Chapter two
:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:
Gaara awoke to the startling chill of early morning and the intense light of the sun filtering through the trees. It took him a while to realize what had happened, until he felt the cold metal on his wrist. He looked down to see what it was and was a little suprised to see a soundly sleeping Hinata cuddling into him. Memories of the previous night flooded back to him, and mixed emotions surged through his head. Anger towards Hiashi, the need to protect Hinata from him, the confusion of where and what they should do, and best of all the warmth and serenity he felt when he held the woman he loved. He wrapped his arms around her a little tighter and nuzzled into her hair, taking in the scent and getting early morning dew on his face that had collected in her hair. He wanted to just stay there, leaning against the tree in each others arms, watching her sleep. She needed the rest, Gaara assumed, after seeing her condition.
She didn't have to say anything, Gaara knew. She was frequently abused by her father ever since she was very young, and Gaara would always be there for her after she had gotten away. One time when they were younger, he had even rescued her, to the result of recieving her lashing.
He had snuck into the yard as they would often meet in secrecy and saw Hiashi in one of his fits, beating Hinata through the window. It had shocked Gaara half to death, and angered him even more. He didn't think about what he was doing as he broke the window and jumped through, pushing Hiashi to the ground as he picked up Hinata and ran with her out of the window again in a blaze of adrenaline-fused strength. He had gotten her far away from the house and hid with her in an alley, cleaning the blood off her face and comforting her, until quieting her as he heard someone approaching. He hid her behind an empty crate and told her not to make a sound, regardless of what was happening. Hinata covered her ears and closed her eyes in a silent agreement as Gaara distanced himself.
Hiashi had been looking for them and turned into the alley where they were. He hadn't noticed Hinata, and glared at the boy he recognized as the one that had broken in.
"Where did you take Hinata?" he asked.
Gaara stood his ground and looked him straight in the eyes.
"I don't know," he said sarcastically.
"Don't play with me boy," Hiashi said, approaching him.
"Why were you doing that to Hina-chii?" he asked.
Hiashi stopped and looked at him. They were only four feet away from each other now.
"Why?" Hiashi said, laughing. "That girl...she's worthless, can't you see that?"
Gaara scowled.
"Oh? Why are you so shaken over it? It's not like I was hitting you, or do you want me to prove your worthlessness too?" Hiashi lunged forward and caught Gaara by the neck.
"You're going to regret breaking my window...but if you tell me where Hinata is, perhaps I can overlook the fact that I was pushed down as well."
"I'd push you down again and again," he said, glaring into Hiashi's eyes. "I'm not telling you."
Gaara grabbed Hiashi's wrists and pulled himself up to kick him in the stomache. Hiashi lifted him out and held him away before the contact was made, and threw him against the wall.
Hinata flinched as she heard what was going on and bit herself to stop the cries that were daring to escape. Gaara and Hiashi were fighting, and everytime she heard Gaara scream, she bit down and flinched a little harder.
When she heard the sickening sound of something snapping, her eyes shot open and she bit down so hard that blood flowed fast from the wound she had steadily formed. She was trembling, but Gaara told her not to be mute, so she let her wound bleed all over her and the tears soak her clothes. She was silent the whole time, even as she heard another snap and sunk her teeth in further.
Gaara wasn't one to give up, and the mass amount of adrenaline that flowed through him masked the pain. He had broken one of Hiashi's ribs, and in turn, Hiashi had broken his left arm.
He struggled up from the ground and lashed out again as he was kicked, knocking him down to the dirty streets. He lay there curled in a defensive position and coughed up blood as Hiashi lowered his face to his ear.
"I'll find her," he said simply, and walked away.
Five minutes after Hinata had heard her father leave she ran over to Gaara, who was still curled, and hugged him lightly while she cried over him. Eventually, she was able to help him to his feet and to a hospital.
She'd taken up studying medicine since then, and the scar on her wrist could still be seen on her wrist.
He lightly rubbed the bruise on her face. 'No...' he thought. 'We should be moving.'
He gently shifted Hinata and shook her awake. Her eyes shot open and she looked around warily, as she did every morning. She relaxed as she saw Gaara, and leaned into him again.
"Hinata." he said, "we need to be moving if you don't want your father to find us."
She shot up. "How long have we been sleeping!?" she asked, slighlty panicking.
"I'm not sure."
"H-he said h-he was waking up early today! For the trip! He's looking for me! I know he is!" She stood up and pulled Gaara with her. "We have to run! He could be anywhere, he could have people looking for me!" She spun around, surveying the area around her.
