Chapter Two

Sakura laid in Naruto's bed, listening to pounding rain on the window, recounting events over recent years. Hindsight made things so obvious, as it always did. The little gestures Sasuke made towards Naruto, the things he said, even the intense rivalry. Especially the rivalry. She could remember the awkward times during missions that spanned over a few days, when Sasuke would make sure he always picked his spot to sleep last. He would always bed down near Naruto, not close enough to touch, but close enough to hear him breath. And always away from her.

She should probably be sadder, she realized. One of her greatest aspirations had just been thrown back in her face, in one of the most embarrassing ways possible. Losing Sasuke to another girl would have made her bitter, but at least she would know she had tried her best and lost. She could have accepted it, and eventually found happiness for the lucky couple. But now this.

She should be angrier, too. He had known about her feelings, all this time. He can't even think of females romantically, yet he let her waste away all these years, wanting the impossible. Instead of being up front and telling her his honest feelings, he had just ignored her and let her wonder.

But instead, she simply felt resigned. In a way, she had been preparing for this for a while. One could only pine for so long without beginning to wonder if it was all for naught.

She had a specific fantasy about Sasuke, one she liked to run over in her mind. She was training hard in taijutsu, trying to improve her abilities in her weakest field. Nearby was Sasuke, practicing his throwing skills against a straw dummy. She was covered in sweat, kicking against mats bound to a sprawling oak tree, when she over rotated on a spin and fell into the dust. Her knee caught a rock on the ground, leaving her with a shallow wound. In the fantasy, Sasuke turned with a concerned expression, approaching her with a linen bandage and a smile. He never spoke, but only wrapped her wound carefully, smiling kindly, letting his fingers play down her leg, down the inside of her thigh...

She shifted uncomfortably in bed. That specific fantasy was ruined for her. Just a few weeks ago, she had found herself training next to Sasuke in the nearly the exact right situation, marred only by the addition of Naruto's presence across the field. Still, Sasuke was only thirty feet away, and she let thoughts of him once again interfere with her concentration. She fell into the dirt, though not nearly as gracefully as in her fantasy, and knelt with an injured knee. A small trickle of blood wound its way down her kneecap, just like she had imagined. She had looked up, and watch Sasuke do a quick glance over at her before resuming his training. Naruto had come running across the field at full tilt, asking if she was all right. She had bit her lip, angry with herself for falling, angry with herself for hoping. As she wallowed in self-pity, she vaguely heard Naruto yelling angrily at Sasuke for not helping. “It's a light graze, barely breaking the skin. And she's a medical nin, dobe. Leave her alone.” She had looked at Sasuke, and their gazes locked. He shrugged and looked away, taking a shuriken between each knuckle of both hands again. “Honestly, you two.” he had muttered. She had fled, nursing crushed dreams and a sprained ankle, managing to make it back to her room before she had burst into tears.

Even with the unfortunate memories tied to her fantasy, it was one of her favorites. When she dared let herself, she imagined Sasuke pressing himself to her body, kissing her all over. She imagined the two of them rolling under the branches of the oak, the taste of tangy sweat from training, the feel of his skin on hers, the sounds and sights of them making love in the leaves and shadows. And now it was even more a bittersweet fantasy, filled with the remorse of loss, the unshakable knowledge it would never, ever be true.

Or could it? A treacherous thought grabbed her. She occupied the body of Sasuke's attention. As pathetic as it sounded, the upcoming month would be her only shot at ever having Sasuke to herself. A wave of temptation struck her with force she couldn't have anticipated. The ramifications of those actions were terrifying to contemplate, but what... what if? She tried to decide how the fantasy would change if she was in Naruto's body. How Sasuke's hands would be stripping off an orange jacket instead of a red dress, pulling down baggy sweatpants instead of black spandex shorts. And then... then she ran into problems on how to proceed, even mentally. As versed in physiology and anatomy as she was, she was unfamiliar with how men could even... she couldn't even bring herself to think of the word.

Her fantasies had brought uncomfortable changes to her lower regions, and she squirmed again, finally reaching her hands down under the sheets and adjusting herself manually. Her hand still rested below her waist, feeling the tent her pants made, her breathing growing erratic as her mind danced over dangerous thoughts. She brushed her hand over her length through the material of her pants, feeling a shiver of delight run down her spine. Biting her lip hard with nervousness, she reached inside the waistband, stroking the skin softly.

Her door burst open, and she yanked both hands up and out of the covers in terror. A visage of herself looking like a drowned pink rat panted back at her. “Yo.”

She lashed out at him. “Baka! You could have knocked first!”

He looked back at her angrily. “It's MY room!”

She frowned. “I could have been changing.”

He looked incredulous. “It's MY body!”

She glowered at him, not having an appropriate response. At least he didn't appear to have noticed her earlier indisgressions. Still, it would probably be best to keep her lower half under the covers for a bit, she reasoned.

He shook his hair like a wet dog, pink locks flying and water splattering out in all directions. “It's raining like crazy out there. How can you deal with all this hair? It's insane! I don't care if you think Sasuke likes girls with long hair, I'm tempted to hack at least half off.” He looked at her mournfully with wet loose locks plastered to his face and hanging over his shoulders.

“Don't you dare.” Her hair she hadn't cut except for occasional trims since she had tested for Chunnin the first time, and it hung nearly to her waist. “I'll show you how to take care of it later.”

“Which brings me to another point. I have no idea where your house is. Er... my house. Whatever.” He looked indignant. “I know you live with your parents, but I've never even met them before. I spent a while in the residential district looking for a Haruno nameplate, but...” he shrugged.

Sakura bit her lip. She avoided introducing her friends to her parents, and to her teammates especially. Sasuke came from the most prestigious clan in Konoha, and Naruto was the son of the Yondaime himself. How could she ever compete with that? Her mother moved from part time job to part time job, and her father stayed at home and drank her mother's wages. She hated her parents, but she couldn't ever express that. She knew how Naruto or Sasuke would view it. At least her parents were still ALIVE, right?

“Come on.” she said in a resigned tone, judging it safe to rise out of bed. “Let's go meet my folks.”

*****

The_Yaoi_Fairie – I love you too *heart* Twelve hours between chapters, hopefully you haven't exploded yet. I dearly hope I can keep up this pace.

^^ - Hehehe. Glad to see you're enthusiastic. All of your questions will be addressed, I pwomiseeee!

DeadUchiha – I'll send you an email every time I update this story, I promise. Until you tell me to stop spamming you, that is ^_^ And gods, I'd hate to think what would happen if I set up this much plot and zero action, then claimed it was a one shot. Worry not, dear. Much more is to come.

And yes, my biggest worry is that people will get confused when I talk about 'Naruto's pink locks of hair'. But hopefully it’s reading sensibly for you. If not, make sure to tell me.

P.S. A fan *glee* *heart*

shuchan – Yay, my first flame response from the Naruto fandom! Worry not, I don't mind criticism. NaruSasu shippers are so cute. Sorry that my story isn't EXACTLY like the other four thousand other NaruSasu stories on AFF ^_^;;;

Tsuki Ame – I bash Sakura when she deserves it, because she is an over emotional character. But deep down, I love her dearly. Twist in unexpected ways? Who.. me? *innocence*

lje – Hrm... well, without giving too much away, you're fairly close to where I'm headed ^_^ Just have to read and find out!

AMMENDIUM: So many *glomps* to DeadUchiha for pointing out my typos. If I wasn't in such a rush to get out chapter two, it would have been better proofread, but such is life, ne?
