An Unexpected Letter
Naruto's eyes narrowed with frustration and he bit back the yell that was threatening to escape from his raw throat. The three genin seemed to sense his anger and halted in their playful game of tag that followed an unsuccesful practice.
"I thought you said you wanted help?" The growl that emenated from the older teen's throat shook with surpressed rage. He had been hired by the late 3rd Hokage's grandson to help train said child's squad in order to be recommended for the Chunin exam. So far, the team had done nothing but taunt Naruto, make a mockery of his instructions, and played games with his mind.
"We do, Boss." Konohamaru smiled at Naruto playfully, unshocked and unphased when the smile was met by a nasty glare. Naruto had nothing on his mind but a shower and a phone call to Sakura and as far as he was concerned, being forced to remain here was going to bring out the worst in him.
"Then," Naruto said with a calm tone before pausing, "STOP FOOLING AROUND! NINJA DON'T PLAY TAG ON MISSIONS!" All three children sat quickly on the ground and Konohamaru's face clouded with a pout. Suddenly, the snapping of branches put a blanket on all out of control emotions. Several kunai flew through a near-by canopy, landing inches clear of Naruto.
For the first time in four days, Naruto's mind was driven from the mysterious call he had received from Sakura, the call he had not had the nerve nor time to return. His thoughts were not on the worry and yet glee in her voice. His concentration was on, however, the too-clean misses that the enemy was making.
With the "shing" of metal being drawn, the three children, Konohamaru included, drew their own kunai and took careful aim at the offending tree.
"No!" shouted Naruto, jumping from his targeted perch. "Not... your... fight," he spoke in between awe-striking acrobats through the air and on the ground. He disappeared for several minutes in the shadows of where the enemy was hiding.
"Boss?" Konohamaru's voice vibrated with faux bravery. As if on cue, Naruto jumped into the branches of the tree and laughed at his original perch.
"Sasuke, what are you doing here?" Rustling sounds occured before Sasuke emerged from the leafy canopy of the neighboring tree. He was smirking in a similar, yet more contained way than Naruto.
"How'd you know?"
"Any real enemy would not have missed me, deliberately or not. Nor would they denied themselves the advantage of chakra." The men jumped from their trees and shook hands, turning back to a stunned group of kids.
"Practice is dismissed. Tomorrow, however, come back with a readier attitude than you did today," he paused with a stern gaze. "Or else." The Squad gave a goofy salute and ran towards the gates to the Leaf Village.
"You still did not answer me," Naruto said. "What are you doing here?"
"Sakura seemed... almost upset. She called me about a week ago. I finally got a break at work and decided to visit. By the look on your face, I'm assuming you received a similar call?"
"Yeah. But I need a shower first. If you're not in a rush you can swing by my place for a bite to eat."
"No rush here."
