“Naruto…” he couldn’t think, couldn’t breath, it wasn’t possible. And yet, here he was, alive and in his arms.
“Naruto.” He called a little louder, shaking his shoulder to see if he’d wake. There was no response, and Sasuke was beginning to worry. The sent of blood was thick in the air, and Naruto’s clothes (if you could call them that. They looked more like the disembodied remains of a patchwork quilt.) were soaked in red. Try as he might, though, Sasuke couldn’t seem to find his friends wound.
“ungergg…” Sasuke looked up quickly form his quest for the missing injury, shocked and relieved to meet with guarded cornflower blue.
“Naruto…” he looked scared, no terrified. His chest was heaving with labored breaths, and his eyes were just two steps to the right of wild. Sasuke was sure that had he been able, he would have bolted by now.
“Naruto,” he ventured, “It’s ok. It’s me, Sasuke, don’t be afraid, your safe here.” He held out his hand, intending to offer comfort. And he snatched it back with a curse, when he was bitten for his efforts.
“God Damnit, Dobe! What the hell’s the matter with you?!” There was no answer as Naruto’s panicked breathing bordered on hyperventilation, before evening out abruptly as he slid into unconsciousness once more.
“That’s it Dobe, your going to the hospital.”
Sasuke lifted him gently, and cradled him to his chest as if he were made from the finest porcelain. Adjusting him slightly so that his now bleeding hand had a better grip, he leapt into the trees and sprinted off into the night

Kabuto yawned and stretched, he loved his job, but he had to admit the graveyard shift wasn’t the most entertaining one. Usually he spent the wee hours of the morning shut away in his office, doing paperwork, or more likely catching up on his sleep. But for some reason he just couldn’t seem to manage ether tonight.
It was the same feeling he got right before a Jonin* would stagger through the hospital doors. They only came in when they were damn near dead, and if by some miracle the hospital staff managed to save the lucky basterd, they could be some of the bitchiest patents. Or perhaps it was a frantic husband, with a very pregnant wife in tow. Ninja woman in labor were the Absolute WORST. Women in labor could be horrid just on principle, but ninja women? Take all that transitionary rage and add combat training and weapons expertise to the mix. He shuddered just thinking about it. He REALLY hoped that wasn’t what was making the warning bells in his head go nuts.
As if on cue, the intercom on his desk suddenly crackled to life.
“Sir, were gonna need you in the E.R. right away.” There was a note of suspended disbelief in the nurse’s voice. “You’re gonna have to see this to believe it.”
He stood, straitening his rumpled jacket before hitting the talk back button. “Right, I’m on my way.” He smiled grimly as he left his office thinking, ‘Great, Let the games begin…’
***********************************************************************
Sasuke charged through the hospital doors like a stampeding bull, only barely managing to skid to a stop before crashing into the nurse’s station. The two nurses on duty were so startled, that it took them a full minute to realize that, yes, that was indeed a human being in front of them, not some sort rampaging beast.
Miyoko, the head nurse, was the first to recover. Quickly taking stock of the situation, she sprang into action. Hitting the intercom, she informed the doctor that they had company. Then she sent the other nurse off to fetch some orderlies and to prep a room for the blond boy. With that done she started a base exam right there in reception.
“How long has he been out?” Sasuke took in the sight of the business like women, who was currently checking Naruto’s pupils with a light pen. She looked familiar but he couldn’t quite place her.
“Well?”
“Um, I’m not sure, 10 minutes give or take. He came out of it once but slid right back under.” She nodded absorbing it all for her report to doctor.
“Do you know what happened? Did you see anything to explain his condition?”
“No, he just came out of nowhere and fainted. I tried to find the wound but couldn’t.”
The nurse raised her eyebrow at that, but didn’t say anything because it was at that moment that the orderlies decided to make their appearance, running down the hall with a wrinkled Kabuto in tow. Kabuto stopped in his tracks, however, when he saw Sasuke, or to be more precise, when he saw who Sasuke was carrying.
