The Man Who Was The Sun
Sasuke battled through another sleepless night, tossing and turning while trying to keep a certain someone from his thoughts. He had been relieved when Naruto had not returned. Uzumaki, his housekeeper had told him with a cluck of disapproval, was fast sleep on his bed. After a while he realized the nurse may as well have been there; Sasuke’s mind could dwell on little else. The benevolent sun continued to smile down at him with compassion even when he closed his eyes. There was no escape.
It was only when the sky began turning pink on the horizon with the approach of dawn, he managed to fall into a restless slumber.
“Hey, Uchiha-san?”
The voice that had haunted all his dreams was suddenly there, cutting through the haze of sleep like a hot knife through butter, bringing him back to the world with a jolt. Opening his eyes Sasuke stared up at the sun in human form that was leaning above him. As he let his gaze drift across that gorgeous face, he noted that the voice was different. It was bright and confident, unmindful of the sorrow in the room that had just yesterday nearly silenced it. Naruto was like a flower that perked up towards the light, even after being stepped on.
Vaguely aware of a hand resting on his shoulder, he looked up at smiling light blue eyes and again felt that flash of fear that the shadows that he felt surrounding him would somehow sink into Naruto and smother the brightness. To taint the sun was an unforgettable sin. Sasuke groaned and turned away, trying to bury himself within the blankets.
Naruto misinterpreted the action, assuming it was because a sleepy Sasuke didn’t want to get up. He seemed to brighten more at this show of wilfulness. “Sasuke, it’s nearly ten. I know you need your rest but you can sleep again later, but you have to eat. I’ve brought your breakfast. We can eat together. Oh, but first, your morning check up.”
We can eat together Did that sentence sound hopeful?
So it was happening, just as he had feared. The intruder was bursting his way in, shining in a way that could not ignored. Sasuke was angry again, but after a moment that emotion just left him exhausted. Being angry was too much work, especially when you realized that unleashing your anger would make a certain someone’s smile disappear.
“Come on Sasuke.” The man who was the sun cajoled him, trying to grab at the blankets Sasuke was holding securely against his body like a shield.
Everyone knew that you should never look directly into the sun, or else you would go blind. Sasuke could almost imagine the confused look on Naruto’s face when he let out a bitter bark of laughter. He was already loosing his sight, speeding it up a little wouldn’t exactly matter.
Sasuke sat up and looked. He did not go blind, but for a while he was lost in himself.
With a professional air Naruto began to methodically poke and prod Sasuke, something the sick pale man had become used to during the course of his sickness. His heart rate and blood pressure were checked, all part of the attempt to make sure he didn’t drop dead too fast, or at least to try and predict how long he may have left. Every detail would be written down to be read by doctors, who sat in their leather chairs in their big white offices and who would nod as if they understood what he was going through.
It was all so pointless.
This moment heralded the era of relying on another for everything. At least with just his housekeeper he had the illusion of self-reliance. Not anymore.
Getting up from the bed, Naruto handed him his nightgown and then helped him to his chair.
Eventually he would even need Naruto to help him wash. Sasuke could think of nothing more embarrassing or demeaning than that. Weakened to the point of not being able to retain a proper level of hygiene.
Having watched Sasuke for the last three minutes, Naruto was beginning to get slightly worried. That beautiful face had remained in a deadpan expression ever since he had begun his check-up routine; a look of nothingness that sent a shiver up his spine. He almost doubted Sasuke was aware that he was now sitting in front of his breakfast.
Naruto sat across from Sasuke, placed his elbows on the table and his head in his hands, and watched his patient.
~~~
All Naruto had wanted since he had woken up was to come in cheerfully, get some food into Sasuke and then spend the day getting to know this fragile spirit. Naruto had wondered, as he had lain awake early that morning, what a smile would look like on Sasuke’s pale face? Oh, he would be willing to wait until the end of time for just one glimpse. His only wish right now was to brighten Sasuke’s life. Hopefully it would be possible by using the optimism and enthusiasm that were his greatest assets.
As he had showered, dressed and checked he had all the necessary equipment for that mornings check up, his mind went through the ways he could make this lonely house a little lighter.
When Naruto had entered the room Sasuke was still asleep, resting on his back in a near complete imitation of death. If it were not for the steady, reassuring rise and fall of breath Naruto would have been in a panic. Luckily he had noticed the breathing before he darted across the room in a panicky fluster.
Even in his sleep Sasuke seemed troubled, brow creased faintly and eyelids flickering softly as he dreamed. So Naruto left. He had returned three more times during that morning and found the same scene each time, and each time after that he would return to pacing up and down the hall.
It was just as he was about to enter for the fourth time that he had realized how ridiculous he was acting. He was a highly trained nurse, and had been for five years now, who did not get flustered or nervous even when faced with bloody car wreck victims. Yet here he was acting like an overprotective mother, wringing his hands because Sasuke, a man who was extremely sick, was sleeping in. Feeling stupid he had walked away from the door, only to return twenty minutes later to wake Sasuke up.
~~~
“Sasuke?” Naruto’s lips felt dry as he licked them, his concerned gaze on the far-away Sasuke. “You should eat something.”
Slowly Sasuke came out of his trance, his head turning and eyes seeking out the comforting form of the old oak. That tree, a solid memory from a time that didn’t have sun’s with dazzling smiles.
His gaze moved from that tree down to the table that had been moved in front of his usual chair. A cream-coloured mush of oats awaited him. Reaching out he curled one slender hand around the silver spoon. Naruto, he saw, was already almost finished his own bowl porridge. The good appetite didn’t surprise him, he had guessed as much after seeing the glowing good health that Naruto sported.
Himself, he was a different story. Eating was an unavoidable evil, if he didn’t want to die earlier than absolutely necessary that was. Even before he was sick Sasuke had never enjoyed the act of eating. Now it was even worse, his appetite being non-existent.
“How do you feel?”
An innocent enough question but Sasuke was annoyed by it. He answered with a statement, his tone kept carefully mild. “You’ve read my file.”
“Uh, yes.” Naruto answered anyway, head tilting with a quizzical air.
“How do you think I feel?” Sasuke spoke those last words with as much venom as the day before, but Naruto’s reaction was different. He did not recoil; he simply looked away. Sasuke realized it was an instinctual movement, meant to hide his eyes that would betray his every feeling.
Naruto chose to ignore the angry words, instead remarking on the first thing that captured his attention. “That’s a beautiful tree.”
Sasuke glowered.
The force of that glare made Naruto turn, his puzzled eyes moving into an expression of dismay. Blue eyes made from the sky, the window into his soul, each feeling mirrored there for anyone to see.
A dark beast. That was what Sasuke felt like seeing what was held those beautiful eyes. A dark beast whose shadows smothered the sun. But that dismayed look suddenly cleared, leaving Sasuke an unsteady soul. The man who was the sun had pushed away the clouds and now stared at Sasuke in an honest, earnest way that captured his complete attention.
“I know you don’t like me Uchiha-san. But it would be great if we could just try and get along. I want to be your friend. Let’s give this a few more days, and if you’re really not happy I’ll go tell your doctor and he’ll find you somebody else. Okay?”
Sasuke nodded and Naruto smiled.
“Great! Come on then, get into your porridge.”
With that face beaming at him Sasuke’s appetite made a miraculous recovery. He could not say a thing to the man who was watching him with happy eyes, just enjoyed the sunlight.
