Chapter 15

Five years later

They walked in unison, one in front, one in the middle and one behind. The gates were in view but none of them cared enough to step back and watch. He was first and when he walked through the gates, two faces greeted him. They were in an offensive position. He heard he was in the bingo book but hadn't believed it. When they attacked, they went for those behind him. Without thought, he spread his arms and they stopped, dead in their tracks. In both hands were swirling blue and white shuriken formed of air and chakra. They were aimed at both shinobi. Genma and Kotetsu visibly swallowed and took cautious steps back. That was when the ANBU stepped from the shadows.

"Uzumaki Naruto, you are under arrest. Uchiha Itatchi, you are under arrest. And...you," they pointed to the giant shark man, "are under arrest." Itatchi scoffed, Kisame smiled and showed a mouth full of very pointy teeth and Naruto simply did nothing but hold his hands out, pointed at who he gaged as the two more powerful ANBU. A shock of pink hair made him study one mask and a shock of white made him study another. As they stepped closer, he let the wind shuriken go. He had not attacked a single person until they threatened. That did not constitute charges of attempted murder.

The wolf and cat ANBU simply side stepped the attack but both got the feeling that if he'd wanted, those attacks would have hit. They were warning shots. When they went to move in, a holler had them halting and falling back into a line that had formed around the blond who'd stepped off a nearby roof to land in front of the trio.

She stared, awestruck. His appearance had changed. A lot. If she looked closely, and even if she didn't, she could see muscles that put any of her shinobi to shame but knew that those muscles, even under stress, would be agile, lithe and graceful. He'd gotten taller and stood about six foot three now. His whiskers were more defined, his hair grown and pulled back by a tie at the base of his neck. His familiar, gravity defying spikes were gone. His face had filled out, grown almost aristocratic in it's features. He had a few bags under his eyes and when she looked solidly at them, she felt her heart stop. They were no longer light, sunny blue. They were not full of life and determination. They were dead, dull, soulless eyes. When he did not speak or acknowledge her in any way, she knew. The Naruto she'd once known was no more.

Out of no where, Naruto's head snapped to the left and when she blinked, she saw Sasuke standing in front of him. He raised his fist again but it was caught by a very tan, scarred arm. Sasuke tried to pull free and cursed when he couldn't. Then, he went air born with nothing more than a flick of Naruto's wrist. It was Itatchi who stepped forward then and looked her dead in the eyes. What she saw made her smile inwardly. Blind. Itatchi was completely blind, but then she frowned. How could he see even though he was blind? Growling, she stepped forward.

"You are all under arrest. Come quietly or we will exert deadly force." Her voice was all business.

"Is that any way to treat your long lost shinobi Hokage-sama?" He spoke the title with a tone akin to humorous sarcasm.

"He has long since been deemed a criminal. You however and your companion behind you, are to be captured alive or dead. Now, come quietly or we will not hesitate to detach your heads from your shoulders." She hissed at him and he simply smiled. It was a smile that sent a shiver down her spine. Even though she didn't move a single muscle, he 'saw' it and smiled once again, that horrible smile.

"Come now Hokage, you are in need of the help we can provide."

"No, we are not." She nodded and when the ANBU surrounding her stepped forward, they were all sent sailing away without so much as a blink from the figure in front of her. It was then that she noticed it wasn't him that did it, but Naruto. And when her eyes darted around, she noticed none of them were harmed beyond what would probably be sore backs and butts in the morning. What on earth-

"I have instructed him not to kill unless we are attacked. If you do not want to lose every shinobi you have here now, you would do well to call them off." Tsunade knew enough about Itatchi to know he never lied. With another glance at Naruto, she noted he was utterly relaxed but watching every shinobi he'd just sent flying with the intent to do harm.

"Back off. All of you." They did so without a word.

"Naruto, heel." She watched, mouth agape, as Naruto walked over to Itatchi's side and proceeded to squat down, wrapping his arms around his knees and stare at the ground.

