It was morning now. The night before she had fallen asleep in his arms. He seemed so different now, letting her sleep with him like that. The Sasuke she knew had always been so distant and aloof; almost as if he was in his own little world and didn’t care about anything around him. She had always loved him, but she had never seen this side of him before. He was always staring off into the distance. He probably hadn’t even noticed she had woken up. She sighed. He looked down and realized that she was awake. They had been out all night. They were both silent, neither one of them knowing exactly what to say. After a while, Sakura got to her feet.

“I should probably be getting back,” she started to stand, but instead she became dizzy and staggered a bit before falling backwards. Sasuke caught her. He briefly shot her a concerned glance before quickly returning to his stoic features.

“Are you all right?” he asked flatly.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just stood up a little too fast is all.”

“Hn. I’ll walk you home.”

“I said I’m fine!” she shouted and turned to run.

“Wait!” he called after her. She was running away again. Stupid girl. Why did she keep running away? Was she afraid of him? He ran after her.

Sakura kept running. She didn’t bother looking behind her. Her head was spinning, everything was getting so bright. She was getting hot and her breathing became ragged. Her stomach turned and then everything went black.

“Sakura!” he shouted. He kneeled down beside her. She had passed out. He picked her up. ‘Shit she’s boiling!’ he thought. He had to get her to the hospital right away.

At the hospital Tsunade was called in. Sasuke waited outside of her room. Finally, Tsunade came out. She looked at him not knowing where to begin. She looked like she was about to say something when she thought otherwise. No, that was something Sakura would have to tell him herself.

“How is she?” he asked trying to mask the concern in his voice.

“Better now,” the blond women replied without looking at him, then she walked away. As she was walking she pondered how the boy would react when she told him. She wasn’t so much concerned on his reaction as she was on how he reacted to Sakura. Kami only knew the girl had been through enough lately. Tsunade knew she was only the girls mentor but she thought of Sakura as a daughter. She was only a few halls down when she ran into Kakashi.

“So, is it true?” the silver haired jounin asked. Tsunade said nothing. “So then it is that jutsu!”

Finally the women replied, “How someone could do something so, so… unspeakable is beyond me.”

“So, have you told him yet?” the man asked. Once again Tsunade said nothing. After a few second she turned and walked away.

Sasuke was still sitting there confused on the bench outside of Sakura’s room. Kakashi walked over to him and sat down beside his former pupil.

“What happened? Why did she just collapse like that?” the boy asked.
Kakashi took a deep breath, and then exhaled slowly. This was going to be hard, “I’m not exactly sure how to put this, so I’m just going to come right out and say it. Sasuke, Sakura’s pregnant.”

“…What?” he murmured. Once again, Sasuke had that deep sinking feeling of guilt. He’d kill him! Not only had his brother ruined his life, but hers too, and now she’d be forced to live with the constant reminder of that fact everyday for the rest of her life.

Kakashi could see that he was getting riled up. He knew Sasuke would react like this. But what would he do when he told him the truth. Meanwhile Sasuke was growing more and more agitated. He grasped his pant leg and scrunched it tightly in his hand.

“Sasuke,” said the silver haired man.

He didn’t hear him. He couldn’t hear anything. The boy was too wrapped up in his own thoughts, “Sasuke…” he tried again. Still no response.

“Sasuke!!!” the boy turned and looked at him. “It’s not his child…” Sasuke looked at him confused, “… it’s yours.”

There was an awkward silence. After a few minutes Sasuke spoke, “…what?” he tried to say, but he was overcome by a feeling of shock and disbelief. He couldn’t comprehend what he had just heard. How was that even…? That’s impossible, he must have heard wrong. That’s right, he heard wrong.

“…how?” he finally managed to choke out. “That’s impossible!” he said a bit loader.

“It’s a forbidden jutsu,” the man explained. “One used to cause immense suffering by indirectly causing the suffering of one close to the affected, by their own hands. All it takes is the tiniest drop of blood to acquire the chakra needed to perform the technique.

Sasuke remembered his battle with Itachi a few years back, ‘That would have meant he’s been planning this for years!’

Kakashi watched Sasuke’s reaction. It changed from confusion to, fear, to rage, to guilt and back again. ‘So Sasuke, what will you do now?’ he thought to himself.

Mean while Sakura was sitting on her bed. What would she do now?

