What Dreams May Come

Chapter Fifteen

“Naruto…” panted Sasuke as the tremors eased.

“Shh” hushed Naruto, teasing his fingers through the spiky hair that was Sasuke’s trademark look.

“I…” began Sasuke.

“Don’t say anything.” whispered Naruto.

Sasuke nodded weakly. Even as the aftershocks of the powerful orgasm echoed through his body, his mind continued to spin. He was shocked at his inability to resist the touch of the blonde. It was almost as if his entire being was working against him. Even now in the aftermath, Sasuke longed for him even more. That feeling of longing more than anything else frightened the young man.

Never in his life had he experienced this overwhelming need for the touch of another. He loved his brother but he wasn’t distraught if he didn’t see him or speak to him every day. Yet with Naruto, it seemed almost second nature for him to desire contact. Naruto was fast becoming an addiction that he could not live without. It confused and worried Sasuke. He was uncertain how much was himself and how much was echoes from his past life. A soothing hand lifted and rubbed gently into the tense muscles of his shoulders.

“Breathe, Sasuke.” sighed Naruto against the underside of Sasuke’s jaw.

Sasuke inhaled, noticing for the first time, the burning in his chest from lack of oxygen. He exhaled and leaned against Naruto, taking comfort from the strength of the blonde’s arms. Naruto gave him something that he had never experienced. This instance was the first feeling of true peace that Sasuke had ever felt. It was a deep down feeling of contentment that stemmed from the core of his being and spread throughout his entire body. He didn’t care if he was only feeling the echoes of the past. He felt more alive now that he had ever in his entire life.

While Sasuke sorted through his own thoughts, Naruto breathed in the unique scent of his beloved. It was the same as before and yet different. Originally, Sasuke’s scent held a dark mysterious fragrance that blended with his natural clean smell. This Sasuke lacked that darkness and in its place was a slightly spicy undertone that drove Naruto just as wild, if not wilder. There were so many similarities and yet so many differences. It was as if Sasuke was a different facet of the same gem.

Closing his eyes, Naruto felt his heart ache slightly at the loss. He was now truly coming to terms with himself. He would never have the same Sasuke and yet he found himself just as drawn to this one as the other. Before, the natural rivalry had formed a powerful bond that had only strengthened with time. This second chance that he was given was different. The bond of souls was so thin from the passage of time that Naruto didn’t even feel it until he saw Sasuke with his own eyes. Sasuke, himself, was only able to acknowledge the bond through his dreams.

Memories, they hurt. One moment you are living as if there is no care in the world. Happiness surrounds you. The next, your very soul is ripped from you and you are left a shell of your former self. Naruto acknowledged that for far too long he had allowed the memories and the pain to direct his every thought. Even now, the memories wanted to push their own ideals onto Sasuke. He had been so focused on himself that he hadn’t even listened to Sasuke. He hadn’t even realized that he had begun to let go of the past.

Atop Hokage Mountain, Naruto had decided to not allow his previous loss to rule him. He had made a vow to bring Sasuke back to him. Now standing with Sasuke as he recovered from his orgasm, Naruto found himself coming to a revelation. He was letting go of Sasuke and as a result, falling in love with him all over again.

He knew that he had loved Sasuke and thought that the love would never change. Perhaps it hadn’t changed. He, on the other hand, had changed. His personality was not the same it was and never would be the same. His pain and loss had changed the very core of his being. The fates knew this would happen and altered Sasuke for him.

He no longer needed a partner to prove himself to. He no longer needed an arrogant rival to force himself to better himself and drive him to his limits. He was different now, older in more than just age. Now, he needed an uncertain and innocent lover. He needed someone that he could cherish. He needed someone whose depths were not tarnished from hatred and jealousy. Naruto understood now. He was no longer the savior. He was the one that needed to be saved.

“Sasuke?” whispered Naruto, his voice cracking under the revelations he had allowed himself to see.

“Hmm.” hummed Sasuke, as his drowsy eyes opened to stare into clouded blue.

“Would you let me love you?” asked Naruto.

“I don’t understand.” answered a confused Sasuke.

