Hunger

Chapter Two

The door swung open, creaking on its hinges.
The boy had heard the key scrape in the lock before the door opened and had frozen in fear.

He entered the cell and looked the small figure over, his face a mask of displeasure.
The boy began to tremble as the silence stretched between them.

“Get up.”

The boy didn’t move. He just shook harder and stared at Him.

“Don’t make me repeat myself.”

The boy really was paralysed in fear.
He knew he should move, should do whatever He said but he couldn’t seem to make his limbs obey his commands.

His voice lowered, now deceptively gentle.
“I warned you, didn’t I? Why didn’t you get up when I told you to? Are you trying to resist? Could it be, you are refusing to obey me? Hmm?… Now, let me see what else have you done?”

The boy was petrified now. He always, always hurt him when he used that voice. He shuddered and couldn’t stop a moan of dread from escaping his lips.

That soft, lilting voice again, asking softly. “Did I say you could eat? Did I tell you could move from your place?”

He watched as the boy cowered in fear then he roared at him.
“I didn’t say you could! You disobeyed me!”

The boy jumped and started to sob at his sudden outburst.

He lowered his voice again.
“That’s right. You disobeyed me. You know what that means, don’t you?”

The boy was crying and shaking uncontrollably now.

He eyed him for a moment then continued.
“Yes. Disobedience means you have to be punished.”
