Chapter Two
"I am, for once, lost for words."
The ten-minute silence that had followed Sasuke's words seemed to reverberate back into his head. The Uchiha's black eyes turned quickly away from Kakashi's, hoping to hide any feelings that his facial espression might betray. Without replying, Sasuke jumped into the nearest tree and began a crashing run towards the village where drums continued to beat out a thudding, yet pleasing sound.
He felt free, for the first time in the past year. As the wind brushed its cold hands softly through his black hair, and as he climbed through the emerald canopies of trees, making his way surely towards the village, Sasuke felt light as a feather. If a threatening twinge of guilt or regret stabbed him, it was wiped out by the suffocating feeling of new opportunities.
Below him, in the Leaf Village, parents, children, spouses, friends, all danced to the light, comical music of the Uniting Festival. Everywhere, doors had been thrown open to relatives and friends, and friends of friends. The smell of baked bread wafted through the sultry evening's air, combining with the other smells of fresh foods. This alone was enough to draw every man, woman, and child out of their homes.
Hoping to arrive, full hearted, in an alley on the side of the festival, so as not to draw attention to his late arrival, Sasuke lept silently out of his natural perch. With a dust-muffled thud, he landed sure-footedly in the shadows of what he recognized as Naruto's building.
No sooner had he landed than a soft whooshing sound warned him of another visitor to this alley. He narrowed his eyes to adjust to the darkness and turned to meet his guest. Upon meeting the sight of Kakashi, Sasuke backed into the wall without registering it. His teacher took several steps towards him.
"Sasuke," his teacher started. Silence followed: apparently the copy-ninja had not planned what he was going to say when he caught up with Sasuke.
"Look," Sasuke started as well, but also lapsed into silence, unprepared. Several long moments trickled by in an awkward silence. Sasuke's mind was in two different places, wanting to stand under Kakashi's gaze forever, and running so far away that his teacher could never find him.
"It took alot of guts to tell me that," Kakashi admitted. "I admire your boldness, but I-I can't... I'm sure you understand," he added. Sasuke's eyes finally travelled upward to meet the solitary other.
"Yes, I understand. Conflict of interests. Impossible. Time. Rules." Sasuke opened his mouth and a string of unintelligible gibberish emerged. Kakashi took what he might have imagined to be a comforting step towards Sasuke, but it only caused the latter to back further into the wall.
"But Sasuke, don't be hurt or ashamed." Several more moments of silence dragged on. Sasuke thought desperately of a reply to this. All melodrama aside, he'd have liked to sit in a dark corner for about a week. And yet, here was his teacher giving him a direct order.
"It's a bit late for that. But I'll move on. I like you. You don't like me. Happens all the time. I'll be fine."
"I never said that I," Kakashi said, then stopped. He seemed to think better of his statement before he finished.
"Sensei?" Sasuke peeled himself off of the wall, inching towards his teacher. Kakashi's eye met his two and seemed to spell out a hundred different questions at once. Sasuke's left hand travelled upward towards the copy-ninja's facial mask. Kakashi jerked away, then instantly regretted it.
Sasuke's hand faltered as he reached to remove his sensei's mask. Kakashi remained still upon his second approach, however. Not only did Kakashi allow his student's hand to rest on his cheek, he seemed to nuzzle it, as if he ahd been long waiting for such a gesture.
"I," began Sasuke, but words escaped him. In a whisk of a moment, Kakashi's mask was pulled away from his devastatingly handsome features, and Sasuke's lips were matched to Kakashi's in a crushing embrace.
Whether the kiss lasted moments, minutes, hours, or weeks and weeks on end, Sasuke did not know. The only thing that mattered were Kakashi's warm hands under Sasuke's shirt, his hot mouth feverishly biting at Sasuke's, and the feeling Sasuke received when Kakashi pushed him back up against the wall. Several excited gasps, and neck bites later, reality seemed to hit both young men. Sasuke wrapped his unsure arms around Kakashi just as the latter realized what he was doing.
To the surprise of a still-delighted Sasuke, Kakashi pulled back from what had been almost more than a steamy embrace, his one eye wide in a fear-like countenance. One moment longer and they would have been caught by Gai-Sensei, who was running by at exactly that moment.
"Kakashi! Here you are! I was sent to find you," Might Gai paused. "Er, Negi asked about Sharingans and I couldn't help him." A significant look passed between the two men. Kakashi, without looking at the weak-kneed and embarassed Sasuke, nodded once and followed Gai out of the alley, disappearing into the celebration.