“I have been pushing you so hard to be someone that is long dead. I want you, Uchiha Sasuke. I don’t want who you were, but who you are now.” uttered Naruto, his eyes never moved from Sasuke’s.

“…”

“Have dinner with me on Friday.” whispered Naruto.

Sasuke remained silent as he attempted to comprehend what was going through his mind. His heart pounded, his throat went dry, and soul seemed to rejoice upon hearing the words coming from the blonde’s mouth.

“I wanted things to be like they were before but they can’t ever be like that again. You are too different…I am too different. The bond is still there and it grows stronger but we have changed. We have to learn each other again.” explained Naruto, his eyes growing soft.

“And just now?” asked Sasuke, referring to the interlude that had them hidden in the dense trees of the park.

“A taste of what could be.” answered Naruto. “I won’t force you into anything. If you want me to never see you again, I will abide by your wishes.”

Sasuke licked his lips and blushed as he saw Naruto’s eyes darken at the motion. This wasn’t exactly what he had planned to discuss with the blonde but it seemed that now he understood what Sasuke had been trying to tell him. The memories he dreamed were more like watching a movie than true memories of his own. He saw the past but he had not lived it. It had not shaped him.

“I think dinner would be nice.” blushed Sasuke.

The blue eyes missed nothing and the faint blush deepened and flushed across Sasuke’s face. How did he keep doing that to him? He tried to be cool and collected and yet, one glance from Naruto and he was reduced to an innocent virgin schoolgirl. Naruto’s fingers lifted, grazed the pale pink skin on his cheeks before they ghosted over damp lips and finally dropped to adjust Sasuke’s clothing into a more presentable fashion.

Naruto smiled and linked his fingers with Sasuke’s. Tugging slightly, Naruto led them back to where the band was clearing the stage. Most of the park goers had left and only a few stragglers remained. Sasuke started to pack up their lunch while Naruto walked over to speak with the band. Sasuke watched in amazement as the young singer threw her arms around Naruto before rushing back towards her band mates.

“What did you say to her?” asked Sasuke when Naruto approached.

“I just gave her the card of a music producer that might be interested in their music. I told you, a lot of bands make their starts here. I am on good terms with several recording labels and when I see a particular band that strikes a cord I pass on the word.” grinned Naruto.

“Hn.” grunted Sasuke but he couldn’t help but be happy. The music and lyrics had truly moved him and it gave him joy to know that the group would soon have the means to continue on with their wonderful sound.

Both men headed to the car and the drive back to Sasuke’s apartment continued in silence. Naruto pulled into an open spot and cut the engine off. Turning to look at Sasuke, Naruto couldn’t help but be endeared by the slightly embarrassed glances that the raven haired young man was sending his way.

“You can change your mind.” grinned Naruto.

“I don’t want to.” mumbled Sasuke.

“I’m glad.” said Naruto gently.

“What would you have done if I had said no?” asked Sasuke, apprehensively.

“Truthfully, I hadn’t thought that far ahead.” answered Naruto, lifting a hand to rub the back of his neck in a nervous gesture.

“I’m nervous.” swallowed Sasuke.

“I can tell.” smiled Naruto.

“I don’t know what to say or how to act. I don’t know which is the real me and which is what I used to be.” whispered Sasuke.

“Don’t think about it. Just do what you think is right. Your past isn’t who you are but it did shape you. Don’t be afraid of it.” said Naruto before leaning in and brushing his lips over surprised pink ones.

The kiss, like the several that they had shared, was just as soul stirring and just as moving. That seemed to be natural thing with the two of them. Each kiss was different but they all shared the deep and moving nature that pulled both souls together. This kiss was a meeting of souls, nothing more and nothing less.

When Naruto pulled back, Sasuke lifted dazed eyes to his own. A small smile turned up the corners of his lips. The smile seemed so small and yet it meant so much more than the largest grin. This time, the smile reached his eyes. Gripping the door handle, Sasuke pushed open the door and pulled his slender frame from the car. Leaning down, he looked in at Naruto.

“He said the same thing to me.” said Sasuke.

“Who?” asked Naruto.

