Downfall of the best laid plans or how to Mother Hen a Scarecrow
".1173...1174...1175...1176." The numbers each accompanied by a loud thud were the only sounds that travelled across the seemingly empty trainings ground. The bad weather having done little to motivate other shinobi to come and train so far away from the main nucleus of the village.
Kakashi, for his part, was on his way back to the main part of the village. He'd stayed at the memorial longer than he'd intended to, not that he had anywhere to be today. Still, food would probably be good, as he didn't have breakfast before he left. Taking a shortcut through the training ground, Kakashi stopped when he saw it was Gai who occupied it. He carefully tried to go back and go around, hoping he wasn't noticed.
However luck was not on the silver haired ANBU's side today. Just as he was inches from escaping Gai the green clad man stopped in his movements of reducing a boulder roughly the same size as himself into dust by simple application of his feet. Shaking his wet hair out of his face Gai looked up and easily spied Kakashi. Instantly a smile graced his face. "Ah my eternal rival! I'm glad to see you." He announced jovially.
Kakashi sighed in defeat. Caught. He waved at Gai over his shoulder. "Yo." he said.
Stepping away from the rock he had been working over Gai crossed over to Kakashi. "I talked to Tenten." he began his smile growing even larger. "And our treasured relationship as student and teacher has taken no damage."
"Well, that's good." Kakashi said, absentmindedly. "Good luck with that." he waved again and made an attempt to cross the training ground without further conversation.
Blithely Gai moved with him. "Are you going back to town? I was just thinking of going there myself. The rain did come as a surprise and I have to admit even the suit chafes when it's soaked." A broad hand came up to swipe at the water drops trailing over his face and pushing his wet hair out of his face while the other tugged at the saturated green fabric that clung even more indecently then usual. "We could see if the Hokage has any new missions that require our expertise and then get something to eat. My cute students are still in the hospital and I've given Tenten off for today."
Kakashi stared up at the sky for a few long minutes as they walked, silent. He finally turned to Gai, like he just realized something. "Ah, sorry? I wasn't listening."
Gai continued to smile but he flushed in frustration. "Your hip attitude again Kakashi." Taking a deep breath he repeated himself. "I asked if you wanted to check with Hokage-sama for a new mission?"
“Ah, yeah." Kakashi shrugged, feeling a soreness in his muscles shoot up his back. He had pulled something last time, he was sure. Well, it was either from a mission, or sex with Gai. Ugh, mustn’t think about sex with Gai. "May as well."
"Can we make a quick detour to my flat? I need to get out of the suit, it's getting rather uncomfortable." In fact the green suit, probably through a combination of having been washed once to often and the steady downpour it had suffered the last few hours, was sliding and twisting around Gai's body as he moved. The collar was in the process of stretching far enough that one shoulder was almost bare underneath the vest. "Maybe I should consider a new material...something that repels water better." Gai mussed tugging at a fold on his upper thigh.
Kakashi shrugged at Gai's statement. "I can just meet up with you at the tower, too." He said. After all, going to Gai's place... might not be such a good idea, he knew that. Especially if it involved a naked Gai.
Still oblivious Gai shook his head sending drops of water flying. "I can make us a cup of tea before we leave again. It's just the right weather for it. Or maybe some coffee if you'd like." He beamed at Kakashi as if willing the other man to agree with him through the brightness of his smile. "We could get something to eat too. I've heard there's a good shop that sells cake and stuff you might like near by."
"I need to change clothes, too, though." Kakashi said. "So it'd just be more convenient to head our separate ways and meet up at the Kage's tower. Besides, I'm not hungry."
Kakashi lied through his teeth. some breakfast would be terribly nice, but he was determined.
Rolling his eyes Gai snorted. "Do I look like I want to spend yet more time getting another suit soaked waiting for you?" He folded his arms, his eyes stubbornly drilling into Kakashi. "I still have the clothes you lent me. You can change into those."
