Feedback is appreciated. I enjoy hearing from all of my readers. That you take the time to read is great, that you take the time to write is awesome. You are what makes writing worth while. I hope that you enjoy reading it and I look forward to your comments.

My sincere thanks to the following:

Trigger Happy Bitcha: He did come across as a little overbearing, but give him a chance.

hell_on_earth: Thanks for your support. I hope I can keep you interested.

narutovixen: Well, it can’t all be happy, can it? But Naruto manages, somehow.

sakuyalove: It may take Sasuke some time to figure that one out.

Ino-chan: Thanks for your support and comment. I try my best to please.

angel: Thanks for your support. I can assure you that there will be at least a couple of chapters before I’m done.

Shadowsonata: No, definitely not a one shot. There’s too much room for drama left.

AiroAden: Thanks for the support. Hope you enjoy this next bit.

harley: He could do better, but the question is, does he want to?

Animelover: I really hope that you like what I do with him, 'cos he’s my favorite, and I hate seeing him be a total bastard.

Kirai: I really must admit, I’m going from the anime, 'cos I haven’t read all that much of the manga, but I’ve seen all of the anime available.

beautifullove348: Oh, no, I won’t just leave them hanging like that. That would just be mean.

lexjamandme: Thanks for your support. It does fuel the creative fire within, I can assure you.

Lanie12777: Thanks for your comment, I’m glad you liked it and I hope you’re not disappointed with this next bit.

mls: Thanks. Here it is, I hope you like it as much as the first part.

katsuyo: I’ve been told that sad is what I do best, but it will get happier, I promise.

Meadhbh: It’s going to take them a little time and some hard work, but it’s hard to change fate. Or yourself, really.

KyuubiKit: Definitely a part two, and at least a part three. After that, I really don’t know.

Once more, thank you all so much. The response has been overwhelming. I love it. You are all awesome.

More Than Just a Kiss…

Part Two

The days stretched on in a seemingly endless parade of time. Mornings that the trio didn’t have missions found them out on the training field. The tentative friendship between Sasuke and Naruto was slowly starting to grow. They could most often be found wandering the streets of Konoha village in the evenings after a trip to Ichiraku Ramen before they would part for the night, Naruto going to his small one room apartment and Sasuke back to the empty, rambling Uchiha estate.

The days were pleasant and enjoyable for the dark-haired boy. The nights, on the other hand were sheer torture. Sometimes he would wander the empty halls until the early hours of the morning, as if fearing sleep and the dreams that would inevitably find him.

No, not dreams, thought Sasuke. Nightmaress. Nightmares of fear and hate. Uchiha Itachi lives. Itachi lives. He should die. He needs to die. He needs to die like everyone else did.

Night after endless night, the images of that horrible day tormented the last survivor of the Uchiha clan. And the words, those horrible words: “You’re not even worth killing”, coupled with that maniacal grin. “Hate me, and when you hate me enough, then face me again.”

Sasuke hated the nights and their constant reminders that he had never been as good as Uchiha Itachi, that he fell short of everyone’s expectations, no matter how hard he tried. Itachi was the shining star of the Uchiha clan and Sasuke paled in his light, the shining star that totally eclipsed the entire Uchiha clan. And so the hate and despair grew.

But among his blackest clouds a small glimmer of sunshine had appeared. A nagging little bit of light that ever increasingly demanded that the Uchiha push some of the blackness aside and pay attention to it. And that little bit of fluff went by the name of Uzimechi Naruto. Slowly, ever so slowly he demanded more and more of the Uchiha’s attention. And Sasuke smiled just a little bit in the warmth of his glow as the bouncy blonde started to invade his life.

But he confused Sasuke as well. The boy was unsure of how to handle the new feelings and emotions that the blonde stirred in him. And so he made demands on the other boy, set increasingly higher and higher marks that the blonde had to meet. And Naruto tried his best to meet them, not understanding why, but not questioning. Until the raven haired boy set the last bar with the ultimate prize at the end. And the blonde refused the jump. Something in his make-up rebelled at the changes that the Uchiha had demanded.

And a part of Sasuke sneered at the failure, but another part was sad. He had thought that perhaps, just perhaps, the other would be the one to help him finally throw off the demons that seemed to possess him and haunt his nights. But, in the end, Sasuke was unable to allow himself to accept the other completely into his heart. He was unable to accept the blonde as he was, perhaps too afraid that the other boy would displace some of the need for the revenge that fueled the Uchiha’s every moment of every day, and so he made a demand that he knew the other would never succumb to.

And so the Uchiha continued on alone, nursing his grudge, fueling his need to eventually extract his revenge on the hated Uchiha Itachi.