“Me.” answered Sasuke before shutting the door and making his way towards his apartment.

Naruto sat mulling over what Sasuke had said as he watched the other man open the door to his apartment and disappear inside. Sighing, Naruto started his car and pulled from the apartment complex. It looked as if Sasuke had done some searching deep in his soul as well.

Once home, Naruto collapsed on his bed and replayed every moment of their afternoon together. The gleam of sweat that dampened Sasuke’s skin, the flush of pink across pale skin, and the way Sasuke’s muscles had quivered under his touch, all played through his mind. Sasuke was so innocent and responsive. His body was perfect in every aspect. He no longer had the harshly cut muscles of a warrior. Instead, they had been replaced by the taunt and smooth muscles of a runner, though he retained the natural grace of a dancer.

Naruto felt himself drifting deeper into a relaxed state. His body ached for the release denied him earlier in the afternoon, but the thought of self-induced orgasm held little pleasure for him. He wanted only Sasuke. Using a meditative technique taught to him by Gaara many years ago, Naruto felt his mind drift into a relaxed state as slumber called him into its arms.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kyuubi sighed in contentment in his dark room. The air of peace that invaded every particle of Naruto’s being was addictive after so long being denied it. The streams of fate danced around him like ribbons, the future, as fluid as water, was revealed to him in all its aspects. He saw that Sakura would once again lose her heart to the strange Rock Lee. He smirked as he watched the masked Kakashi sneak his way into Iruka’s bedroom for a midnight tryst. For all intensive purposes, everything seemed right in the world.
Knowing that those that loved Naruto would be happy was one of the pleasures Kyuubi enjoyed. Even after all these years, his secret shame was being healed. Perhaps his mother had forgiven him after all. So many lives were being rebuilt; even Naruto’s torn soul was being sewn back together. Yes, he was being forgiven for his fear.
Kyuubi closed his eyes and allowed the flow of fate to wash over him. An odd feeling chilled him. It was a far too familiar feeling. It held the same chill that had forced him to drag Naruto through a millennium of suffering.
Snapping his eyes open, Kyuubi’s inner eyes scanned the threads that weaved their futures in front of him. Finding what he sought, Kyuubi grasped it and scanned the contents. His blood froze in his veins and his heart literally stopped in his chest.
‘No, not again.’ he whispered in anguish.
‘Mother, why?’ he asked the empty room.
Growling, Kyuubi began to pace his cage in a style that was reminiscent of his early imprisonment inside Naruto. His mind spun just as it had over a thousand years ago when he had foreseen the death of Sasuke. The past flowed over Kyuubi as he remembered the events that had led to him nearly destroying Naruto.
“Kyuubi” whispered an ethereal voice.
Red eyes jerked open and scanned the interior of his prison. He knew that voice and he wasn’t sure if it was his imagination and longing to once again be graced with her presence or if she had finally decided to forgive him his transgressions.
‘Mother?’ uttered Kyuubi with reverence.
“You feel them once again?” asked Fate.
‘Yes.’ answered Kyuubi.
“You have not looked at them?” she asked again.
‘I am unworthy to use the gift you bestowed on me.’ whined the great beast.
“You are never unworthy of me.” comforted Fate.
‘What would you have me do, Mother?’ asked Kyuubi.
“Look into the future of Naruto.” she answered.
Kyuubi frowned. It was rare for her to make such a request. For the most part, beings such as Fate and Destiny avoided interference in the future of humans. They taught their children the same. Once a soul’s fate was woven by Fate and Destiny, there was little that could be done unless divine intervention occurred. To make such a request was odd indeed. Kyuubi decided to obey her wishes and opened his inner eyes to see the threads as they weaved their way through the lives of all living creatures. He saw that many threads seemed to intersect with one in particular. Grasping the thread, Kyuubi saw the fate of his host.
‘No!’ he cried out.
“You see?” she asked
‘He will not survive the loss.’ cried Kyuubi.
“You doubt his strength?” she asked, like any greater creature, most of her words were stated in the form of a question. It was their way and difficult for those not used to it.