“No way…” he shook his head. He was a doctor, he could die of shock later, right now, he had a job to do. He signaled to the two orderlies, who rolled the stretcher in front of Sasuke and then attempted to put Naruto on it, ~attempted~ being the operative word here. Sasuke, who was overcome by a sudden wave of possessiveness that he was to tired to even try to comprehend, tightened his hold on the boy, while all but gnashing his teeth at the approaching orderlies
“Sasuke, he’s not going anywhere, I promise. But we need to look him over. That’s why you brought him here, isn’t it?” Sasuke closed his eyes, letting Kabuto’s calming voice seep through the cracks of his fractured psyche. He felt himself relax and focus, and became aware of the hypnotic genjitsu. He opened his eyes and glared at the young doctor, not that it mattered much, the genjitsu had fulfilled its purpose. His clam reasoning restored, he laid Naruto on the stretcher gently, all the while sending a silent threat to Kabuto, “If any thing happens to him…”
Kabuto almost laughed before answering aloud, “I know, I know. I’m a dead man.”
Sasuke’s expression just darkened as he nodded stonily. The two orderlies started off towards an examination room and Sasuke turned with every intention of following him, when he felt the light pressure of a hand on his arm halting him.
“He seems fine for the moment.” He turned to see the nurse from before, Miyoko, standing with a standard med kit in her hands. She, gently but firmly, took hold of his left wrist and brought his left hand up for inspection. Completely ignoring the insidious glare she was getting form Sasuke for keeping him form immediately following after Naruto.
“Why don’t I patch this up while the doc works on your friend?” Sasuke was about to protest when she added, “I have a feeling your friends going to need all the help he can get when he wakes up, and the last thing you want is to get a nasty infection and be incapacitated, am I right? Sasuke-san?”
Sasuke gave her a prissy look, but followed her without too much resistance to another examination room. She sat him down on the cot before turning to fill a small basin with a mix of water and alcohol. She put the basin, a washcloth, as well as some suturing equipment on a small rolling table, and then pulled the table and a chair in front of Sasuke. He tilted his head to the side for a moment, as if thinking hard about something, before he spoke.
“Your name’s Miyoko, right?” She looked up at him surprised he said anything. Sasuke wasn’t exactly known for his vibrant conversation abilities. Then she gave a wry smile, remembering the last time she had to patch up the rather miserable looking youth.
“I’m surprised you remember, you were quite a bit more than three sheets to the wind, not to mention a serious head injury.”
“I remember you wouldn’t met me leave.” Amazingly enough, he still sounded rather petulant about that.
“You damn near had you head caved in with a barstool! Of course we wouldn’t let you leave! What kind of a hospital would let a patient, who can’t very well stand, let alone ~walk~ , leave with out so much as a Band-Aid?! Not one that I’d want to work at, that’s for sure.” She huffed in exasperation, before getting back to the matter at hand, literately.
She took his hand and bathed it in the alcohol solution with the kind of clinical tenderness that only a nurse can pull off. She gave a small triumphant smirk, however when she got to the actual stitching and he couldn’t withhold the tiny hiss of pain.
“Sadist,” He said in that same sulky tone. She actually did laugh at that.
“Damn,” She was examining the rather large bite mark, “he nailed you good, didn’t he.”
“That’s what worries me the most.” She looked up, waiting for clarification.
“He didn’t seem to…to recognize me. The way he looked at me, it was as if he’d never seen me before in his life.” She frowned for a moment, her expression dark.
“Well, I have to say, Sasuke, The years have changed you quite a bit. A lot of the villagers hardly recognize you anymore. But the fact that Naruto didn’t recognize you...I’ll be sure the doctor knows.” She finished the sutures and bandaged the hand.
“Now, if you go and tear those open, I swear I’ll have your whole arm in a cast before you can blink. Got it?” He made a small little grunt before nodding.
"Good. I assume you’ll want to spend the rest of the evening here, correct?” He nodded again.
“Fine, I’ll have a cot made up. Also, seeing how it’s Naruto you brought in with you, you’ll be wanting to make quite a few phone calls, well that’s fine too. You can use the phone at the nurse’s station. Just tell the on duty nurse I said it was fine. I have to go on my rounds now, but I’ll tell you as soon as I hear something O.K.? And try not to worry to much; Kabuto-san is a fantastic doctor, as you well know. Now scoot.” With that she gave him a tiny shove toward the nurse’s station before heading off on her rounds.
