thank you to everyone who commented on the first shot, and i hope you enjoy the second chapter. i'm not sure if there will be as many chapters as failed relationships, but that may be what happens.

enjoy!

Sweet dreams of you
Every night I go through
Why can’t I forget you
And start my life anew
Instead of having sweet dreams
About you

Naruto stared across the table at the white wall of the cafeteria. He felt like collapsing on the table and sleeping for years, as he hadn’t slept well the night before. He hadn’t slept well in a while, to be honest. Every time he closed his eyes, the night Sasuke broke up with him played itself out over and over again for him to feel that same pain. But even worse than that, some of those dreams that haunted him at night were of the good times they’d had, the love they’d shared, the bond that seemed could never be broken. Yet it had, inexplicably.

He still couldn’t comprehend why Sasuke had suddenly become so cold and threw him aside. Hadn’t they been in love? Did a lifetime of friendship and two years of requited love amount to nothing but pain in the end?

Naruto turned his head slightly, trying to catch a glimpse of the raven-haired man of his thoughts. He was where he always sat, with Shikamaru and Kiba, and Sakura and Ino trying their hardest to get his attention.

Sasuke looked like he always did, immaculate and unattainable, and Naruto was finally convinced that the other boy really felt nothing about their separation. His eyebrows furrowed as he turned his attention back to the wall. If that’s how Sasuke really felt, then it was for Naruto to do as expected of him and get over the bastard, no matter how much he still loved him.

“N-Naruto-kun?”

Naruto looked up to see Hyuuga Hinata standing next to him, a lunch tray held tightly in her hands, nearly hugged against her chest. “Hinata-chan, what’s up?” He tried his best to smile without showing his inner turmoil, but the look on her face told him he hadn’t quite succeeded.

“If this is a b-bad time…”

“Of course it isn’t, Hinata-chan,” he said a little too loudly. “Why don’t you join me? I bet you’re kind of nervous without having Neji around, huh?”

She smiled shyly before sitting next to him. “It’s not that I’m nervous. It’s just that, without Neji here, I really don’t have any connections to anyone. I feel like a stranger.”

“Don’t feel that way, Hinata! We’re all friends here! Ha, you don’t need Neji. How is he, by the way?”

Hinata smiled. “He says college is quite different from high school, but nothing he can’t handle.”

Naruto laughed. “That sounds like that arrogant jerk!” He blinked and hurried to take back what he’d said. “No, I didn’t mean that he’s a jerk, or arrogant, just-”

Hinata laughed at his flailing arms. “It’s okay, Naruto-kun. Neji is a bit too… confident, sometimes.”

Naruto let out a sigh of relief that he hadn’t offended the girl by insulting her beloved cousin. He chuckled as she laughed lightly, and Naruto found his dark thoughts about his ex-lover and his sleepless nights fading away. Hinata had an aura about her that didn’t allow for sadness, and Naruto felt his mouth stretch in a genuine smile.

We’re through, Naruto. Just forget we were ever lovers.

Naruto’s smile faltered. He looked at Hinata, her gentle smile as she recalled one of her favorite memories of Naruto’s mischievous side, the way her eyes lit up as she talked about him.

‘I think Hinata likes me. Could… could she…?’

“Hinata-chan?”

“Uh, oh, yes, Naruto-kun?”

“Would you like to do something this weekend?”

You don't love me, it's plain
I should know I'll never
Wear your ring
I should hate you
The whole night through
Instead of having sweet dreams
About you

“Dobe, how could I ever prove how much I love you?”

“That was so utterly cheesy, I’m hard pressed to believe you actually said it.”

Naruto lay wrapped in Sasuke’s arms in the blonde’s bed, the sheets tangled at their feet as their bodies tried to cool off from their strenuous activities of the afternoon. The sun was setting and throwing its golden color into his room, bathing them in its warm glow. He snuggled his head into Sasuke’s chest and sighed in contentment when he felt the rumble of Sasuke’s laughter.

“Despite that, I do love you.”

“I know, and I love you, too.”

Naruto whined as Sasuke moved away from him and left the bed. The raven-haired boy was rummaging through his things on Naruto’s dresser that never seemed to make it home. Sasuke soon returned to Naruto’s side and told him to close his eyes as he settled back into bed.

“Maybe this will help me in my dilemma.”

Naruto furrowed his brows, really wanting to open his eyes. When Sasuke grabbed his hand, Naruto’s brows rose as he felt something cold and heavy settle on his finger.

“Open your eyes, dobe.”

