like Hiashi, it would be a curse upon such a thick bloodline to have a baby born of what he sees as 'the village curse'. I know something else..."

Shikamaru walked over to Hinata and pulled up her nightgown. Hinata blushed furiously and Naruto and Temari yelled,

"OI! SHIKAMARU!"

He shook his head and put his hand on Hinata's stomach and closed his eyes, feeling for something. He moved his hand all over her stomach until he could feel two, small holes inside of her stomach.

"Relax. If what you said was correct, Sakura-Chan, when the chakra left her body, it must have attacked whomever had done that to her in the first place."

He pulled Hinata's gown down and nodded.

"You'll want to look for someone who's stomach's pushed inward because of the close contact range that it shot back at them. Hinata, I'm sorry to ask this of you, but could you stand."

Hinata nodded and used all of her strength to stand up. She was steadied by TenTen and Shikamaru looked at Neji.

"Stand behind her. Hinata, you were attacked from behind which meant their arm was long enough to touch you. Hiashi and Neji's arms are about the same distance from their bodies when extended."

Shikamaru put his hand on Hinata's gown and raised it up so everyone could see her back, nevermind the fact she was wearing white, cotton panties. The boys blushed and tried to focus on the matter at hand. Sure enough, it looked as if Hinata had been burned directly on her lower back where it curved in slightly.

"Right there is where the shot was made. If it was done correctly, when it ricochet back OUT of her, it should have hit Hiashi or whoever attacked you..."

He raised Neji's shirt and Shikamaru put his hand on his stomach, right exactly where his stomach was.

"It should be right in the middle of his stomach that the chakra drove itself into. Meaning our suspect will most likely have internal bleeding right around his stomach and their stomach with have a burn mark similar to Hinata's on her back."

Everyone stood speechless. Temari wrapped her arms around Shikamaru and squealed.

"I love it when you're smart!!!!"

Shikamaru blushed and chuckled.

"I didn't advance up the ranks for no reason."

Naruto stood up and nodded.

"Then that's what we're looking for."

Hinata sighed and laid back down in bed.

"If it is my father who's responsible...I want to see him and confront him myself."

"But, Hinata-Chan...!" TenTen said, pulling the blankets back over her friend.

Hinata shook her head.

"No....I have to do this. Neji, Naruto...I want you by my side when you do it. Hikaru is...my child. If anyone will be avenging his near-death..."

Hinata turned her head and looked out of the window.

"It shall be me."

Everyone grew silent as death. No one had ever heard Hinata speak like that before. Sakura sighed and looked at Hinata's medical chart.

"You'll be free to leave in three days or so. But just know, when that chakra left your body, I believe it screwed with your own chakra system. You don't want to overdo it so soon."

"How long will I need to regulate my chakra?" Hinata asked.

"With training, a week."

"A week it will be then. Neji, I have a favor to ask,"

Neji took his cousin's hand.

"Anything."

"Do not return to the main house."

"But...!"

"I know you seek your revenge, but I ask of you to not do anything irrational."

Neji sighed and nodded.

"Alright."

Hinata groaned a little as she sat up in bed once more. She reached inside of the homemade lunchbox and ate something else. It, despite the way it looked, was very delicious.

"Oh! I never asked. Where is Kiba-Kun?"

"HERE I AM!"

Kiba opened the door, panting with a large grin on his face and basket covered with a white checkered blanket."

"Sorry I'm late! How are you feeling?"

Hinata nodded her head and smiled.

"Wonderful, Kiba-Kun. What do you have there?"

"Well, I did some looking around and I found...THIS...!"

He handed the basket to Hinata, standing as proud as he possibly could. Hinata took the basket and smiled.

"A picnic lunch?"

Before she took the blanket off, she gasped in startle as a small squeak came from within the basket.

"What the...?" Naruto asked, looking closer.

A small, familiar head popped out of the basket and meowed happily. Hinata hoisted the white kitten with black stripes out of the basket and smiled happily.

"Oh, Kiba-Kun!!!!! Arigato! It's my little friend from last night!"

The kitten purred happily and nuzzled Hinata happily. Hinata looked at Kiba and kissed his cheek as he bent over, obviously expecting such.

"I knew it was strange Kurenai said she saw a kitten by you last night. So, I went back and looked for it."

