The unraveling Shino
[Since no one wants me to leave this a one shot, I'll be adding short chapters whenever the mood takes me.]
A month after Kiba walked out on him, Shino stood staring into the mirror. His face was gaunt, his skin pallid. His hair had become shaggy and hung in greasy little tendrils. Hinata checked in on him every day, but she had no success in getting him to bathe. She was barely able to get him to eat enough to keep him alive. Shino stared down at the razor in his hand. He brought it up to him throat and held it there for what seemed like an eternity. Finally he scraped it across the stubble there, cursing himself for being such a coward. Suicide was for people who couldn't handle the pressure. Such people cracked and ended up in institutions.
When he finished shaving he pulled on a ragged pair of jean shorts and walked barefoot out into the yard. The benefit of living alone was yard access. He barely felt his foot come down on a piece of broken glass, and walked on heedless of the blood he was trailing. He reached his destination, a huge tree with lots of closely spaced branches. He used to lie under it with Kiba. Now he climbed up until the branches threatened to crack under his weight and settled into a naturally formed seat.
Hinata arrived a few hours later, letting herself in with the key she had made. She glanced in the bathroom and noted that he had at least shaven today. She looked in the bedroom and living room, and sighed. This again. He only got up into the tree when he was feeling especially down. After locating the first aid kit, she cleaned up the broken garden decoration and headed over to the tree.
"Shino! Come down and let me clean up your foot!"
"Why?" The single word drifted down through the leaves and was almost lost in the sound of the wind.
"Because if I don't you could get an infection." Hinata began taking off her loose coat and anything else that might get caught in the branches.
"What's it matter?"
Hinata sighed and began climbing. She perched on a branch near Shino and coaxed his injured foot to a position where she could clean it. After she got the blood off she saw it was deep enough to need stitches.
"Shino, I need to stitch this. Come inside please." Shino rolled his eyes and jumped down, landing neatly on his feet. He was silent the whole time Hinata was sewing his foot. She wondered if he even felt anything anymore.
She left shortly after and walked in the direction of Kiba's house. She had a few things to say to a certain dog ninja.
