Chapter: Waking
Her head was pounding, her body still felt like lead, and she was ravenously hungry. Slowly she opened her eyes and was happy to see it wasn’t to bright, that was until she remembered that is was so dark because of dark jutsu. She sighed, Sakura was back to the land of the living. Carefully she sat up and the blankets fell away from her. Blinking she looked down at them and realized the very top one was Sai’s, Sakura recognized it from a few missions they had shared together.
Reaching out she slid her hand over it, so very soft to coarse to be bear hide. Wolf possibly? A very exotic and expensive thing wolf hide. Not to mention highly rare, and this blanket was thick and well taken care of. Sakura wondered where he had gotten it, had he won it from one of his battles when he had been in ANBU ROOT? Or had he bought it with the money he no doubt made?
The tent unzipped and in stepped Ino with Iruka sensei. Sakura frowned at the obvious pain the man was feeling. Ino came up to her and checked her saying nothing, apparently there was something she would not be pleased about.
“What is it?”
Iruka smiled, “how are you Sakura?”
Sakura looked at him, “I’m fine Iruka-sensei. Is there something I should know?”
“I would like to know why you pushed yourself so hard? You should have died.”
Sakura sighed, “I can store chakra like Tsunade-sama. She taught me the jutsu, I’m surprised Sai didn’t tell all of you.”
Iruka frowned, “he did. That doesn’t mean that I am any less enthused about you risking yourself like that.”
“I had no choice Iruka-sensei.”
He seemed to consider this and then with a sigh he nodded. Ino sat back on her heels and smiled at her.
“Good to go forehead.”
“Good to know Ino-pig.”
“The only difference being is your hair color,” Ino added.
The blond held up a mirror and Sakura’s eyes widened at the sight. Her bangs were now a silver white fading backwards until it was her usual dark pink. Raising her hands she ran her fingers through her white bangs, Sakura wasn’t sure she liked the new look. How wonderful of fate, not only did she have a large forehead she was going grey at age twenty four.
“Fantastic.”
Iruka looked at her with empathy, “maybe if you grow it out it will look nicer.”
“Maybe,” She conceded, besides she had more important things to worry about.
More important things as a nin, and a medic to accomplish and up hold. Speaking of which she had passed out after shortly healing Sai’s back. She needed to check to make sure that everything was alright with. Her stomach grumbled reminding her she needed to eat first and foremost.
“I will go get you something,” Ino offered and then stood leaving the tent.
“How long have a been asleep?”
“A week.”
“Wow, it only feels like a couple days at most. Have we moved then?”
“Yes, we are currently camping at a hot springs. We were in desperate need of cleansing.”
Sakura looked down at her self and grimaced, so was she.
“Once you have eaten you can go to the hot spring and clean up.”
“Thank you. After that though I will need to check everyone’s health. I’m sure Ino had done an excellent job, but I want to make sure.”
“I can understand your concern, you are the senior MED nin here.”
Her green eyes widened, she had actually forgotten that. That was one more thing she was going to have to find a way to rectify. She and Ino couldn’t continue to be the only ones. Sakura’s face creased into a frown, new recruits were in order, Tsunade-sama would just have to deal with such a thing where ever the woman was at now. She hoped dead or simply sleeping, meeting that woman in crazed mode would cause her to have nightmares forever.
“Sai will be first,” she announced he’d had the worse of the injuries besides the rape victims.
Iruka shifted uneasily, “that will not be possible. He was chosen to go on the retrieval mission to Suna.”
Sakura glared down at the white and black wolf hide, “you mean volunteered.”
“Perhaps, but Shikamaru agreed he was best for it.”
“Just him?”
“And Akamaru.”
Her heart twisted up at the thought of him alone without Kiba, “right.”
Ino stepped back into the tent with baked potatoes, corn, and flavored pork. Sakura wasn’t sure where they had come up with such a meal, but she wasn’t going to complain she needed it.
“That’s all we can give you, it’s a bigger ration than most people but you needed it.” Ino explained.
“Thanks,” Sakura replied before digging in.
“So,” Iruka said carefully.
Sakura paused, “what?”
“We’ve picked up a stray.”
Sakura chewed swallowed then spoke, “that’s a good thing.”
“It’s the redhead who traveled with Sasuke.”
Sakura’s blood went cold, and the fork dropped from her numb fingers, “…”
“He abandoned that group as well. She barely made it out with her life,” Ino added.
