Chapter title: Do You Believe

-

The mission briefing had gone off without a hitch and the three teams were assigned their roll among the ‘Akatsuki situation.’ Her own group consisted of Sai -much to her own dismay- as captain, herself as Co-captain, and two wet nosed chuunin named Daichi and Hibari as their underlings. Each holding a very important roll in the team.

Sai, the oldest at nineteen years old, was the most experienced in the tracking department. He had been hunting persons down from his Bingo Book since the impressionable age of seven, after all. He also had the right mind set in completing the mission with as little creases as possible, while someone like Naruto would create such a shamble of things with his loud mouth alone. Along with that, he was a respectful figure among everyone -but Sakura- which made their team solid in its leadership.

Daichi was a young man at the ripe age of fifteen. Sakura would almost want to call him handsome but that was not quite the word to describe him, more accurately one would call him button nosed cute. With light colored hair that fanned around his face like the fibers of feathers, his equally light eyes large and full of life, and his skin a luminescent cream color. He possessed no refine features about him, like Kakashi or Neji did with their very presence, but he had one thing neither of them could match, and that was his purity. Daichi oozed an innocent aura that surpassed even the most modest virgin girls and celibate monks. Sakura noted, almost sadly, that his major tool was that innocence and not the skills of his chuunin rank. As any person could assume, innocents cannot remain forever and as soon as he bloodied his hands he would lose his most powerful weapon. Luckily he wasn’t assigned to them for his skill but for his connections, as his family was composed mainly of drifters which would give them entrance to any place needed.

Hibari, Sakura liked very much. She was the youngest of the group, hardly tipping the scales of fourteen. Her hair was the tone of copper in the sun, and brown when in shadow; her eyes were a very deep blue with sparks of white sprouting aimlessly around, and her tattoos had to be the most intricate and beautiful thing about her. The tattoos hugged all the curves of her body and swirled in waved designs. Hibari was crowned with the name mouse not only because of her small frame, but because of those tattoos and their abilities, which was exactly the reason she had been assigned to team Sai. The ‘mouse’ could literally blend with the shadows when she infused her chakara into the ink that her clan imprinted on her as a child. She was perfect for stealth and observation.

Sakura, herself at the cusp of seventeen was the brains. She was the only member of the teams that had legitimately taken down an Akatsuki member and lived to tell the tale. As an added bonus she was also trained excessively in the medical arts and strategic assaults which gave their team an extra security that some were not lucky enough to get.

So that was her team; experience, brains, speed, and connections. Apart her team might have not been efficient, but together they had the longer end of the stick on any powerful Akatsuki member or demon. Sakura was fully confident in them and herself.

It was generally unheard of to have a team full of barely aged shinobi, but Sakura had ‘loaned’ Kakashi to Shikamaru as their team leader, which left her needing a new one. The ex ROOT operative just happened to be free and capable for the job assigned. Anyways, Shikamaru had the harder mission in tracking the Akatsuki, while all team Sai had to do was track the JinchuuRiki and inform team Gai so that they can protect the demon vassals, which meant she could do without her perverted leader.

Sakura truly felt that she and her team had been awarded the ‘lesser of the three evils’ so to speak. They were not required in any way to have an interaction with the notorious villains, and actually told to stay away from confrontation if it was possible. The only reason she could think of being told that was because they had two chuunin under their jounin belts.

So then why did it bother her so much to be told to run? Since leaving her comfortable home this morning, meeting with the teams, flying through the trees –destined paths pointed at Waterfall Country-, till now, resting in a nameless village’s inn Sakura has felt something following and scratching at her subconscious mind.

She could smell it. Something was rank with a side smell of fishiness and deceit.

What ever strings her superiors were pulling could not be good, but -as any good sharpened tool would do- Sakura ignored it as best she could and decided to do only what she was told. Hopefully neglecting it would not cause any death or misfortune.

Before the suns rays glowed over the mountain peeks their team was gone with little evidence of ever stopping there. The pace was set fast at the hopes of reaching Waterfall within the weeks ending. Although it pained her to do so, Sakura had to give props to Sai for his ability to absorb his surrounding and figure something was wrong with the present situation like she had. While Sakura remained a very sharp tool, Sai often found he was in need of…re-sharpening, at least when it came to understanding the human and all its combined emotions. None the less, when she started to ponder the odd orders and feel uneasy about this mission Sai had taken the time to reassure her –in his own stupid and twisted way- to not “worry her ugly large forehead” about it. Two punches and a kick later, Sakura had decided that she was no longer worried, at least till something happened to make her reconsider the choice.

So team Sai traveled, running across the branches in a trained graceful ease, until the trees thinned and the team was forced to run along the dirt pathways. Their brakes in speed only happened when someone, namely the newbs, had to go to the ‘little chuunin’s room’ or when meal time forced stomachs to growl. And for the next five days that’s how things conspired, until they reached the safe house on the outskirts of Waterfall.

A night of camping there and strategy planning on Sakura’s part and the four spilt in two teams, women with women, men with men, intending on finding information on their intended target.

Sakura huffed a fatigued sigh, plopping herself onto the squishy bank of the famous Kohaku river waiting for her partner to return from relieving herself.

