~Chapter One~
Tsunade got a strange, uneasy feeling when she remembered the fact that she had expected the ‘brat,’ as she had nicknamed him, to be back in Konoha long before that day. /Heck, I thought he’d be here at least a week ago, if not two/
“No offence, Hokage-sama, but you should know that Naruto of all people takes being a shinobi very seriously. Considering the fact that if you hadn’t threatened him, he wouldn’t have gone on vacation at all,” Kakashi sat on one of the chairs in front of the Hokage’s desk.
Tsunade sighed and rubbed her temples, feeling the beginnings of a headache.
“Gods, don’t remind me,” she grimaced as she remembered the day she had . . . ‘convinced’ Naruto to take the month-long vacation.
:Flashback:
Tsunade was sitting in her office, calmly staring into the bright blue eyes, angrily narrowed at the moment, of a certain foxy shinobi.
“I don’t want a vacation, Tsunade-hag! I’m perfectly fine!” he yelled at her, at the top of his lungs. He’d been repeating the same thing for at least an hour, to no avail.
“Brat, you are going to take this damned vacation whether you want to or not, because you need it,” she carefully kept the concern out of her voice and face.
She couldn’t, however, hide the way her eyes flitted up and down his fragile-looking frame, taking in the shadows under his eyes, and the sluggishness of his movements due to lack of sleep.
She knew he’d been having nightmares about the deaths of missing-nin Zabuza and his subordinate, Haku, along with Orochimaru’s attempt to have Sasuke defect from Konoha.
And the only reason she knew that was because she had forced it out of him on the fourth consecutive night she had seen him at the top of the Hokage Mountain.
“And what if I refuse to take this vacation, you hag?” She was brought, quite rudely, out of her musings when Naruto voiced his final question.
She smirked as she pulled out her metaphorical ‘ace up the sleeve.’ “Then I’ll just suspend your ninja license for an indefinite amount of time,” she hoped this would convince the young blockhead to give in.
Naruto’s eyes widened and he had a disbelieving expression on his face. “You wouldn’t!” he tried to scream, but it came out as a half-strangled whisper. When he saw the expression on her face, he paled slightly. “Geez, you would…fine I’ll take a stupid vacation.” he grumbled.
Tsunade relaxed and smiled. “Good. Kakashi will escort you to Rakite Village,” she looked at the clock. “You should go get ready now, brat, because you’re leaving in two hours,” she smirked a little when he glared at her and left her office.
:End Flashback:
She was snapped out of her memories when Kakashi cleared his throat. “Yes, well…what was the question again?” She reached for her sake once more, while most of Team Seven face-faulted. Sasuke’s left eyebrow had begun to twitch.
“We want to know why Naruto isn’t back yet,” Tsunade looked at the raven-haired teen thoughtfully before answering.
“I don’t know,” she then turned to Kakashi. “You did tell him to take the same route back that you used to get him to Rakite, right?” she questioned.
The silver-haired jounin rubbed the visible portion of his face. “Of course I did. I even gave him a map with specific instructions on how to get back here to Konoha.”
The blonde woman couldn’t shake off the feeling of dread that had crept into her heart. “Well, I can’t do anything about him now,” she held up her hand when she saw Sakura was about to protest.
“We’ll wait two days. If he isn’t back by then, we’ll send out a search party. Dismissed.”
Team Seven hesitated for a moment, wanting to send out the search party at once. But a glare from the Hokage swiftly sent them out the door.
Once they stepped out of the Hokage Tower, Kakashi disappeared in a poof of smoke and the two genin were left to their own devices. Sakura thought back to their first Chuunin Exam, and the events that followed.
“Ne, Sasuke?” the ebony-haired teen turned at the sound of his teammate’s voice. He wasn’t offended at all by the lack of an honorific after his name. “What do you think would have happened if Naruto hadn’t stopped you two months ago?”
He too thought back to two months prior. “Honestly? I probably would have gone with Orochimaru and you would still be obsessed with me,” he answered with a slight smirk.
To any passerby who saw or heard Sasuke as he spoke to the pink-haired kunoichi, they would have thought his voice and expression were cold and indifferent.
Sakura and Naruto, however, had learned how to read the stoic Uchiha more
accurately than those who didn’t know him. At the moment, for example, Sakura saw Sasuke looking at her warmly, with worry for their friend lurking deep in the bottomless depths of his eyes.
“Well, then. I guess it’s lucky Naruto did manage to, almost literally, drag you back home,” here, her smile transformed into a teasing smirk. “I guess we should think up a new nickname besides ‘dead-last,’ huh?”
Both she and Sasuke knew that Sakura was rambling, but neither wanted to mention it, because they didn’t want to think about why she was rambling. Sasuke answered her with a quiet ‘yeah.’
During their conversation, they had not stopped walking, and had reached Sakura’s house. The pink-haired kunoichi turned to fully face the last loyal Uchiha and stood on her tiptoes to kiss his forehead.
Sasuke allowed the sisterly show of affection, because they both knew Sakura had no romantic feelings for him whatsoever.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Sasuke,” she waved and disappeared into her home. Sasuke turned and kept walking.
The raven-haired genin eventually reached the deserted Uchiha compound. Wandering around aimlessly, he relived old memories, before deciding to head to the main mansion where he lived.
After making himself a small, simple dinner in the large kitchen, Sasuke headed upstairs, past dusty, unused rooms, until he arrived at the door to his bedroom. He showered in the adjoining bathroom and dressed in a pair of comfortable black PJ pants, deciding to forgo underwear, and climbed into bed.
Both Sasuke and Sakura had troubled dreams that night. Not surprisingly, they all revolved around a certain sunny-haired, bright-eyed boy. Kakashi… didn’t sleep at all. ‘You better be alright, Naruto.’
Tsunade fogged up her mind with sake, not wanting to even think about the possibility that something might have happened to her surrogate little brother. She fell into a dreamless, sake-induced slumber.