"What have you done to him?!"

"Nothing he did not enter into willingly."

"You mean nothing you didn't force him into!" She watched as one of Itatchi's eyebrows twitched at the sound of his younger brother's voice.

"Tsunade-sama, I see we will need private quarters to conduct our business without interruption. If you don't mind?" She looked at Sasuke then down to naruto and found herself sighing. Back straight, she headed towards the Hokage tower. Naruto was behind her, followed by Itatchi, then Kisame and then, every ANBU within the village.

They had been in there for hours and not once had they emerged. Sasuke was pacing the length of the hall way, still not believing anything he saw. Naruto squatting at his brother's side. Naruto filled out, muscular and dead. He should have known. Should have pushed harder to find him quicker. Something inside of him had broken when he knew naruto wasn't coming back and now, here he was, sitting inside of the office next to him, only separated by a door and he couldn't do a damn thing. he knew Kakashi and Sakura were standing just off to the side. They had changed from their ANBU outfits into regular clothes and the rest of the Rookie Nine, including Iruka and Konohamaru were piled into the hall way. Neji had his clan ability activated as did Hinita and Shikamaru was using the shadows to try and listen to the conversation but when they all three sighed in unison, he knew they weren't getting anything. Of course, it was his brother.

With a frustrated sigh, he stopped and ran a hand through his short, black hair and looked around the hall way. "We need to do something."

"He is a criminal Sasuke-san. There is nothing we can do."

"Oh, like there wasn't anything that could have been done for me?" Everyone seemed to think about it for a moment before they all gathered around and started talking via sign language. They were interrupted by a belch. Sasuke's black eyes looked passed the wall of bodies to the small figure perched in the window. She wiped her mouth and jumped down, running straight through the crowd of elder bodies and looked at the door, hiked a finger and looked back to Sasuke.

"He's in there huh?" Sasuke didn't say anything. But when she broke open the door, he nearly choked on spit. Everyone turned and watched in abstract horror as the little girl walked into the room, arms crossed over her chest and stared from one person to the other. Naruto stared back. A flicker of recognition ran through his dead, blue eyes but it was gone as quickly as it had come. She didn't need to see it again. At a dead run, she ran over and jumped off the ground, wrapping arms and legs around him. "DA!" She laughed a little and ruffled his blond hair. Everyone watched as she was pulled away from his body and dropped to the floor, carelessly.

There were a few intakes of breath, a few coughs and everyone was staring wide eyed as Aito picked herself up off the floor and dusted her butt off. "Not what I was expecting but it'll do." She turned pitless black eyes up to Naruto and he stared at her. "Nice of you to come back." he said nothing.

Someone clearing their throat had her turning her eyes. Tilting her head to the side, she looked back at her father and back to the one sitting in the chair, staring at her. Well, not staring persay, but he knew she was there. "You must be the long lost Uncle. Pleasure I'm sure." She scoffed and walked passed Naruto and Itatchi, to the desk where she jumped up and sat down.

"Aito."

"Hokage-sama."

"What are you doing here?"

"Oh, you know, heard the rumors and decided to come look for myself." She plucked an invisible fuzzy from her shinobi issued pants and let it fall to the ground.

"You don't have clearance to be here."

"And that hasn't stopped me before." She turned and gave a beaming smile to her superior and then turned back to the group standing at the door. "Shut the door, we have business to conduct!" Sasuke stammered but his view was cut off by the door.

"I see the Uchiha blood is dominant in her veins."

"More than you would know, or care, Uncle." Crossing her arms over her chest, the six year old with the intelligence and wit of someone four times her age looked at the three shinobi standing inside the Hokage's office. "Why have you come back? You are all wanted criminals, two of which are wanted in more than one country."

"Since when do you conduct my business Aito?"

"Since it involved my second father." Both females watched as something flitted through Naruto's gaze but again, was gone just as quickly as it had come. "Now, answer the question." Itatchi chuckled but sat straighter in his chair, blind eyes glued to his niece's form.