Sakura shoved her feelings back away from her and she replied in a monotone, “does she have any serious injuries I should be aware of?”
Iruka seemed sad as he replied, “bite marks everywhere, but she claims that is how she heals people.”
“Anything else?”
“Not that we are aware of, the bitch won’t even let me look at her.” Ino grouched.
Sakura finished her food, “I should go look at her myself then.”
“I’m not sure,” Iruka began.
“Iruka-sensei this is like you not wanting me to heal your back.” With that said she exited the tent.
Ino stepped up behind her and slung a coat over her shoulders. Sakura pulled it tight around her and looked at her friend with thanks. Ino nodded and walked towards a tent at random, Sakura followed without question. Upon reaching the one needed the opened it and entered, Sakura was a little shocked to see TenTen there.
“Sakura you’re back. That’s always a plus.” TenTen said with a smile.
“Yes well, I can’t sleep forever much as I’d like to.”
The three shared the joke and chuckled, then she turned her attention on the fourth. Karin, the bane of her existence, the woman whom had kept Sasuke away from her. Karin who she’d healed once before and had escaped only to return to him. What an air head. Though Sakura couldn’t blame her for it, she had once been so too.
“I’m here to see to you.”
“That won’t be necessary.”
“I’m sorry I wasn’t aware I’d made myself unclear. You’re getting looked at no arguments.”
Karin’s head jerked her way and they glared at one another for a long moment, then Karin huffed and looked away.
“Whatever.”
“You’ve spent to much time with Sasuke I see.” Sakura said getting down on her knees beside the woman.
Karin snorted, “a lot of good it did me. He left me to fend and die by myself.”
“Yeah he does that a lot.” Sakura said pushing the woman to lay down.
Karin sighed and closed her eyes, “is it odd I still hope he is okay even though he did this?”
Sakura paused and the tent filled with a thick silence, “no we all hope it.”
Karin looked over and saw the other two women nod.
“If only so we can kick his ass,” Sakura amended.
The four laughed and soon Sakura was done. She sat back and smiled at her.
“There all finished. Next time don’t be such a bitch and Ino will take care of it.”
“Thank you,” Karin whispered.
“So what’s this healing ability you have?”
“If someone bites into my skin they can eat my chakra.”
Sakura thought about it, “which is all well and good for an emergency.”
“But you don’t think it’s appropriate.”
“Not for everyday use no, I need MED nins.”
Karin looked at her in surprise, behind her she could feel to other shocked stares. She sighed, she could not continue to be the only gifted one.
“How good is your control?”
“I am not perfect but I am one of the best in the group I was in.”
“Your physicality, are you weak?”
“I am moderate.”
“We will have to fix that once we get somewhere stationary.”
Karin nodded.
“For now I will help you learn some basics like healing bruises and small scrapes. The less I deal with small things the better I can handle larger things.”
“You’re really going to train her…” Ino said astonished.
“Yes, I need someone better than you to help me or at the very least the same so you guys and help each other.” Sakura teased.
Ino stuck her tongue out at her, then something dawned on Sakura.
“Almost forgot,” With that she slapped Karin across the face and the group gasped. Karin left her face turned away. “That’s for being and idiot and going back to help Sasuke do this.”
Karin nodded, it was such a small price to pay, she felt she deserved more for what she had helped to create. Sakura turned her face back to her and she looked into caring sad emerald eyes.
“I will end my anger with you on that. I want you to know this because I might have done the same if he had chosen me instead of you.”
Karin felt the prickling sensation of tears, he had betrayed her and her friends, and all these people, “I’m so sorry.”
“We were both young and naïve, lets leave it at that and move on. We don’t have time for anything else.” Sakura stood and left the tent.
Karin sat there and sobbed, eventually Ino left and TenTen came closer and hugged her to her. It felt good to be next to someone, to feel a caring embrace. She had been without for a very long time. Suddenly she wasn’t just crying about what Sasuke had done, about the countless people who were suffering. Karin found herself crying about everything there was to possibly cry about and she hated it.
“Don’t worry about,” TenTen told her as if reading her mind. “We all have a moment where we need a really good cry.”
“Thanks.”
“No problem.”
