(((Chapter 2 - "Yamato Blushes")))

“Hmm..? Clearer? How so?”

Yamato looked at Kakashi and smiled. “Well, I know that you were their Jounin instructor for awhile and you are sure to know more about their time together than I could, but during the time that I led Team Kakashi to Orochimaru’s hideout which led to the meeting with Uchiha Sasuke- there was a driving force within Naruto. There was a passion that, while it could be explained as a brotherly bond- it’s just more understandable and the depth seems to match when I think back on it as a bond deeper than brothers.”

Kakashi thought back on it all. It was making sense. Back to before Sasuke left. Back before the Chuunin exams. Back before Zabuza and Haku’s deaths. Back before he could even recall knowing them. They already had some sort of deepened tie between each other when they joined Team 7. He just wasn’t sure how he hadn’t honed in on it before.

“Still, it doesn’t seem right, don’t you think Kakashi?” Yamato asked, catching Kakashi off-guard.

“what are you saying all of the sudden?”

Yamato paused. “well, I mean to say that- while the evidence leans toward Naruto having these desires for his rival that go beyond just competition, and that it goes further still past the loyal bonds of brothers, right into the realm of feeling some physical desires for him- it just doesn’t seem right. Two shinobi can’t have that sort of interference as still have teamwork. Two male shinobi? Rivals? You know what I’m saying, right?”

Kakashi blinked in confusion. Yamato had reached the conclusion first and even was the one to suggest it to Kakashi that Naruto was harboring feelings of physical need for Sasuke. Now he was suddenly questioning the feasibility?
“Tenzou, you do realize that you are questioning the very conclusion you already came to, right?” Kakashi asked him directly.

“Again with my real name! I thought you said you would pay more attention to that, honestly Kakashi I find it very hard to believe that you-“ Yamato stopped short seeing the silver haired man in front of him suddenly flipping through his book again. “I.. just don’t think that two male shinobi can have both teamwork, rivalry and physical attraction. I don’t see a way it can work. For instance, let’s say that I was physically attracted to you.”

Kakashi’s ears perked up.

”We have a mission together here, to train Naruto and that takes priority.” Yamato explained.

“..Ah. That takes priority...” Kakashi agreed, turning his attention toward the brown haired man in front of him.

“And we clash at times, whether it be in the way I’m holding back the Kyuubi’s chakra, or the amount of leeway you allow Naruto. And that can be seen as the struggle of rivals, and thus adding a tension between the two of us.” Yamato continued.

“Only because you don’t think my idea for training Naruto is as great as it is.” Kakashi rebutted.

“That’s not the point! Now, if you added the element of physical attraction to the mix by imagining I was attracted to you, Kakashi and wished for us to be physically close..” Yamato’s speech slowed as he noticed he had acquired Kakashi’s full attention. “..what..” he asked.

Kakashi smirked, “Nothing, I was just doing as you instructed. Imagining you were attracted to me and wished for us to be physically close. Please continue.”

Yamato felt his cheeks go red. “tha.. Now, hold on that’s not what I meant.”

“You’re blushing” Kakashi grinned as he pointed to Yamato’s face.

“Well? I mean, I’m embarrassed because you make it sound like I was saying-“

“That you wanted me to imagine you wanting us to be physically close. Your words.” Kakashi taunted.

“Oh come on now. That’s absurd. Even if it were true, my point is that it couldn’t work.” He argued back.

“Even if it were true, Tenzou? “ Kakashi noted.

“That’s not the point! I’m saying that regardless of physical desire, we’re here for Naruto’s training and as you agreed- that takes priority.” Yamato struggled to regain control of the conversation as well as obtain a moment to figure out exactly what it was he was saying here.

“Ah. I do agree. Naruto’s training takes priority, but as you can see, right now- he’s alseep.” Kakashi pointed over his should back at the young genin, passed out on the other side of the fire.

Yamato was speechless. What exactly what happening here? Was he saying what he thought he was saying? And what was with Kakashi’s reactions? It was almost as if he was arguing in favor of such an attraction!

“Now hold on just a minute. Kakashi, we all know well and good that you aren’t attracted to men.” Yamato argued.
“Oh, and you are?” Kakashi shifted his right leg down, pulling his left leg up as if in anticipation of the answer.
His sudden movement seemed trigger a blaring alarm in Yamato’s mind.
“That’s none of your business!” Yamato blurted out, realizing all too late that he had no intention of making such a statement.

Silence.

Yamato stared at the fire, grasping the moment heartbeat by heartbeat as rush of blood to his face brought with it a feeling of both embarrassment and defeat. Had he really just said that? Said all of that? Where did this conversation go from a hypothetical situation into outright admission of attraction? Looking at Kakashi now, a generous smirk on his face, his full attention back to his book, it was no doubt to Yamato that he did find something stunning in the silver haired shinobi’s behavior. Something both elusive and enticing that rested just behind that mask that covered half of his face. But what was with Kakashi’s reactions? Was he playing games with him?
Yamato closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath. This conversation had become exhausting and uncomfortable. It was definitely time to call it a night and get rest for tomorrow where he was sure to need all of his energy to fight both the Kyuubi’s chakra and whatever teasing Kakashi would dish out.
“It just wouldn’t work.. is all I’m saying.” Yamato concluded. Letting out a deep sigh, he rose to his feet and turned in the direction of his bedroll.
“Would you care to give it a try..?” Kakashi replied, shifting his legs once again, still face first in his book.