~*~*~*~*~Flashback~*~*~*~*~

She was in the bathroom at Ichiraku’s ramen shop. After it had happened, they had told her nothing was wrong. But with being a medic nin she, well… maybe she was just being paranoid. She held the small object in her hand. It was done. Suddenly there was a knock on the door.

“Sakura,” Ino entered “you’ve been hear an awful long time…” she stopped. She saw the girl before her trembling as she stared at the small object in dismay. She was in shock. Her legs gave out from under her. Sakura dropped the object she held in her hand and it fell to the floor. Ino bent down and picked it up. She gasped! That couldn’t be right. They… they had told her she was okay.

“Please you… you can’t tell anyone!” Sakura stammered.

~*~*~*~*~End Flashback~*~*~*~*~

So it was true then. But of all things, she had never suspected this. How was she going to tell him? It was hard enough to say that his brother had raped her. Telling him she was pregnant, not with that bastard’s child, but his own. He would never understand.

Outside there was an eerie silence. ‘So, what will you do now Sasuke?’ thought Kakashi. Sasuke was deep in thought. What would he do now? What would she think of him? For the first time in his life, he didn’t think. He just let his body act on its own.

Back inside, Sakura was in tears. She couldn’t take it if he left again, but she knew he would. She couldn’t do it alone. But it had nothing to do with him. Before she knew it she felt herself being pulled back into his chest. The tears flowed faster now.

“…Sasuke-kun, I…” she began, but he interrupted.

“I’ll stay."

“…but…” she stammered. He placed his head next to hers so they were cheek to cheek.

“You don’t have to do this alone anymore.”

She felt a strange mixture of grief, guilt, fear, and relief wash over her all at the same time. She didn’t want to be alone. He tightened his embrace around her in reassurance.

“I promise I’ll protect you… both of you,” he said the last part placing his hand on her lower abdomen. “I won’t leave you this time.”

“But… what about your revenge?” she choked.

“My dream was,” he paused, “my dream was to kill Itachi…”

She felt her heart sink. She knew it. She had always known. That is what he truly wanted. She could feel her eyes starting to fill with tears once again but his voice broke through her thoughts of pain.

“…and to revive my clan!”

Her entire body went stiff. Could he really mean that? He didn’t hate her? He wasn’t repulsed by her? Didn’t he find her disgusting? She had been raped by the man he hated most and somehow she had ended up with his child. Why? Why would he stay for this? It had nothing to do with him.

“Why?” she asked.

Why? Because he wouldn’t let Itachi have his way. Not this time. If Itachi had planned this in order to smite him then he would do just the opposite. Besides, deep in his heart, even if he didn’t know it yet, he loved her. He continued to sit there and hold her as she cried.

Outside the door Kakashi had been watching the two of them the whole time. He sighed. He wasn’t sure how Sasuke was going to handle situation. He had taken it better than he had expected. Kakashi looked up to see a figure running toward him. It was his other former pupil, Naruto. He must have heard that Sakura was in the hospital.

“What happened?” Naruto huffed. He was slightly out of breath from running the whole way. “Is she okay? What’s going on?” Kakashi supposed Naruto would eventually have to find out sooner or later.

“Naruto… she’s pregnant.”

‘What?’ The boy thought. Wouldn’t they have found something like that out sooner? No, they had told her that she wasn’t… She couldn’t be. What was this man talking about? Even if she was…

“But what’s that got to do with teme?” he questioned.

“…It’s not Itachi’s child,” the older man replied. Naruto looked confused.

“What?” he asked. “Then who’s…?”

His former sensei gave no reply. Naruto took Kakashi’s silence to mean exactly what he thought it had meant.

“How…?” he asked quietly at first. “How is that even possible!?”

“A jutsu,” was his only reply.

“What kind of jutsu would do this?”

“The forbidden kind,” Kakashi stated plainly.

Naruto felt the anger rising inside him, which was only intensified by the beast held with him. It was because of Teme that, that had happened in the first place. Growing up, he had like Sakura. But she was always infatuated with Sasuke. Now his heart belonged to Hinata, but Sakura would always be like a sister to him. Would Sasuke truly stay by her side? What would happen to her if he didn’t? Just the thought made the anger rage inside him. No, he wouldn’t let that happen. He was going to make him stay by her even if it killed him.

Those thoughts quickly ceased as he felt a small hand gently squeeze his shoulder. It was Hinata. She had followed him to the hospital. She gave his shoulder another light squeeze in a wordless kind of reassurance. She was right. This was between the two of them. All he could do was hope that the teme would make the right choice.
