Chapter Two: Memory
Konoha City, Konoha
Fire Country
516 A.T.D.
Sarutobi considered the young man kneeling in front of him. He ignored the skeptical aura that emanated from the two Fire Country Advisors standing next to him, and the polite disapproval of the Jounin standing at attention in front of the door. His instinct, his heart, told him that this was the person he should use. The best – possibly the only - shinobi he could send on this long and dangerous mission.
The Sandaime suppressed a sigh.
If only he weren’t so damned young he thought sadly.
“Do you understand the ramifications of what I’m asking you to do?”
“Yes, Hokage-sama.” The young man replied, looking up at his leader, brown eyes serious.
The Sandaime searched his face and allowed a sigh to escape.
“No, you don’t.”
“Hokage-sama...?”
“Quiet.” Sarutobi said firmly. “I have no doubt that you are ready to risk death. You are a Konoha shinobi. You are a Chuunin. You understand the meaning of that monument out there. Your parents named are immortalized in stone, but their memory, and the memory of their bravery lives on.”
“I know that, Hokage-sama! That’s why...”
“Quiet!” Sarutobi commanded. The young Chuunin shut his mouth, pressing his lips together as if holding back his protests with effort. The Sandaime felt a pang of regret but allowed no hint of it to cross his face. “Risking your life is the least important part of this mission.”
“You must be willing to risk your name.” Mitokado Homura, one of the Council Advisors, said stringently. “And the names of your parents.”
“You must be willing to risk your own memory.” the Jounin, Aburame Shibi, added. “You must be willing to disappear - truly disappear- from this village entirely. You must be willing to be branded a traitor, nuke-nin.” The Chuunin sucked in a shocked breath. “The Hokage-sama and the Advisors will delay that for as long as they can, but your absence will be noticed. ANBU are not stupid.”
“Most importantly,” the other Advisor, Utatane Koharu said, her voice like spoiled vinegar, “you must be willing to kill a child.”
“Kill...?”
“We do not know what is waiting at the end of this road, boy.” Koharu said calmly. “You will only know once you get there. But we know that the Demon Fox is not a power we can leave in enemy hands. One way or another, the threat to this village must be neutralized. If that means the child must be killed, than that will become your task.”
“The Yondaime gave his life for this village, Irukaiyo.” Sarutobi said quietly. “His sacrifice must not be in vain.”
“Can you do it? Can you throw away everything for this? Your past? Your future? Your name? Your honor?”
Umino Iruka straightened up, squaring his shoulders. His eyes were clear and direct.
“I am a Konoha shinobi, Hokage-sama.” he said. “I can throw anything and everything away to save this village.”