...Well, Kakashi couldn't really complain more, otherwise he'd start looking desperate for an escape.
"Fine, fine." he sighed, waving a hand at Gai. Very well, he'd spend time with Gai, but he wouldn't like it.
Triumphant Gai quickly lead the way to his flat, eager to get out of the wet suit. Finally there he unlocked the door and ushered Kakashi in then slipped off his sandals and literally raced into the bathroom, returning with enough towels to smoother both of them. Handing half to Kakashi he tugged off his leg warmers and opened the knot of his forehead protectors. "Would you like a cup of tea then?" he asked, slightly muffled by the towel thrown over his head.
Kakashi began to undress as well, towelling off while making sure to not look at Gai. He shrugged again in response. "If you're making it."
The towel bobbed in a positive answer and Gai moved towards the kitchen, but suddenly changed his course and vanished in his bedroom. A muffled thump later he returned, Kakashi's spare clothes clutched in one hand the other rubbing the back of his head and his suit pulled down to his hips . "I washed them already, so they are clean." He explained while offering them to the other man.
Kakashi took the clothing mutely, just nodding in thanks. Well, changing right there was not an option, it might give Gai the wrong ideas. Instead he headed into Gai's bathroom without another word to him, closing the door behind him before he started to undress.
Gai quickly shed his wet body suit and wrapped it into the wet towel he had used for his hair. After putting on the water for their tea he headed towards his bedroom to get dressed again, the sudden shift in the weather having made his apartment feel rather chilly. Pulling out a newer suit from his closet he moved closer to the bathroom door. "What kind of tea do you want?"
Kakashi pursed his lips behind his mask as he considered that question. "...Whatever you have." he finally called back, deciding an exact answer would probably give away too much.
Hopping on one leg, trying to pull the tight fabric over his still not completely dry leg Gai, nodded. "OK. Do you want sugar or milk with it?"
"Milk." Kakashi answered after a moment. "...and sugar." damn him and his sweet-tooth.
"OK." Giving up on his suit as long as he wasn't at least a bit drier Gai wound a towel around his waist and returned to the kitchen to finish the preparations for their tea. A minute later the kettle whistled and he poured the hot water into the cups inhaling the smell of freshly brewed tea before adding the milk and sugar to Kakashi's, taking his own without. "The tea is ready," he called back settling on one of the bar stools at the counter separating the kitchen from the living room.
Not being able to hide in the bathroom any longer once he was fully dressed, and stepped back out to get his tea.
He had to bite his tongue at the sight of a mostly-naked Gai, but managed to avoid any embarrassing sounds or movements. "Mm. smells nice." he commented, pulling up a stool to sit as well.
Pushing Kakashi's cup over to him Gai nodded. "It was my sister's favourite blend. It's perfect for less youthful days such as this one. She used to mix it herself, but one of the shops in the centre sells a blend similar enough." Closing his eyes he sipped at his tea, savouring the taste.
Kakashi remembered Gai's story of his sister, how he'd gone through such similar tragedies and still managed to remain warm and open. Well, that helped a little, as Kakashi found a feeling of resentment grow at that thought. He sipped the tea, thoughtfully.
Shooting a glance at Kakashi's profile Gai frowned at the other man. It was so hard to tell what he was thinking with the mask and the forehead protector obscuring his face like that. Finishing his tea he turned on his seat to face his rival. "Kakashi? Is something wrong?" Worry replaced the enthusiasm usually in his voice.
Kakashi glanced over to Gai after pulling his mask up again. "...Why would something be wrong?"
Gai shrugged. "You just seem different...Somehow more tense." He regarded Kakashi thoughtfully. "Maybe you're getting sick..." Without another thought he reached out to pull off the forehead protector.
Kakashi leaned back to get out of Gai's reach, but the other man had already grasped the metal plate and the forehead protector only loosened with the action, the loose knot slipping undone. "...I'm fine." he insisted.