‘Naruto is strong but I think he would surely follow Sasuke into death.’ answered Kyuubi grudgingly.
“You care for the boy?” she asked with a smile.
‘He is my host. His life is my own.’ snarled Kyuubi.
Tinkling laugher surrounded the room. Fate was one of the beings that found humor in many things. It was one reason why fate was so ironic many times. Her spinning of the threads provided her with much enjoyment.
“Fate is an interesting thing. If I gave you the power to save your Naruto, would you take it?” she asked.
‘I would.’ he answered.
“Even if the cost is great?”
‘My death is not something I desire.’
“Death is a part of life, is it not?”
Kyuubi didn’t answer. He was tired of her games. He loved her, she was his mother, but she was annoying.
“Very well. I will give you the power to save them both. The cost maybe more than you are willing to pay.” she warned.
‘Do it.’ sighed Kyuubi.
The darkness parted and tall slender woman stepped from the abyss. Everything about her was white. Her hair, her skin, her eyes, and her clothes were all the purest white. To look at her, one would think she was a blind albino. Looks could be deceiving. She was probably the most powerful being in creation under the creator himself. Her white shift fluttered around her in the breezeless room. Lifting a pale hand, Fate approached the sealed cage and placed her hand on the seal. No great sparks or surges of power signaled the alteration in the fourth Hokage’s seal. No show of power was released; however, Kyuubi felt the change. He was still bound to Naruto, but he was no longer bound in the body.
Kyuubi felt the change in the threads of fate. Sasuke’s death was no longer the only possibility. The thread showed the two futures. One where Naruto and Sasuke lived out their lives in happiness. Naruto became the greatest Hokage that had ever lived, bringing the largest unification of nations and villages that the world had seen. The only cost was Kyuubi’s life.
The second fate was just as grim for the fox. Sasuke’s death destroyed Naruto. A mere two weeks after the funeral, Naruto took his own life joining his beloved in the hereafter.
‘You did this on purpose.’ growled Kyuubi, his anger rising to great levels, leaking out into the atmosphere.
“Did I?” she inquired.
‘You damned me.’ he roared.
“You judge too quickly.” she stated.
‘I’ll find a way to change the future that you decreed.’ Kyuubi hissed.
“You know a way?” she probed.
‘Not like I’d tell you.’ he growled before settling himself once again in the cage.
“I have given you five years. Please make your decision by then. Fate must be obeyed.” she whispered before fading into nothing.
Kyuubi growled. Anger poured off of him and leaked into Naruto. He felt the restlessness in the blonde. He felt him blow up at anyone that approached him. Drawing in deep breathes of air; Kyuubi calmed his mind and set about analyzing the futures. Neither was beneficial to him but one definitely was the better of the two. The big question was how to create a third option that did not result in his death. He liked Naruto but he didn’t want to die for his happiness.
For the next few weeks, Kyuubi sorted through the lives of everyone that surrounded Naruto. No matter what ends he found, none were enough to save Sasuke. It was as if Fate had cursed him in order to make a point to Kyuubi.
‘I won’t die just because she said so.’ snarled Kyuubi.
An idea clinked in his mind. If he couldn’t keep Sasuke alive while remaining alive himself, he would just keep Naruto alive permanently. Studying his chakra levels, Kyuubi decided that either way he was fucked so he might as well attempt it. Drawing in his chakra, Kyuubi slowly sent it through every pore of Naruto, almost freezing Naruto’s cells.
Kyuubi lowered himself to the ground, exhausted. He would have to maintain the chakra flow but at least he could alter Naruto’s own chakra pathways to relieve a significant amount of the burden now that the cells had been saturated. He would have to focus his own chakra towards keeping Naruto’s body healed and healthy. Naruto’s own significant chakra would keep the cells young and healthy.
The years passed naturally. Naruto and Sasuke only grew closer over the next five years, neither realizing that Naruto wasn’t aging. As always, Kyuubi healed any injuries and illness that befell the blonde. Finally, the day arrived in which Kyuubi would defy his mother. The cost was high but he wasn’t ready to sacrifice his life.
“Sasuke!” screamed Naruto in agony.