After three days apart the teams were appointed to meet in order to organize the information gathered and decide from there where to go and then report it back to headquarters. This was why they had to go fast, with only one day to get there, one day to get the information, and the final to travel back to base.

Hibari speed was impressive and had Sakura physically pushing just to keep up with her, but keeping her pace had paid off as they had reached the destination they desired-with time to spare- in order to expunge information from a bald scrupulous character.

Keyword, bald.

It was very unnerving to know that someone they were ordered to use ‘any means’ to get information -considering the location- was very likely a religious monk. What had to be done, she supposed, had to be done. No use harping over duties, better spend that time figuring out where the Younbi, Rukobi, and Nanabi could be hidden.

Hearing the soft foot falls of her comrade, Sakura lifted herself up and dusted off. They needed to get to him, extract the information, and rendezvous back with the captain.

God, I hate calling him that.

Hibari stepped into Sakura’s line of sight and curt nods were exchanged before the kunoichi disappeared in a flash of smoke and petals.

The foreboding feeling Sakura had been having slowly dissipated into the dark recesses of her mind as instinct kicked in to do her job. She had learned a hard lesson on her first high ranked mission to keep her head on what was needed and not dwindle on things that had no purpose.

They had snuck into the compound relatively easy for day time, the ‘mouse’ using her skills to get them both unseen into the shadows of the temple. Sakura did not have to expel any chakra in order to climb up walls or use it for jutsu to hide herself.

I knew I liked her.

Sakura smirked, almost laughed, as trained shinobi and monks walked past them without so much as a head turn. It was just cake walking and picking out who could and could not be the monk they were looking for. For such a high ranked mission, Sakura had a good time pointing out that any genin could do it without much trouble.

One of the many monks walked by, looking very much away from their point. He even side stepped slightly as if to avoid bumping into ‘invisible’ air.

It struck Sakura then, this was flagrantly easy. It felt like they were letting them in with welcoming arms. The trained monks and ninja were –purposely- completely avoiding casting even a single glance in their direction in order to make them feel safe at home.

Moments passes and Sakura could bluntly see that it was indeed everyone in the open square not looking at the wall Habari and herself hugged.

Oh shit. This is bad.

Sakura’s whole body went rigid and she stopped Hibari instantly, giving her a wearily eye. A pause passed between them as the copper hair colored girl registered the message being sent to her, and not a moment later the atmosphere changed like lightning had just struck.

A sense of fear developed deep in Sakura’s gut, screaming run - get out! Using all her trained and powerful muscles, Sakura wrapped up Hibari in one arm and used the other to smash the ground below her, hoping to cover them for a second while she jumped their assets out of that boiling pot.

The ‘unaware’ men spring into life the second Sakura made a move to haul tail out of there, and almost simultaneously they attempted to attacked. Lucky for her most were shocked stupid when the ground rumbled in a small earthquake, while the higher ranked monks elected a barrier and cut off their escape through the sky.

Shit.

Doing a summersault in the air, Sakura released Hibari and readied herself for a fight.

“Hibari-chan, stay close, fight- but don’t kill anyone unless you absolutely have to.”

The small girl nodded, but showed no sign of fear as gravity pulled them back to the earth in order to fight. When feet planted onto earth both kunoichi dropped into a fighting stance -back to back- expecting a wave of fighters charging at them.

Now more then ever Sakura felt the pangs of her ignorance as it became even more painfully obvious that this was a trap. A barricade of men stood laughing at them with the glint in their eyes.

Sakura felt her fists of fury itch, wanting to scratch themselves all over the confident male faces. Measuring the mass quicky, Sakura decided it would be much faster to fight their way out and regroup and reform a new plan then to allow herself and young Habari the pleasure of a personal experience to a temples confinement.

In a split second her heel dug into the dirt floor and Sakura gathered chakra to the bottom of her four limbs. Sweat slid down the taunt skin on Sakura’s neck and she lunged towards the weakest point in the crowd.

Right behind her, Sakura felt Habari move herself into action, and in a moment of leadership she looked to assure the young girl could handle what she was attacking. Turning back Sakura noticed her vison flash and suddenly her ears were filled with the melancholy voice of an un-scene man.

A resounding “STOP” filled all the crevices and regions in her head. The voice of powerful and commanding that even despite herself, Sakura stopped at the order.

Slowly, ever so slowly Sakura straightened her posture and lowered the doom that was encased inside her fists. She cast a glace behind her, checking to see if Hibari was alright. When Sakura looked forward again someone had appeared in front of the wall made of men.

He was young, but not as young as herself, and looked very dignified. And so much in that moment she was reminded of her sake addict Hokage, Tsunade. Sakura’s eyes locked with his, catching everything he did with her sharp eyes.

He raised his arms in a slow manner, his wrists flowing gracefully in a patterned movement.

With a few memorizing flicks of his wrists Sakura was surrounded by black, and in her mind she felt herself fall back. No longer in control of her physical body Sakura hurtled down, but with a fleeting defiant thought Sakura let loose a her feelings on the matter...

“Fuck.”