"We are here to help you find Hikime. Seeing as it has been five years and you still have not come close to finding her, we can help."

"And how do you propse to do that?"

"With the information we have and the abilities our Kyuubi posesses."

"Ahh, you see, that is where we have a problem Uncle. He was our Kyuubi first. Not yours."

"But he is mine now." She leaned forward, into his face and smiled.

"He will never be yours Uncle. Of that I am sure."

"My my, what a smart mouth for a little squirt." Kisame laughed and watched as that little head turned towards him, slowly. The look in her eyes had him stopping. It was just like the look he'd seen on Itatchi's face time and time again. The look that promised pain that wouldn't be funny.

"This child could kill you without a second thought. If you are done insulting her, let us move on." He heard the female Hokage's words but his eyes were captivated. It wasn't until he saw Naruto step in front of him that he realized she'd entrapped him with her eyes. he cursed and shoved at Naruto but the blond held his stance. he scoffed and looked out the window. Aito moved to sit in Tsunade's lap, staring from one man to the next and then the next. Her eyes stopped on Itatchi again, for the umpteenth time and she studied him. They looked alike, her father and his brother. They even had the same eyes. Eyes like her. She sighed and looked to Naruto. he didn't acknowledge her.

"I applaud you in taking away what was left of him Uncle. It must have been quite a feat indeed."

"Hn."

"Aito?" She looked back at Tsunade and sighed.

"Fine, fine. I won't stir up the criminals. Wouldn't want to upset them..." She growled out something and rested her chin against a hand, staring at Kisame. Boy he was big. He almost touched the ceiling. What would it be like to put a fist through that big skull of his? And what would it be like to wield that giant sword? Granted, it was twice her size if not taller but it would be fun, or that's what she was thinking. When the giant sharkman noticed where she was staring, he smiled. She just stared at the blade, intently. What she wouldn't give to have one of those. It would be better than any weapons TenTen gave her. Oh, maybe she shouldn't think that. TenTen might not appreciate it. Looking away, her gaze went back to Naruto. No, he really wasn't the same person he had been when he'd left. She might have only been a year old then, but she knew, deep down she knew he was different. Just like she knew they really did need the help of these criminals.

Coming back into the conversation, Aito waved a hand, causing voices to still. When her Uncle's eyes and those of her village leader were on her, she started speaking. It amazed everyone when she talked like an adult. Was it really so hard to believe it was possible? Apparently.

"Seeing as how we still have no solid leads, even with the help that Lady Tashiro provided after her death, yes, we do need help, but I assume you want to stay here, in the village. And I also assume you want to have any and all charges dropped so you can actually walk outside without threat of being arrested. Am I correct in my assumptions Uncle?"

"Hn." Tsunade actually stammered but Aito again held up her hand.

"Fine, the charges of treason, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, assault with the intent to kill, murder in the last degree and premeditated assault, battery and murder are dropped." he smiled at her. She just smiled back. "But you are still under arrest for the kidnapping of one of Konoha's shinobi. And, you are under arrest for torture without cause and rape." She watched his face actually contorted and then go into a passive calm. "I'm sorry, there are just some charges that will not be dropped. As for you," she looked to Naruto, "you are under arrest for treason and have been sentenced to death but, we will take the death penalty off the table, strip you of any previously attained rank within the shinobi ranks of Konoha and you have been henceforth, for lack of a better word, booted from your Hokage-in-training status." She didn't wait for a reaction and turned to Kisame. "After you are finished here, you will be arrested and deported to Water Country. They can decide your fate." With that, the six year old hopped off of Tsunade's lap and started for the door. After opening it, she waited and looked back to the three men staring at her. "If you will all come this way, I will show you to your accommodation's for the remainder of your stay in Konoha."