"Sure you are..." Depositing the forehead protector carefully on the counter Gai reached out again this time with both hands, one catching Kakashi's chin, the other testing his temperature.
Kakashi sighed, letting Gai do as he would. It was pointless arguing. And, although he would never admit it, his forehead was slightly warm under Gai's hand. He had not been taking care of himself much recently, which was a big mistake during the rainy season.
Pulling his hand away Gai frowned and leaned closer to Kakashi until they were only inches apart, pressing his forehead to the other man's to make double sure that he hadn't imagined the raised temperature.
"Oi. What are you doing?" Kakashi stared into Gai's face, eyes half-lidded and lazy. His forehead WAS warm.
"Taking your temperature." Gai retorted as he pulled away. "You are feverish, no wonder you seemed slightly off." Kneeling he opened one of the lower cupboards and started to root through it. "You are in no state to go on a mission right now. Do you have anything for a cold at your place?"
"I'm not sick." Kakashi said blandly. "So, no. I only buy medicine when I need it."
Looking up from where he was kneeling virtually at Kakashi's feet Gai nevertheless managed to bring the full force of his ‘You're an imbecile-look’, normally reserved for especially trying day with his students, to bear. "You are feverish Kakashi. If you're not sick yet you will be soon, just accept that I know what I'm talking about, will you."
“Fine, fine. I'm sick." he leaned against the table, eyes starting to close. "Are you going to take care of me, then?"
Apparently not finding what he had been looking for Gai rose again, his towel slipping dangerously. Looking Kakashi over he sighed. "Would that be so bad?"
Kakashi's eyes drifted down to where Gai's towel was riding scandalously low. But he would remain strong. He would have to.
"No. Your bed is comfortable."
"Let's put you to bed then, that way you can rest while I'm out. I need to buy a few things and tell Hokage-sama that we're not going to be available for missions for a few days." Tugging at Kakashi's arm Gai offered his support to get the other man to the bedroom.
Kakashi considered his options in that course of action, and shrugged. "Okay." after all, an absent Gai would be a Gai who was not tormenting him.
Once Kakashi was securely sitting on the edge of Gai's bed the owner of said bed nodded in satisfaction before turning away to once again grab the green suit he had selected earlier and used the towel slung over his shoulders to rub his hair dry, the slight discolorations on his neck still standing out against the rest of his skin. "Is there anything specific you want from the shops?"
Kakashi leaned back on Gai's bed, thinking of that offer.
"...Something sweet." he said, before he stripped down to the minimum amount of clothing he could and climbed into the bed.
Gai sighed and tugged the towel off from around his waist to hang both of them over a hook to dry, "Something sweet. Ok. Are you allergic to any kind of medicine?" Utterly shameless and unconcerned he bent over so he could pull the neck of the jumpsuit apart to step into it.
Kakashi appreciated the view from his place on the bed with his one visible eye. "Mm, none that I know of." he said. Actually, as soon as he laid down he began to feel tired. Gai's bed WAS rather comfortable.
Tugging the fabric up his legs and over his hips much like a giant green pantyhose Gai squirmed trying to get comfortable before slipping his arms through the sleeves and pulling it the rest of the way up. "I'll be back soon. You should get some sleep so that your youthfulness can fight the illness."
"Mmm." Kakashi nodded just vaguely. "Whatever." he soon found himself in the embrace of sleep, before Gai even finished getting dressed.
Slipping back into his Jounin vest and a new pair of legwarmers Gai turned to ask Kakashi yet more questions but stopped with a smile as he saw the copy-nin asleep, buried under his covers. Creeping closer he straightened one of the blankets with slow and careful movements, avoiding to wake Kakashi. Finished he followed the sudden urge to press a whispery kiss to Kakashi's feverish forehead, whishing him restful dreams, before stealing out of the room to run his errands.
Kakashi, for his part, was on his way back to the main part of the village. He'd stayed at the memorial longer than he'd intended to, not that he had anywhere to be today.
