Ambiance of Fear
I'm re-editing this chapter, I just don't like the way it came out. Plus, it would be cool if someone gave me a idea for the next chapter, I'm kinda short on ideas. The theme would be the start of Sasuke's adventure for finding Naruto.
^~~**~~^
Sasuke opened his eyes slowly. Light poured in from all directions, blinding him, so he closed them again. He tried to lift up his body, but he felt too weak and collapsed back on the bed, coughing in pain. A short, petite nurse came in, carrying a tray with two needles and a small cup, while in the other hand she had a pink balloon heart saying “Get Well Soon!” attached to a small clipboard. She came over and sat on a plastic chair next to him, placing the tray on the table next to the bed. She took the balloon in one hand and set down the clipboard, and Sasuke could see that there was a small pile of cards on top, covered with bright paper with large words and stickers. He stared at them for a while, wondering if they were for someone else that she was caring for or if they were for him. He decided that they were for someone else and that he should look away before the nurse caught him looking. But she was quicker than that, and as she finished tying a nice bow on the balloon she tied to his bed, she spoke in a soft, meek voice: “Those are for you, ya know….” She said smiling. He grunted, then tried to sit up again but this time used the bar on the bed for support. The nurse, seeing what he was trying to do, helped prop himself against the bed and into a comfortable position. She fluffed his pillow and placed the cards on his lap, still sitting there smiling at him as he slowly picked one up. He squinted at the messy hand writing and guessed it was from Kakashi, who was never good at writing anything that wasn’t related to a mission. It was a yellow envelope with the word “Sasuke” scribbled on it. He tore the letter open, only to find that the outside was blank, and on the inside it said “You know what this card is for, I know you are ill in more than one way right now, get better. Kakashi.” Sasuke snickered. ‘That’s Kakashi alright’ he thought. “That’s not a very thoughtful card now, is it?” a voice said. He turned only to find that the nurse was still there. “Y-Your still here?” he said, looking over to the nurse still sitting there. “Of course I am!” she cried. “I’m here until 7:30, oh and by the way, my name is Akemi.” She giggled. He couldn’t help but smile at her, something about her reminded him about someone he held dearly, but he couldn’t remember who it was. “My name is Sasuke Uchiha” he said dryly. “Sasuke Uchiha?!? As in Itachi Uchiha is your brother?!?” “Wow!” she replied excitedly, with a devilish sparkle in her aquamarine-blue eyes. Sasuke rolled his eyes. He had expected this much from anyone within a 50-mile radius of his house. After all, his brother had been voted one of the top male models in all of Japan, and now every female from ages 6 1/2 to 87 were after his brother and himself to get “a piece of him.”
Just then, a sharp knock interrupted their conversation. “Sasuke?” he heard a familiar voice say. Akemi stopped giggling long enough to hear it and got up to open the door. She peeked out the crack of the door and smiled. “Well it looks like you got some visitors and what nice ones too. “Come in.” she said as she opened the door wider and two figures stepped over the doorway and stood in the opposite corner of the small room. ‘Who are these people?’ he wondered as he raked his mind for answers. Then it hit him like a thousand kunai pouring from the sky out of nowhere. “S-Sakura?!” he exclaimed, rubbing his eyes before looking again. She was so grown and different now it was like yesterday when he last saw her, but now looking at her, she was at least a few inches taller and curved nicely around her hips. She had also grown larger around her chest. ‘She must take after Tsunade a lot, from all that training she did when she was younger’ he thought. He looked over and saw Shikamaru staring out at the setting sun, the sky painted a bleeding orange with splashes of yellow and red dancing around thin purple clouds that loomed by the sun. He stared out the window for a long time, then turned and sat in one of the chairs by the window. He sighed and pulled out a pair of reading glasses and a small book with a picture of a woman running from a man on the cover. Sakura just hung there like she was glued to the ground, biting her nails nervously every once and a while, shaking slightly and swaying a little, staring at Sasuke with tears in her eyes. He clutched his fists, his nails digging into his skin, and furrowed his brow as he formed his blank face into a tight frown. ‘Why did they come here if they aren’t going to say anything?’ he thought angrily. Akemi, still standing by the door, saw what was happening in his mind. She walked over and pulled out a white remote with a red button on it. She laid it next to the bed and switched on the lamp that was placed on the table behind the remote. “If you need anything, just push this button and I will come straight here.” She said sternly. Her eyes had glassed over, looking like a null jade color now, and she was amazingly sincere looking for just a moment, but then burst in a fit of giggles as her eyes returned color. “I’m sorry but you look so cute when you’re serious!” she breathed. Sasuke smiled and leaned over and picked up the remote, holding it in his hand. “I will.” He promised her. Akemi sighed, and for a split second she looked like an old woman, but then put back on her smile and left the room. Shikamaru looked up from his book and snapped it shut. He took off his glasses and put both inside his vest. Rising, he walked over to Sasuke’s bed and sat on it, then cleared his throat and spoke. “So man, how’ve you been?” he said, not bothering to look at him. Sasuke said nothing and the three of them sat there in pure silence. Sasuke could hear the world outside of his hospital room; Ichiraku’s vending pitch and the delicious smell of fresh ramen being made, young children playing by a large tree, the Hokage faces carved onto the mountain side. The tension was too thick for Sakura and she couldn’t bear it anymore. “Sasuke!” she blurted out, flinging herself onto him. “Don’t you remember anything?” she cried, her tears overflowing now. “W-What?” stuttering on his words as he spoke. “Remember what Sakura?” Shikamaru, who had moved when Sakura flung herself, shook his head in disappointment and turned back to the window. He continued to stare but Sakura started to explain. “It was only a few hours after Naruto had left you….. and you went home and into the kitchen…… and….and…” she started to stutter, her voice getting hoarse and starting to crack, tears running down her face. Sasuke nestled her into his chest, resting his head on hers in a loving embrace. “Sakura…..” he spoke softly, smoothing down her hair. “Please, tell me.” She lifted up her head and stopped hyperventilating, trying to speak softly but ended up shrieking for the whole hospital to hear “You tried to kill yourself!” “You took a kitchen knife and stabbed yourself but you barely missed your heart! The doctors almost couldn’t save you!” she broke down. Shikamaru, broke his stare with the outside world, turned and put his hand on Sasuke’s shoulder. “The doctors and surgeons both said that you pierced your aorta and almost sliced right through your left ventricle, any deeper and you would have hit a lung and then they couldn’t of saved you.” he said firmly, gripping his shoulder with every new word that came out his mouth. “You put all of your neighbors, friends, everyone that ever cared about you into a frenzy!” “Naruto called after he left and told me that you might take it seriously and I should keep a sharp eye out.” “Hinata thought you would be awake at the late hours and brought you some books to read on healing after relationships, she knocked on your door and when you didn’t answer she peeked through the window and called the paramedics.” he said, his voice slowly breaking. He started to snuffle, and raised his palm up to wipe away the tears that threatened to fall. “No one…s-should pointlessly t-throw away their l-life like that….” He sobbed. Sakura had fallen asleep on Sasuke, and Shikamaru picked her up and carried her to the small couch directly across from the bed, laying her on it and placing his vest over her. “You check out tomorrow.” He sighed as Sakura curled up from the warmth of the jacket. “We will come to pick you up and take you home.” “Then, you will stay with us for a while, until you fully heal and are able to go home.” Shikamaru said turning around, placing his knuckles on his waist. ‘He looks older too’ Sasuke thought as he observed him in the bright hospital lights, now that it was dark outside he could see more clearly. He had bags under his eyes from long, sleepless nights and rough hands from writing, practicing and probably at his level, killing men. His hair had gotten long and shaggy and looked deformed the pony tail that he always wore. His earrings were replaced with studs and he had grown a good few inches taller too.
“You should get some rest, you look tired.” Shikamaru said, breaking his gaze. He picked up Sakura, still asleep, and carried her out. Night, Sasuke.” he said as he pulled the door shut to the room, but ended up slamming it shut. “Yeah,” said Sasuke, in a whisper, after the door closed. “Night.”