When the three men stepped outside, she waved over her god mother and her adopted uncle. Kakashi and Sakura stepped forward, one in front of the group and one behind and proceeded to show them down the stairs to wait for further instruction. The rest of the shinobi in the hall way looked at her and she waved them all away. Her father stayed. "I'll be home in no time, promise!!" He scoffed at her and vanished just like everyone else. When Aito looked back to her superior, she noticed Tsunade staring at her. "Do you think he's in there?"

Tsunade looked away from the child's penetrating gaze and felt her shoulders slump. "I don't know Aito. I honestly don't know."

"Guess I better go inform Ibiki of his incoming 'visitors' as he calls them."

"The next time you decide to butt into my office like that, make sure you've got the robe on."

"I don't have the robe yet."

"Because you're only six."

"Damn those age limitations!" They shared a laugh and she watched Aito shut the door. Konohamaru had passed up the opportunity to become the next Hokage-in-training and Aito had already started moving up the shinobi ranks. Since she was the daughter of an Uchiha, she was more accepted, but, since she was only six, she would not be able to become the next Hokage for twelve more years. She hated that fact but she enjoyed her childhood to the best of her abilities, even though she constantly confided in Tsunade that she felt empty inside. And even though she was one of the best, if not the best shinobi that Konoha had ever seen, even at age six, she never let anyone treat her like an adult unless it was absolutely necessary. Sasuke hated it and was constantly telling everyone to treat her as a child no matter what, but no one ever listened. Aito had become what everyone had thought Naruto would and yet, here he stood, devoid of emotion and soulless. Shaking her head, Tsunade called for her faithful assistant and ordered a huge bottle of sake. Shizune didn't argue.

The cells under the village were horrible and smelled even worse but, since their newest guests were criminals, albeit, ones with lesser crimes than most of the other cells inhabitants, they were still criminals and could not be allowed in regular society. So, Aito headed up the group, hands in the pockets of her jacket and walked through the seemingly endless maze of cells and hallways. When she made it to Ibiki's office, he shuttered when he looked at her and then looked at who was standing behind her.

"To what do I owe this pleasure Uchiha-san?"

"Well you know, got some new 'visitors' although, these ones aren't like the usuals."

"You have a sick and twisted sense of humor."

"How'd you get the ink off?"

"Alcohol." She winced but laughed.

"Alright alright, I'm sorry but I couldn't help it! It was a perfect opportunity and you have to admit, you deserved it."

"I most certainly did not, but that is besides the point."

"Their charges have changed. And since they changed, they get pretty cells and not the rust buckets. I'm taking them to the north end. You can book them there. No, you can't torture them, even though I would like to see what color that sharkman's blood is over there and no, you can't put them in the same cell. They are to have twenty-four hour guards and if you want, I can recommend a few." The head of ANBU's Torture and Tactic's devision just nodded.

"I have the perfect ones."

"Good. See ya later."

"Uchiha-san?"

"Hm?" Her big, black eyes looked at him.

"No more exploding ink tags."

"Okay!" With that, his door closed and he watched the retreating backs of two men he thought he would never see again, one of which he really wanted to get his hands on. But what Aito said went. As unfortunate as it was.

"Tell me, how did you come to order that guy around?" Aito heard the sharkman's question but chose to ignore it for a few minutes, then, smile on her face, turned and asked him a question.

"Tell me how you got so big and I might indulge the answer."

"How'd you get so smart anyways? Ain't you like...six?"

"Sure I am but, unlike you, my intelligence level is that of a certefied genius and even though I'm small, I can use my height and weight to my advantage. My father isn't as stupid as everyone makes him out to be."

"Hn." Aito stopped walking suddenly enough that Naruto bumped into her. She simply turned and stared at her blood Uncle.

"It's amazing how alike you both are."

"He is nothing like me."

"No, it's a shame actually that you can't be more like him." She turned and started walking and Naruto was left holding Itatchi's arm so he didn't reach out and snatch Aito by her little white head.