But still, a small part of himself allowed a small part of the other into his life, just a little, and the boys became friends.

A friend was something that foreign to Sasuke, but he learned how to deal with the new feelings and let himself feel as much friendship as he could in return. And so time passed, life was almost good and the nights had become more bearable.

For Naruto, the nights held dreams, too. But his dreams were changing as well. More often than not a small raven would invade his most pleasant dream, the one where he gained the recognition of the entire village when he was made Hokage. At first it was only fleeting glimpses, as if there was a small shadow following him, but soon the small raven had manifested itself as the Uchiha, and he began to dominate the blonde’s nights as he dominated his days.

Naruto would occasionally awaken from his dreams with an aching erection that he was forced to relieve in the most expedient way, but most often he just awoke to a wet, sticky mess that he had to deal with no matter what the hour of the night. Mornings often found the boy needing to finish rinsing out his pyjamas before the day could properly begin. It was most likely a good thing that he lived alone, as his shower rod had become almost a permanent hanger for his dripping pyjamas.

“Oi, Sasuke, let’s go have ramen today,” Naruto called to the departing Uchiha.

“No,” said the other curtly, continuing to walk away.

“Why not?” Naruto whined. “We haven’t had ramen all week.”

“No!” repeated Sasuke.

“But Sasuke…” Naruto continued to whine as he caught up to the other boy and took his arm.

“I don’t want to,” said Sasuke, shaking him off.

“Aw, come on. Please?” Naruto begged. It always went like this, until he wore the Uchiha down. “Please?”

“Fine. If you’ll just shut up, I’ll go,” the dark-haired boy huffed, seemingly annoyed, but inside secretly pleased that the other craved his company so much.

They walked in companionable silence, Naruto content to give Sasuke the quiet he wanted now that he had gotten his way. Lately, he almost always got his way with Sasuke, and that made him happy. He was content to allow things to happen as they would, without too much prodding from himself. Eventually he knew in his heart that Sasuke would succumb to him and he was pleased to think of Sasuke as his boyfriend, yes his, even it if was only secretly in his own dreams.

They walked after eating and ended up as they often did on the empty practice field. However, they didn’t walk in the trees again. too much had been left unsaid under those trees. Too much was waiting on the promise that was as yet unfulfilled. Instead the two sparred a bit, playfully, until they were tired, then threw themselves on the grass to rest as they gazed at the stars that were starting to emerge.

“It’s cool, we all made it through the first test, isn’t it?” babbled Naruto. “I didn’t have any doubts that we could do it. We’re the strongest team, after all. We’ll blast our way through the second part, no problem. What do you think Sasuke?”

“Huh?” responded the Uchiha. He’d been letting his mind wander, and suddenly realized he had no idea about what Naruto had been running on about, or what he’d just asked him. So he’d just have to hazard a guess at an answer. Most of the time Naruto was happy with a simple acknowledgement that didn’t mean anything anyway, and now should be no exception. “Yeah, I’m sure.”

“You know, Sasuke,” said Naruto, rolling to his elbow so that he could look at the other boy, “I know that you really don’t pay attention to me when I talk to you. Do you even know what you just agreed to?”

“What!?!” exclaimed Sasuke. Was he that transparent? “What did you ask me?”

“If I could hold your hand,” purred Naruto, reaching out to trace a finger over the back of the Uchiha’s hand before capturing it with his own.

Horrified, Sasuke tried to pull away, but the grip Naruto had on him was too strong. After a moment, he stopped tugging and just lay glaring at the smirking blonde.

“Yeah, whatever,” was his reply, but he accepted the warmth of the other’s hand and Naruto lay back, smiling. A subtle victory was his that day.

But not all of their days were to be spent so pleasantly.

The second exam was on them before they knew it, with disastrous results. Orochimaru had attacked and laid his seal on Sasuke. That preyed deeply on the mind of the Uchiha. He hadn’t even been able to save himself. It was Naruto that finally overcame their adversary. That almost seem to eat at Sasuke, and he began to try to distance himself from the blonde. Friendship was a weakness, and he couldn’t afford any weakness. He had to rely only on himself, no matter how much Kakashi-sensei went on and on about teamwork. He just couldn’t let himself be distracted by friendship, so love was out of the question.

Wait… Love? Love for that blonde, loud-mouthed idiot? Surely not. That thought was almost as devastating to him as the realization that he was weaker than his rival. Yes. Naruto was supposed to be a rival, at best a friend. But not someone to love. How could that have happened? No, it just couldn’t be that. He would simply put that thought out of his head. Yes, that definitely made him feel better. At least, he thought it did. Maybe he was wrong?