Naruto’s eyes shot open to take in… a dark room, soft moonlight barely filtering in through his blackout curtain. No one was beside him in the bed, and he shivered with the cold the night brought. His eyes stung with tears as they moved to take in his hand, closing them in pain when nothing glinted on his finger.

Since he was alone, Naruto allowed the tears to fall down his face. He hated going to sleep, hated the dreams that assaulted him. Yet, he loved the dreams, as well. Sure, when he woke up he was miserable, but while in the dream, he felt loved and happy and whole. The dreams were bittersweet, and Naruto couldn’t decide if he wanted to have them or not.

Rolling onto his back and wiping away the tears, Naruto turned his head to see the clock on his nightstand, sighing when it read 5:38am instead of something more manageable, like 12:00pm.

There was nothing for it, so Naruto rolled out of bed and headed for the shower. He was meeting Hinata later in the day for lunch and a movie, so he’d spend the morning trying to work on his late papers.

He still couldn’t believe he was dating Hyuuga Hinata, heiress to the Hyuuga fortune. And what surprised him even more was that in her presence, he felt good. He knew he was still hopelessly in love with Sasuke, but with Hinata, the pain was a little less, and he felt genuinely at peace sometimes.

But there were still those times when the heartache consumed him, and thinking about it wasn’t helping. As the water from the shower pounded on his weary body, Naruto felt the fatigue of stress catching up to him. So when the water finally turned cold and he stepped from the shower, instead of doing homework, Naruto set his alarm and crawled back into bed.

Sweet dreams of you
Things I know can’t come true
Why can’t I forget the past
Start loving someone new
Instead of having sweet dreams
About you

“Thank you for dinner tonight, Naruto.”

“There’s no reason to thank me, Hinata. I’m your boyfriend!”

Naruto watched as Hinata’s gentle smile faded slightly. She seemed to be thinking about something, and Naruto wished he could read her mind. For the past three weeks, they’d been happy, but lately, Naruto could sense a sadness coming from the usually serene girl.

“Are you alright, Hinata?”

“Ah, Naruto, I’ve been thinking that something’s bothering you. Would… would you mind sharing with me?”

Naruto stared at her a moment before sighing in resignation. He knew this would be coming, since his acting skills weren’t that great, but maybe talking about it would help a little.

“I was… in a long term relationship that ended recently. I guess I was too in love, and it hurts so much. But when I’m with you… it hurts a little less.”

“Naruto, I had no idea you were in a relationship.”

Naruto smiled bitterly. “It was a secret. We didn’t want anyone to know, I guess.”

“I don’t think this was such a good idea, then.” Naruto looked up in confusion, and Hinata reached for his hand to squeeze it lightly. “Naruto, I’m honored that you wanted to find solace in me, but I honestly think it’s too soon for you to try to move on. It’ll only make the pain worse.”

“But Hinata-”

Hinata was staring past him when she said, “Hello, Sasuke-kun.”

Naruto tensed and fought the urge to look in the direction she’d greeted. He didn’t want to see him. He didn’t want that cold disdain thrown in his direction, didn’t want to sit through Sasuke pretending nothing of significance had ever happened between them.

“Good evening, Hyuuga-san, Naruto.”

“What’s up, teme?” Naruto forced out, hoping he sounded a lot more confident than he felt. Sasuke didn’t look like he wanted to answer until Hinata kindly asked him what he was up to. Then he answered quietly that he was just out for a stroll.

Naruto couldn’t help but stare at the other boy, drowning in his beauty all over again. The setting sun cast a golden glow over his pale skin, and Naruto couldn’t help but recall dreams and old realities of that same glow lying in his bed, his fingers lightly tracing muscles and lines, tickling whenever he could provoke a reaction.

The next thing he knew, Sasuke was walking away, and Hinata was looking at him in sadness.

“It was Sasuke-kun, wasn’t it?”

Naruto’s head snapped up. “What?”

“You were going out with Sasuke-kun, weren’t you?” He tried to move away from her, but she grabbed onto his shirt. “It’s okay, Naruto-kun! I understand. You’ve always been close to Sasuke-kun; I’m surprised no one guessed.”

“You’re not angry, or… disgusted?”

“No, Naruto. But I do think it’s better if you wait a while longer before trying to date. No matter whom you were with, you are still in pain, and you need to recover your confidence. And if, at that time, you can still think of me, I’ll be here.”

Naruto smiled at her and pulled her into a hug. “You’re so wise, Hinata. Thank you for understanding. You’re a great friend.” He pulled back to see her blushing brightly, and he threw his head back to laugh.

‘Maybe things will gradually get better.’