Aito lead them each to a separate cell, after thoroughly searching them for weapons and placing chakra binders on their arms. She'd come up with the design and it was flawless. And even though she'd made them, even she couldn't break them, or fool them enough to slip free of one although, she could pick them free with a senbon. She could do alot of things with a senbon needle thanks to a certain senbon chewer. Once the cell doors were locked, she walked over to the large sword and studied it for a moment. The one she'd come to know as Kisame, the sharkman, was laughing as she attempting to pick the blade up.

"You're a little small for that." She just looked at him and smiled. His mouth dropped as he watched her pick up the blade with her thumb and index finger. "I- you- what the hell are you?!"

"My name is Uchiha Uzumaki Aito, sharkface. You'd do well to remember that. Oh, and Uncle," Aito looked to Itatchi to see he was staring dead at her, "If you want your eyes fixed, you might think about letting my other father go from his thrall." With that, she laughed, spun and, carrying the sword that was twice, and then some, her size, she left the prison.

Out of the shadows stepped Sasuke. He had his arms crossed over his chest and was staring at Naruto, then Itatchi. When he'd glared at them enough, he turned to Kisame and sighed.

"You have given her a new toy. I don't think I'll be able to take this one without her noticing. So, if I were you, if you ever get free, I'd think about finding a new chakra eating sword. You won't be getting that one back." And he too was gone. Kisame cursed and pounded on the bars.

"Damn it! Why'd we have to come here Itatchi? You could have just stayed away but no, you just had to come back here and look, I lost my sword to a runt!"

"Shut. Up." Kisame looked to the cell across the room and noticed who'd spoken. Naruto was sitting in the only shadowed corner of his cell, legs crossed, arms resting against his knees in a meditative position.

"Who are you to be talking to me like that?!" Kisame shuttered, visibly, when pure red eyes opened to stare at him. Then they closed. Cursing, Kisame sat on the floor of his small cell and looked at itatchi. "How are we getting out?"

"We aren't."

"NANI?!" Itatchi just looked in his direction and he sighed. "Fine. Fine. Keep the plan from the shark man." Kisame scoffed and stared at the ceiling. Itatchi just watched Naruto. The blond might have been meditating, but he wouldn't sleep. He couldn't. And with a smile, he let the chakra behind his eyes cease and his world went to pitch blackness.

You've really got them wondering.

Shut up and let me concentrate. You're talking is bothersome. There was a growl in his head but he simply ignored it. The demon and he had been on shaky terms since he'd left five years ago but they cooperated with each other when the need arose. Now however, he was just trying to concentrate on the life signs around him. He wasn't asleep because he couldn't be, not without...shaking the thought off, he watched figures moving around and when all stopped, he let out a breath and opened his eyes, looking around. Still in a cell. Still away from his group. He would have frowned but he didn't know how to. Or rightly, he didn't remember how to. No, in the five years he'd been away, he'd lost all emotions. He did not feel because he could not. Itatchi had seen to that. When the thought of Itatchi passed into his mind, he looked across the room, to the cell next to Kisame and noticed Itatchi's eyes were completely blank. he must not have been worried enough to use his blind eyes. And he was so far away. If anything were to happen, he would not be able to make it over there to help.

His mind traced back to the small child who'd shown them here. Was it really Aito? When he'd left she was just a year old. She had gotten big and had the same smart mouth he remembered Sasuke possessing. It was obvious the Uchiha blood was more dominant in her than whoever else's flowed through her veins. She was smart even though she was small. She wore jounin issue gear and it made naruto wonder how high up she really was in the shinobi ranks. The way she acted in Tsunade's office suggested high enough that she could act in Tsunade's place. And that left one option. She had taken his place as the Hokage-in-training. If he could have felt, the thought would have bothered him and made his blood boil but instead, he just noted she was a worthy advisory and she would need to be taken out to ensure the protection of his group. His list of worthy opponents was only at four. Tsunade, Jiraya, Kakashi and now Aito. He hadn't actually seen Sakura in action in five years nor had he kept tabs on the rest of Konoha's shinobi. If he had, he might have upped the list but, until he saw any of them in action, he would stay with his list of four.