Sasuke just stood there for a moment. He was struck by how surreal everything felt. Like a part of him just couldn’t believe that this was happening. He let out a great sigh and rubbed his good palm accross his eyes and headed in the direction of the nurse’s station. ‘How in the hell am I going to explain this Sakura.’
************************************************************************
Sakura and Lee were sitting on their kitchen floor.
An hour earlier, when he had come from the guest room to find his wife just standing in the kitchen, staring at a head protector with the most stricken look he’d ever seen to grace her lovely features, he’d wanted to chase down that basterd and beat him to a bloody pulp. To yell and scream and get through that bloody thick head, that all he was doing was tearing another hole in Sakura’s already battered heart. And that’s exactly what Naruto WOULDN’T have wanted. He would have wanted everyone to remember him fondly and then get on with their lives. Lee knew that Naruto would have seriously kicked Sasuke’s ASS for even THINKING of doing what he was about to do, calling him a chicken shit coward the whole time.
But Naruto wasn’t here, and Sasuke just couldn’t handle life without him. He often reminded himself that, were it him in Sasuke’s place, he’d probably meet the same end. He let out a sigh, knowing that there was nothing to be done about Sasuke, Lee turned his attention to his suffering wife. He was unprepared for her reaction, however, when he put his arms around her. She had been still before, absolutely still, as if afraid to move. When he touched her, though, she sprang into motion, like a spring wound to tight, throwing herself bodily into his embrace, and sending them both crashing to the floor. She lay against him, shivering and shaking, clutching at him desperately and crying her anguish into his flesh.
It was too much for her, it was just too much…
First the death of Naruto, fresh in her mind due to the day’s events, and now Sasuke, Oh God Sasuke…
She loved her husband, loved him beyond comprehension with everything she was. But Sasuke was her first love and would always hold a special place in her heart. And it hurt, dear god it hurt, watching him deteriorate the way he did.
At first he seemed okay, he searched for their friend with a calm dedication. Refusing to give up hope when there was so little evidence. His reasoning, when anyone asked and he actually gave a shit enough to answer, was that Naruto would never give up on him, so why should he be any different? But over time calm dedication turned to and almost fanatical desperation. And the only time he explained himself (which was only to Sakura) he and answered with a simple “Because I have to know.”
He had started drinking a year into his search, and had stared getting into fights a month after that. After that things really started to go down hill and it had occurred to Sakura that should Sasuke find the evidence of their friend’s demise, that he most likely wouldn’t survive the experience. Ever since that day she had done the best she could to prepare for what appeared to be the inevitable. No amount of preparation could ever be enough, though, and she knew that now.
Lee and Sakura had ended up with Lee braced against the kitchen cabinets, and Sakura curled in his lap asleep. He sat stroking her hair, soothing her as she mumbled in her sleep, thinking about moving them to the bed but not feeling inclined to move just yet. And he cursed harshly under his breath as the phone rang for the second time that night, startling Sakura awake in the process. Luckily, the phone was on the counter and he was able to reach it from his current position.
Sakura grimaced and hid her face in his chest, fairly certain what THIS phone call would be about. It was earlier than expected but still...she shut her mind off, not letting herself think about it. Lee started to run his fingers through her hair again, doing his best to keep her calm as he answered the phone.
“Hello? SASUKE!?! No! No, it’s just good to hear from you. No, you didn’t wake us, why...you don’t have to apologize for leaving. We understand that you...” Sakura watched in alarm as her husbands face went surprisingly blank for a moment, “Could you...could you please repeat that? Holy shit. That’s...damn. The Hospital? Is he okay? Have you talked to him yet? Holy god, yeah, listen you sound exhausted, get some rest and let us handle that part. Yes, I’m sure. No, I won’t forget to call Kakashi and Iruka. In fact their first on my list. Alright, take care, Sasuke.”
He hung up the phone and met the Sakura’s questioning gaze, “There alive, Sakura, Sasuke AND Naruto, their both alive...”
