Chapter 2: Safety for Now

Black hair dangled in the wind with each swift movement that Naruto had made. Within his grasp was the food and Sasuke. He knew that he needed to get Sasuke somewhere safe for the moment, he cared nothing for himself. Those blonde locks danced about his forehead as he steadied himself, making way to the cave he knew was somewhere around here.

Even within the blackness, Sasuke could feel relief. There was no more constriction around his neck and that made him happy. Though through the haze, he could see one person and one person alone. It was Naruto. He was holding him tightly against his chest, trying to keep him safe.

Panting from the excursion from carrying another person, Naruto started to feel like his strength was weakening. That was something he didn't want to happen, not here, not now. Closer and closer he edged, seeing trees about him that he recognized.

"Almost there, Sasuke." He muttered underneath his breath as he bolted towards the cave. His ears twitched as he heard some more brush moving about. 'Crap.. they're on to me I bet...' He thought in his head as he looked around suspiciously. Naruto knew that they would be on to him, but he thought he would have had more time.

"I think he went this way!" A voice echoed behind him, making him grunt a bit. In the distance he saw that the trees were starting to open up towards a small glade. 'There it is...' Yet he knew that he wouldn't get there on pure speed alone. At that moment, Naruto remembered something he had learned when he was taught how to control his chakra. With a smirk on his face, he gathered up all of his chakra to his feet, before he let it loose. The force of chakra there exploded, sending him hurtling forward into the cave, though it knocked Sasuke a few feet away from him.

A few new scraps appeared on his face as he landed, skidding slightly on the rock ground, but he couldn't let that stop him. Pushing himself to his feet, he started to perform seals to hide himself and Sasuke for the moment. With the last one in place, he closed his eyes and concentrated on the ground in front of the cave entrance, letting up stones that would hide it from the ANBU eyes.

"Where did you say he was?"

"Over there! I saw him disappear into that direction."

"Yet he isn't there."

"Just keep searching, alright?"

"Alright."

His breathing was shallow now, he didn't know what to do in this situation. Though he came here to try and get Sasuke back, he never thought he'd become a traitor by trying to save him. Trying to get a hold of himself before he finally collapsed into that chasm of insanity, he laid back against the wall, to take a look at Sasuke.

Sasuke's body was slowly breathing now, though he hadn't stirred one bit. Naruto knew he was out like a light. Naruto finally decided to take a look at his body, to see what had hurt him the most. Taking in that he had scraps all along his legs, and his arms, he saw no broken bones or anything along those lines. "Good. I can still keep running." Yet he winced for a moment, something ached worse than all of the scraps combined. It was something inside of his gut, twisting and turning about. He couldn't remember why is was like this, but he tried to forget it.

Pushing himself off of the wall, he walked over to look at Sasuke's body, wanting to make sure that he was alright. Naruto frowned as he saw the ripped clothing, alond with the multitude of scraps along his body. "Sasuke... I..." He couldn't finish, as his eyes drooped low. Looking back up at the wall, he sighed to himself. "I will protect you..." The words seemed to now pour themselves out of his mouth, making him chuckle. Walking back over to the other side of the wall, he rested his back against it to sit down and rest. "Stupid me... Always trying to be the hero..." His eyes closed a bit, as he fell asleep, though still staring at the ground in front of him.

Onyx eyes stared out inot the darkness, trying to decipher where he was. Through the blackness around him, he concluded that he had died and was in the next world, until he heard another faint breathing. 'That isn't me...' He said to himself, though he couldn't find the voice within him to say it aloud. Turning his body to face upwards, he stared at the ceiling. 'Rocks...' Scanning around, he tried to make sense of how he got here. Yet as he tried to, his side began to hurt, pulsating pain shot through his body to make him wince. Looking to that side, he found a large open wound that had stopped bleeding, but hurt so much.

But that faint breathing continued to go out of synch of his own, still making him believe he wasn't alone. 'One of the ANBU?' He quickly dismissed that thought as he remembered that the ANBU wanted him dead. Turning a bit more, along with wincing in pain, he took a look at who had brought him here. Though as he looked, his breath became shallow again, like something was trying to strangle him. He stared at the black shirt, within the darkness, still unknown of who it was. It was until he brought his onyx eyes down to the pants. Those bright orange pants. "Na...ruto" His mouth leaked out the words as he stared at the boy who had saved him.

Sasuke wanted to go and see Naruto's body, or at least go next to him, thank him for what he had done for the black-haired ninja, though he had to pull himself over to the blonde. His feet were still a bit numb, and useless at this moment, but he didn't care. Inch after excruciating inch, his body moved on the ground, rubbing sore scraps against the rough surface below him. Finally, though, he reached the boy, pulling himself up to the left side of Naruto, he peered out at the rock wall in front of him. He couldn't help but chuckle a bit as he started to remember how it was Naruto who had saved him from death, only to become like him.

Leaving his head over a bit, Sasuke place his lips on Naruto's cheek, and kissed him. He knew that even doing this he could be hunted down, but under the current circumstances, he really didn't care. Pulling back, he looked at the wall again, before placing his head down on Naruto's shoulder. "I'll see you when you wake up, dobe."