"Thank you so much, Kiba-Kun!"

"Wait a second..."

Shikamaru walked over to Hinata and grabbed the kitten by the scruff of it's neck. It meowed wildly and tried scratching at Shikamaru.

"OI! SHIKAMARU!" Temari yelled.

"You DO know this isn't a kitten, right?"

Ino shook her head.

"Are you blind? It IS a kitten. Just look at how adorable it is!"

Shikamaru shook it's head.

"I should be asking you if YOU'RE blind."

"EXCUSE ME?!" Ino asked.

He shook his head and sighed.

"This is a white tiger. Not any ordinary kitten. And judging by the sunshape on it's forehead, I'd have to say it's gonna grow as big as Akamaru is now."

"Wait, what?! A white tiger...?" Hinata's eyes widened.

Shikamaru sat the kitten down on Hinata's lap and said kitten hissed and swiped at Shikamaru.

"Yep. You see these things only in the mountains. The fact it's come all the way down here means it doesn't have a family. Guess he was just attracted to your really sweet chakra, Hinata-Chan."

"Her chakra...?"

"Oh! I know what he means!" TenTen smiled.

TenTen pet the tiger and it purred happily.

"This is a Koishubi Mountain White Tiger. In old times in China where I come from, shinobi trained with them. They are really, REALLY rare. These special animals feed off chakra, almost like Shino's bugs do. It's ferouciously loyal to their masters and these animals are very, very strong."

Hinata hugged her new pet happily and smiled.

"Well, then, I guess I should be finding a name for him."

She looked at the tiger with it's beautiful sky-blue eyes.

"I think out of respect for it's amazing history, I shall name him Koishubi. Is that okay, TenTen?"

"Sure! There aren't any laws for duplicating a sacred name in China to name an animal that came from that sacred place."

"Koishubi it is then."

Hinata pet the animal until it fell asleep purring. Quietly all of her friends left, save for Naruto.

"You should go home and rest, Naruto-Kun. I'll be fine."

He sighed and stood up with a small yawn.

"I'll just go home and shower and change clothes. But I'll be back to see you soon. Do you want anything while I'm out?"

Hinata smiled and shook her head.

"No, I'll eat Chouji's lunch and some of these apples."

"How about I bring you some fresh water then?"

Hinata nodded and smiled.

"Thank you, Naruto-Kun."

He kissed her gently and put his hand on her stomach before walking out. An hour or so later, Hinata was in the process of peeling an apple and letting Koishubi eat the apple skins when she heard a knocking on the door.

"Come in." she smiled.

She watched with fear as her father opened the door and walked in, closing it behind him.

"Hinata. I see you are well."

"F...father..."

He stood at a distance for a moment, observing Hinata, watching the Koishubi Tiger on her lap. The second he took a step near her, it hissed dangerously and all the fur raised upon it's body.

"Oh, my! Koi-Chan...!"

Hiashi didn't take another step forward. He knew if he got near that tiger, no matter how small, one bite was fatal and those things were fast.

"Who is the tiger from?"

"K...Kiba-Kun."

"I see. I figured he'd get you a dog."

Hinata nodded, allowing herself a small, sad smile.

"One must not continuously judge, father."

He cleared his throat.

"So...does your baby still survive?"

Hinata put her hand on her stomach and nodded.

"It does."

Hiashi turned around and coughed a little and Hinata couldn't help but notice a bit of blood coughed into his hand.

"I see. I shall visit you at a later date."

"I'm not going to be here long."

"I see. Good day, Hinata."

"Father," Hinata said.

He stopped, his back still to her.

"I will not let this child be harmed. It is protected by the one thing you detest: the Kyuubi."

He barely glanced over his shoulder at Hinata, but saw her looking at him dead in the eye.

"Next time someone tries for my child's life...they will have to take my own in the process. That is...if they can."

There was a dangerous threat in Hinata's voice. One that he'd never heard. He walked out, closing the door behind him and Hinata looked at Koishubi as he settled down. She remembered seeing the kitten hiss just as dangerously as it did last night when it tried protecting her from further harm. Hinata sighed and stared at the wall for a moment. She continued to peel the apple and sighed, saying to no one in particular,

"I do hope he got the message, but if not...your time will come, father...I shall make sure of that."