Naruto's attention was caught some time later when someone stopped in front of his cell. He noticed a shock of pink hair. Sakura. Across the room, he noticed long, flowing black hair. Neji. And then he watched as two more shinobi stepped forward. Kiba and Lee. Sakura opened his cell and stepped inside. her hands were full of something. On the very top of what she was holding was food. Under that was a bundle of fabric. he didn't know what it was but he was sure it was clothing. Although, next to the dish of food was a kunai. When she set everything down and grabbed the weapon, his body tensed. His eyes watched her like a predator watching prey, but she simply ignored the way he was acting and stepped behind him.

"Stand." He looked across the room. When he saw a nod, he stood, hands at his sides. His head was down, eyes to the floor, but he knew where she was every second that ticked by. She stepped closer to him and he felt her arm raise, but she didn't stab him. No, she grabbed a hold of his hair and started cutting. He watched the blond strands fall away to the floor and knew Itatchi was seething over in his cell, even if it didn't show. When she was done, he stood, stock still, as she brushed him off and used a small burst of chakra to make the hair disappear. Probably to a trash bin somewhere. Then, she walked over to the clothes and food, set the dish aside and tossed the clothes at him. "Change. Your food is here when you are ready to eat." When he looked up, he noticed Itatchi and Kisame also had clothes and food, but they both still had their hair. Yes, itatchi would be very angry about the loss of his hair.

Sakura stepped out of the cell, back turned and the cell closed, locking in place. Again, naruto looked to itatchi and again, he nodded. Stripping his tattered clothes off, Naruto placed on the fresh ones. Orange shirt and black pants. When he looked at the food, he noticed it was ramen. He simply pushed the bowel out of his cell, walked back to the shadows and sat down, going back into a meditative position.

"I never thought I'd see that."

"Nanda?"

"Naruto refusing to eat ramen." The four shinobi guarding the prisoners turned and noted the untouched bowel of food. Lee's eyes widened and he looked between Naruto and the bowel but said nothing. Neji remained as silent and stoic as ever, eyes leaving the bowel. Akamaru just laid down and licked his chops, staring at the ramen. Sakura shrugged.

"Nothing we can do about it Kiba. If he doesn't eat we will just put a tube in his stomach again and force feed him. Need him alive."

"Guess so."

"Stop talking. You all have annoying voices." They looked to the blue skinned man and noted he had inhaled his food, changed and was back to sitting in his cell, staring at them. His usual smile was gone.

"What's the matter sharkface? Got a problem with a little conversation or are there too many big words for you to follow?" Kiba laughed, Sakura smiled and Lee just glomped Kiba on top of the head.

"Stop teasing the prisoners, oh, I mean visitors."

"What was that for Lee?!"

"Enough." Neji's voice was quiet, barely there, but heard by all. Lee and Kiba stopped talking and got serious about their guard duty. Naruto's eyes never closed and when he looked at Neji, he noticed a glint of gold in the dim light of the prison. he looked to Sakura. The same glint of gold. Married? Well, they were together before he left so it was entirely possible, although, it did seem wrong when he thought about it more in depth. Someone like Neji and someone like Sakura ending up married. No. It was more probable that they were married to different people.

The four guards stood there in relative silence, doing their jobs and seemingly ignoring the prisoners, until Kisame tried to grab Lee and ended up with a completely shattered hand. Naruto had jumped to his feet, trying to get out of his cell and too Lee. Sakura watched as Naruto, not saying a word, slipped his arm through the cell bars and tried calling to chakra. A small ball formed in his palm but it simply turned into smoke and he stared at Lee, death plastered on his face.

"That's not Naruto." Everyone looked to Lee. Kiba just nodded in agreement. Sakura walked over to Naruto, grabbed his wrist and looked into his eyes.

"Of course it's not." And then she knocked him out.