***************
She sank down into the warm water and sighed leaning her head against the bank. After her involvement with Karin she had ended up making rounds to the people she had seen. They were all doing relatively well, which was a good sign. She growled when it brought to mind one particular person and how he had taken off. Idiot! He should have been doing anything like that for at least another three days. Not that she had had time to tell him, but really he’d been injured enough times to fuckin’ know by now.
Grumbling a few other curse words under her breath she sank lower into the water until just her nose and up were showing. Her strangely colored hair floating around on top the water. How horrible that he hair was now this color, why hadn’t Tsunade’s ever done this? Then again she would get old looking like a withered prune. It was possible that the jutsu did different things to different people depending on who their bodies worked. It was a thought anyway. She supposed it was better her hair changed color and was permanently like that than to become a shriveled prune.
Sitting back up she began to wash herself and was pleased to start to feel clean once more. Dunking herself under water she came back up and began to lather her hair feeling revived. Water had to have some sort of chakra in it because it always managed to rejuvenate people. Scrubbing away the filth she dunked herself again and rinsed out her hair.
“Much better.” She sighed and leaned back against the back again.
Now what to do to Sai when he came back to camp, she would need to make an example of him so that other knew to listen to her when she told them to do something. She tapped her fingers on a rock and contemplated. She would just figure it out when she saw him.
********
Sai carried Matsuri on his back the woman had passed out from blood loss and was now with fever and cold sweats. He really hoped that Sakura was awake by now, nobody else would be able to help this woman. Somewhere along the line Gaara had reached a point of extreme exhaustion and was now on Akamaru’s back. Everyone else seemed to be doing well, which was promising he did not have anymore ways to carry people.
He grit his teeth when a shock of pain ran up his back, he stopped, breathed in deep, shifted Matsuri’s weight, and then continued walking. Akamaru looked at him with concern and he nodded that he was alright. The dog frowned, which was interesting since he’d never seen a dog be able to do that before, unconvinced. He shrugged best he could, there wasn’t much else to be done anyway. Akamaru seemed to consent to that explanation and went about his business.
“How much further?” A villager asked.
Sai resisted the urge to say somethin highly rude and inappropriate to the man for complaining as if he was caring a hundred and ten pounds of dead weight while injured and exhausted. Gritting his teeth harder he decided ignoring the man was best as he realized if he said anything it would be rude and highly inappropriate in his current bad mood. Instead he settled for sending him a glare. The man seemed cowed and went back to simply walking quietly. Good for him he learned quickly.
A little boy tripped and an elderly woman went and picked him up, again Sai sent that man a heavy glare. He got the point and walked over to take the child. The woman thanked him graciously and then sent a thankful look towards Sai. Sai nodded.
Coming up over the small hill, Sai was relived to see the camp site. They had traveled off course, which wouldn’t have been bad except for those who were injured or passed out. Sai was about ready to pass out. He also smelt like sweat, blood, and dirt not a very appealing combination. So in then end he was happy that they had chosen to come here, he needed to bathe.
Akamaru let out a howl and people came rushing to help him. Carefully he handed Matsuri to Lee, “she needs to see Sakura immediately.”
Lee nodded and turned only to practically bump into the woman. Sakura was furious, she could tell that he was in pain. Sai groaned in his head, he was going to feel more pain before he felt better if her eyes were of any indication. Instead she enveloped him in a hug and he closed his eyes and hugged back. Sakura always smelt so good…
“Sai you fuckin’ idiot,” she mumbled into his neck.
“I apologize Sakura-san.”
She sighed and pulled back, “you didn’t really have a choice.”
“I could have waited possibly.”
“No,” She said and then looked stern again. “But I’m still mad at you for not taking better care of you. I can’t be wasting time putting you back together all the time.”
He kept the obvious comment to himself of who she had only had to do it twice since they had known each other. Well at least serious injuries, he got the usual ones that every nin got most times.
Sakura looked over at Matsuri and he frowned deepened, “Lee take her to my tent.”
“Of course Sakura-chan!” He announced happily and trotted off.
Really, he just trotted off, which was not something that a man should be able to do Sai thought.
“I’ll deal with you after her.”
“That is best.”
Ino walked up to him, “what of the Kazekage?”
“He is just very tired.”
“Cool, less for me to worry about.” Ino then turned to everyone else, “alright people follow me and I’ll do a medical sweep of you and figure out what ya need.”
Sai was happy to be back, he would go take bath before Sakura got a hold of him. He was much to dirty for her to make anything out clearly enough. With that in mind he headed for the springs.
