All's Fair...

ALL'S FAIR...

“When did you find out? That Iruka was...unfaithful.” Under normal circumstances, Gai wouldn't have asked such a private question, but, after a couple hours of imbibing inhibition reducing drinks, the thought didn't cross his mind.

Yamato quietly traced the rims of his empty shot glasses (he hadn't ordered any more after downing the first two). “About a month ago.”

Gai really didn't know why that made him angry. He didn't know why the thought of Kakashi and Iruka being together for a whole month before he knew about it made a ball of confusing emotions sit heavily in his stomach. It wasn't like Kakashi and his relationship was an exclusive one. Gai had always known about the copy-nin's tom-catting. ...But, then again, that's all it had been—tom-catting. Kakashi would spend a night or two with an unknown man or woman, but the next day he'd have returned. Of course he'd be wearing the same bored, I-could-care-less expression, but it couldn't ever hide the care in his touch. Kakashi let his passion show only when they were alone, he was a very private person after all. Gai had never felt threatened that his place would ever be filled in Kakashi's heart...Well, until now that is.

The Green Beast took a giant gulp of the amber-colored liquid in his glass (to tell the truth, he wasn't even sure of what exactly it was).

A month. None of Kakashi's flings had lasted that long. Gai had at first been confused by his lover's sudden coldness, his even more pointed lack of interest in whatever he had to say. The jounin had just believed it to be a funk; Kakashi was prone to fits of depression. 'He'll be back to his normal self soon,' Gai had thought. Well, it wasn't the first time he'd been wrong in his life.

“It's really sort of my fault, ya know?” Yamato stated with a self-depreciating smile.

Yamato's voice startled Gai from his musings; he'd forgotten about his surroundings, lost in his own thoughts. “What was that?”

The ANBU nin faced him. “It's my fault. That Iruka left, I mean.”

That was a little hard to believe. After only being with Yamato for a couple hours, it was already apparent that he was as mean-spirited as a shade tree.

“Iruka would complain that I held him too close, didn't give him enough room to breathe. He'd say that I made him feel like a woman.” The young man gave a heart-wrenching little chuckle. “I guess I just loved him too much to ever want him out of my sight.”

Gai's strong inner sense of justice surged at that. “Because you loved him too much? That's why you think he left you? Because you loved him too much!?” The jounin rose from his stool so quickly, that it went skittering across the floor behind him. It just wasn't fair!

Yamato's almond eyes had gone round with shock. As Gai started stomping towards the door, the wood-nin rushed to follow him. “Where are you going?”

“To talk some sense into that pig-headed little chunnin of yours.”

Yamato gapped like a fish when he saw Gai heading for the entrance of the motel. “That's really not necessary!”

But it was to Gai. How could someone leave a man who did nothing but love them? How could someone lie and cheat and be just so cold to a man who did nothing but love them?

Gai slumped against the motel entrance once he reached it, unable to actually go inside. His emotions had overcome him. How could Kakashi do this to me? It's just not fair...

“Gai-san?”

He felt Yamato's comforting hand on his shoulder, even if he couldn't see the nin through the shimmer of his own tears.

“Gai-san, you've had to much to drink. Let me take you home.”

The jounin didn't respond.

“Where do you live?”

Still no answer—Gai's throat was so tight with tears that he didn't know if he could speak, even if he had wanted to.

Yamato rubbed a hand through his hair and sighed. Leaning down, he helped the larger man to his feet. “Let's go home, Gai-san.” With a last look back at the motel, the ANBU nin draped Gai's arm around his shoulder, and walked through the dark village towards his home.
