Chapter Two: I Will Never Forget Your Memory
************************************************

Our laughing voices danced along the wind
The glittering sunset was a promise for tomorrow

I found you just as the moon began to shine
A transient dream of a faded age

Even the peace is broken over and over again, never to return
The overflowing hatred burns this night to its core...

The murmur of the forest is a gentle song
Just for a fleeting moment, it's a happy dream

Even in the freezing pain, I still remember kindness
If you can erase everything, than I don't even need this heart

But if you want this inflamed flesh
Then I give it all to you

Just make sure to never forget this sadness
By tracing over the marks of those tears with a knife

The shimmering heat floating in the dawn sky
Smiling, you are there next to me

He had come full circle to this place . . . . where the insatiable madness
ended with all its ties of crimson anguish, slashed to ribbons by his grief.

A cool gentle breeze ruffled Hatake’s silver hair as a cloud of
cherry blossoms swept by his face, tickling his nose.
His brow clenched in contemplation he sat perched lightly upon
an ivory tombstone that had been weathered by time,
his arms crossed stoically as he gazed at the inscription
that seared into his heart, tearing into his soul with shuddering tormentuos guilt.

A single tear slipped down his cheek.

The sky burnt with the blazing colors of sunset, wind
whispering through the graveyard like a suggestive voice full of malice.

Hatake’s features darkened visibly as he solemnly gazed upon the final resting
place of the only person who had truly known the machinations of his heart.

He had . . . . been happy once. His features twisted in aggravated sorrow as he tried
to place the feeling in his mind, but to no avail. It slipped through his grasp like a
wispy fog, only to dissipate and leave him with the razor edged feeling of defeat.

He . . . . couldn’t remember how it felt to be happy. The feeling had gone just as he
had. One day he had been there, smiling, alive. And the next . . . gone.
Sometimes Kakashi felt it was as if Obito had never existed in the first place,
but had been nothing more than another shattered dream, taken away from him.

Obito . . . . All his fault . . . .

Kakashi sighing held his face in his hands. He was responsible for everything.
Yes, he knew he could not deny the voices that screamed for vengeance in his heart,
the cruel truths they whispered to him when he was awake at night.

He wished that he could tear it all away from him and yet, he knew in his heart
that he could never forget the only one who had known him for what he truly was.
How could you deny the one person who had seen you in all your actions, both good
and bad, and accepted you for what you were? No, he couldn’t.

Just as the wind would surely blow, Hatake would surely never forget his memory.

It was that one single instant where time had stood still in the moment,
and all that had mattered had been the two of them in this world,
staring each other down as they gazed deep within the congenial souls of one other.

For a time, Obito had been all that had mattered. To him.

For a time.

But all things must change, and they must be accepted, or so many had told
Kakashi when his world had gone spinning out of control and he had fallen into
an insufferable hell of his own creation.

When Obito had died.
And he knew it was all his fault, there was no escaping the truth.
Sighing Hatake leapt up spontaneously, landing upon a soft bed of leaves
as he strode away purposefully,
wondering if he could ever forgive himself for what he had done.

*******************************************************************************

“Over here you baka!” small children playing in the street yelled cheerfully
at the big kid throwing mud balls at them. Kakashi smiled halfheartedly,
remembering when he was young. He’d always been the boy that everyone
had admired and looked up to. He recalled how people had looked upon him
with warm eyes alit with an inner fire, always relying on him and looking towards
him for the answers their hearts sought. And yet somehow he felt as if he were
living a half life, as if he no longer had that admiration of others, the only thing
that kept him sane at times.

A warm sunbeam fell upon his closed eyes and he sighed softly,
recalling memories he wished he had forgotten.
Memories of a cold day with gray clouds, of sorrow and a fight he could not forget,
Zabuza’s hatred for Hatake burning a torpid hole into his heart.
How naïve he had been, his brows furrowed together and fists clenched.
How baka and naïve! And to still be thinking of it, being sustained only by memories
was a trivial place, to still not own himself!

Why did he even bother to waste his time thinking about the pain, the ache, the loss?
These thoughts were of no use, only awakening further torment he wish he could
tear out from his heart yet all the same a part of him was glad that these memories
were still sustained with his emotions, feelings that would never dissipate yet left him
a former shell of himself and the sweet mortal agony of it was almost too much to bear.

What was he really? A decadent shade that was sustained on memories alone?
Would he be forever damned to desire the one thing that caused his insides to
eat at one another like famished snakes, desecrate his soul, and destroy his feeling of self?
And yet without that one thing he knew he was nothing but a tired joke.
He wore his jovial facade like an overused mask that was soon in danger
of slipping away entirely to reveal the broken shattered man beneath.

The warm scent of meat buns and curry rice tickled his nose as he walked
along the road, wagons drawn by cream colored oxen that shuffled by,
bakers setting their goods on trays to tempt the afternoon’s customers.

Looking at his watch, Kakashi clicked his tongue and sighed in distaste.
The first time in known history when he was actually ON TIME and did those
ninjas show up?
Damn that idiot Naruto and that aloof Sasuke! Meet him at 1:00 PM by the docks!
Were they there, nooooooo . . . . they were probably off somewhere making out
with some worthless hussies.

‘Vigor is wasted on the young….’ Kakashi toyed idly with his black bandages as the thoughts
of dismembering certain little ninjas came to mind. ‘Well,’ he pondered,
‘There’d be time for pain later, heh heh heh,’ he bantered, entertaining the thought.

Of course, unskilled baby assassins weren’t much of a challenge at all;
but the mere thought of it entertained him grandly,
as he sauntered down the street towards the bars – hoping to get so flat-out
wasted he would have to crawl all the way back to “The Mizu Inn” and it would
take him two days to get there, ‘tee hee’.

Ivory hair gleaming as he strode down the street, Hatake never realized
just how closely he was being watched.

A tall figure dressed in jet black robes peeked cautiously out from the earth’s belly,
eyes gleaming maliciously as sin while the owner was careful not to let any light down upon himself.

“Ah Kakashi,” it whispered softly, a youthful voice full of innocence, but only to the untrained eye. “Cherish your life, for I promise you, it will not last for long.” A shameless smile spread to the corners of his mouth as he disappeared as if he had never been there in the first place, swallowed up by the earth.