"Hina-"
Hinata put her hand over his mouth and stood completeley still. She had heard something.
She grabbed his hand and pulled him down behind a thick cedar. Gaara removed her hand and looked at her.
She was focusing intently on an area not far from where they just were. She glanced at him, and shook her head slowly side to side.
Her hand gripped Gaara's shirt as she heard her father's voice.
"Anything?" Hiashi asked.
"Nothing so far, sir," she heard one of the family guards reply.
She hid her head in Gaara's chest and held tighter to his shirt. She felt him run his hand through her hair.
"Send the guards to circle the perimeter a mile around from this area. I'll head back to check the city again."
"Yes, Hiashi-sama," the guard replied, saluting.
Hinata rose and pulled Gaara up with her, still hidden behind the cedar tree. Hiashi was out of sight now, and she copied the guards movement, moving when he did. Gaara did the same, and they managed to stay out of sight as the guard continued in the opposite direction of them. After some minutes of waiting, Hinata pulled him back towards the city.
"Hinata!" Gaara exclaimed under his breath. "Your father said he'd be there."
"The gate out is outside of the city limits," she explained. "If we can get there we can go to the next town."
He followed unquestioning as they headed towards the gate in silence. They got to the road and Hinata quickened the pace, excited at seeing the giant red pole of the gate, their goal, their freedom. She smiled and squeezed Gaara's hand as they approached. Even Hinata didn't expect her father to be waiting for them, hidden by the pole's view...
She passed the pole and saw something white flash as she was pushed to the ground. Gaara had pushed her out of the way as her father had tried to what seemed like tackle her to the ground. She looked up behind her in horror to see them fighting - again.
Gaara was pinned to the ground and Hiashi drew back to punch again as he turned over, forcing him off. He quickly stood up and turned to face Hiashi as he got into a fighting stance.
Hiashi laughed as he stood and looked at him.
"Oh, it's you again, is it?"
Gaara was silent, a solmen concentrated expression gracing his features.
"Remember what I did to you in that alley those years ago? I'll do it again."
Silence.
Hiashi laughed and stepped forward.
Of course he remembered what happened. He had nightmares of it all the time, each one with himself not being able do do anything as he lay there beaten, as the screams of Hinata being totured floated through the air. He winced inwardly.
Gaara waited for movement. As soon as Hiashi moved, he struck, hitting him as Hiashi countered by elbowing him in the side. Gaara stumbled back, and he got into position again.
Hinata got up and pushed her father, causing him to stumble. Hiashi's attention shifted and he thrust out at her, flinging her to the ground again as Gaara attacked the spot he left open.
Hiashi noticed the glint of something metallic on the crimson as he lunged forward at him again.
Gaara dodged it and and felt a pull on his wrist as the bracelet was pulled with enough force to make it break and come off.
Hiashi stepped back and examined it.
"Filth," he said to Gaara, "you steal from the Hyuuga's?"
His glare remained unbroken, his face unchanging.
"Love?" Hiashi said as he glanced over the hirigana. "I see, you stole this because you wanted to feel loved." Hiashis hand loosened, and pieces of the broken links fell to the ground.
"No one will ever appreciate someone as disgusting as you."
Hinata ripped the kanji necklace off and hid it in her bra upon seeing this. She knew that her father would do the same thing to her, and she was not going to lose her memories...
Gaara saw this and a sick understanding fell over him. He knew what Hinata was thinking, and he looked longingly at her. Hiashi was still eyeing the bracelet and Gaara looked at Hinata. His face read "You don't have to, please."
Hinata began to tear as she saw the sadness reflected in his eyes. They could read each other perfectly, as usual.
She smiled reassuringly as the first tear fell, and she brushed it away.
"Stop," she said, her voice unusually crisp and clear. "I'll go. I'll do what you want, just don't hurt him anymore."
Hiashi complied without sound, to both of their surprise, and forcefully slung Hinata over his shoulder like luggage.
Hinata was in a position where Hiashi could not see her face. She bit her lip and closed her eyes tight before meeting his gaze again.
Gaara could see the tears stream down her face and she mouthed,
"You will be the only one I ever love, always."
Gaara's hand gripped the fabric of the shirt around his chest, a habit that he hadn't acted on since he was four, before he met Hinata. The familiar ache of loneliness setteled in just as he remembered it, and he felt something he hadn't in years. He was crying, silently his face emotionless, but tears slid down regardlessly. Hinata was only protecting him , he knew, and forced himself not to run after her. Hiashi would only start the process over, and it could go on forever, Gaara not stopping until the life was beaten from him.
He would stop at nothing to find her again.