Kyuubi buried his face in his fur and prayed that it would be over soon. He didn’t think he could bear to hear Naruto scream like that again. The screams lasted for what seemed like a life time. Though Naruto had stopped screaming, the sound echoed in Kyuubi’s ears for much longer. He kept telling himself that the end justified the means. The words, however, seemed empty.
Kyuubi settled once more in his cage. It really wasn’t a prison, he could leave any time he liked but if he did, his ability to heal Naruto would be severed. So he never left, staying where he could keep an eye on the boy.
Now Fate was letting him know that she was well aware of what he was doing. She was his mother after all. This time, Naruto would not survive. Kyuubi might be able to keep his body alive, but his soul would die as surely as if he took a knife to his throat. There would be no escaping this time around.
“Did you think you could defy fate forever, little fox?” she said, appearing at his side, her pale fingers running through his soft fur.
‘I can change Sasuke’s fate.’ growled Kyuubi. It had been over a thousand years since he had spoken to his mother. Even after all this time, the hurt was still there. She was effectively murdering her child.
“Not this time. I allowed you to play your little game. You are lucky Naruto didn’t completely loose his sanity. A weaker man would have crumbled under the weight of such grief.” she purred.
‘You knew what I would do.’ gaped Kyuubi.
“Fate is a thread that I spin. Did you truly think you could change what I made?” she teased.
‘I will change both their fates. I will defy you.’ snapped Kyuubi.
“Little fox, I am Fate, sister to Destiny. You can’t escape us and neither can they.” she smiled before fading once again into the abyss.
‘I will change their fate, Mother. One way or another.’ growled Kyuubi, his eyes flaring red.
“Why are you so afraid, my little fox?” she questioned him.
Fate had refused to bend and now he was going to be forced to relive the past. He was being offered the same choice. Save Sasuke and die or allow him to die and watch Naruto would shortly follow. Would he be able to comfort Naruto again? Would Naruto be able to survive another millennia alone? Kyuubi didn’t want to think about the answer to that question. The bitter truth was glaring him directly in the face.
~Thank you for the reviews~
msuzumaki I too love the family dynamic of these two in this story. Its actually one of my favorite parts of the whole fic.
Nickles I love them too and yep several interesting twists and turns before the end.
AlysiaStorms Yea I know. The sharingan is one of my favorite aspects of Sasuke/Itachi. I just think it looks neat as hell.
Sneakyfox glad you liked it. I get extremely nervous about sex scenes. I was told it was a bit too fluffy and sappy and I was a bit disappointed but several of my friends on Y! knocked me out of the funk that I got into.
blugirlami21 I’m planning on it. I like fluffy soul stirring love to balance out the extreme angst.
guitarmania07 I hope you had some tissue available to plug up your nose with ^.~. it’s a requirement in my life too.
Annieme glad you enjoyed it. It was actually one of the easier chapters to write after the first two.
Zafirya Yay Happy Birthday. Some music just does that to me too. You get goose bumps every time you hear the melody.
Xander B Yea its hard to imagine only having his hand for company for so long. Yea it was such a hard decision to put in that little bit at the end. I wasn’t sure if they were ready but at the same time I didn’t want them going in the same circle of tension. I made an executive decision. lol
Alyneese Yes Itachi has become a favorite of mine in this story. I almost look for reasons to bring him into the story, hes just so sexy. I am sorry that you thought the love scene was too sappy but I thought it suited the general tone of the chapter.
Pixie well you can expect the whole nine yards very, very soon.
Xzanayu Yes I love the sharingan and romance is the name of the game.
good chaos I accept your love and adoration. Gaarasslave on Y! is drawing me a picture but I don’t know the scene that will be in inspiration. I also have some stuff on deviant art and Y! both are under the name daydreamer79.
vivpiv I didn’t want Itachi and Naruto getting off on too bad of a foot due to future events in a later chapter and Itachi is very understanding of his brother and was just relieved that he wasn’t lost or hurt somewhere. LOL that would be interesting to see the Sexy no jutsu. Remember, anything’s possible til I put fin at the end.
