Chapter Two

Yaoi(boy x boy) don’t read if you don’t like.

AN: Such a good response to this story makes me happy. The plot bunnies have been threatening me with unseemly things for about a week regarding this story. I am currently working on two other stories so this one may not get up dated but once or twice a week but don’t worry I always finish stuff. I also only work with happily ever after so don’t worry about the characters they will find their way. Responses to the story will be at end of story. Enjoy this chapter.EDIT: This chapter has been edited for your reading pleasure.

What Dreams May Come

Chapter Two

Naruto’s eyes fluttered open and he sat up slowly in the empty bed, the clone having long since dissipated. They knew he didn’t like waking up with the Sasuke clone. He just needed to feel him in order to get to sleep. It was a like a comfort blanket. According to Kyuubi, a very unhealthy comfort blanket.

He sighed and rolled out of bed. He hadn’t ‘needed’ the Sasuke clone in a while. It was just like Kyuubi had said, it had been unhealthy. A necessary evil to make it through the ages. Naruto had seen it as such when the pain of sleeping alone would become too much to bear. Even now, he wondered how he had survived so long without Sasuke. The days seemed to blend together to create a portrait of pain and loss.

Every so often, Naruto would catch a glimpse of someone that looked like Sasuke. A flash of pale porcelain skin or the raven wing black hair would draw his attention and stop his heart. It left him hurt and aching to find that the individual possessing these traits was, in fact, not his Sasuke. Those were the days when the pain of his loss would nearly cripple him.

“Please Kyuubi, I can’t bear it any longer. My soul is dying.” cried Naruto from where he kneeled in front of the cage.

‘I know.’ It whispered, a single tail pushed through the bars to stroke the quivering back.

“I saw someone today. He looked so much like him that I froze. All I could see was Sasuke dying all over again.” he whimpered.

‘It will be alright, Naruto. I will make sure of it.’ the fox whispered to the boy who had come to mean more to him than any other creature.

“Please, promise me it will be over soon? I don’t know how much longer I can take being without him.” Naruto whimpered. The fox sighed and Naruto knew it would be a very long time before his soul would be reunited with its other half.

“Just wait a little longer for me, Sasuke.” Naruto whispered. Swallowing his pain, Naruto and began dressing. He had slept for a good twenty hours. He slept not because he was tired physically, however, emotionally he’d been a train wreck. The memories and dreams of Sasuke coupled with the promise of release from his so called life had taken their toll on him.

Naruto stepped from his bedroom after several minutes, dressed in black slacks and a button down white shirt. It was something Sasuke would wear, which was partly why he dressed in it. Everything in his home was ‘something Sasuke would like’. The furnishings, the beddings, the painted walls. There had been much disagreement involved between the two when they had first moved in together.

“Hey, teme?” shouted a sixteen year old Naruto from the kitchen of the Uchiha manor.

“What, dobe?” asked the raven haired boy as he walked into the room and prepared a cup of tea.

“Lets redecorate the house. It needs more color.”

“Hn, and what would you suggest? Orange colored walls? Swirls on the ceiling?” asked Sasuke calmly as he took a sip of his morning tea.

“Hey, that’s not a bad idea.” grinned Naruto.

“Idiot.”

“Who are you calling an idiot, you bastard?” shouted Naruto as he lunged at Sasuke, who dodged the attack, gracefully. Naruto, on the other hand, landed in a pile on the floor of the kitchen.

“See just like I always said, one hundred percent pure dobe.” smirked Sasuke as he nudged his lover with a foot causing Naruto to pout and stick out his tongue.

“Don’t stick it out if you don’t plan on using it.” said Sasuke, before bending down to capture the pouting lips in a kiss.

Naruto smiled at the memory. That was one of his favorites. They had made love on the kitchen floor before finally making it out of the house to meet with Sakura and Kakashi. In the end, Sasuke had relented to redecorating but only allowed Naruto full control over one room. Much to his lover’s surprise, Naruto had chosen the kitchen as the room he could decorate any way he wanted. Naruto had told him since that was the room the ramen was kept in, it was his favorite room.

Surprisingly, Naruto had been very tasteful in the colors. It had been bright but at the same time welcoming. A lot of happy memories had been made in that pale orange kitchen. Naruto sighed, the memories hurt. They always left him feeling empty. However, the memories were the only thing that had saved his sanity through the ages, especially in the beginning.

Naruto steeled his emotions. Making sure his ’mask’ was in place, he opened the door to his house and stepped into the yard. The summer heat was harsh but what else could one expect from Fire Country. Naruto was glad that his body heat had always been a few degrees higher than normal people, probably due to the fact that his body housed two souls. He had never asked Kyuubi though. He wasn’t even sure if the fox demon would know the answer either and it was really a mute point.

Naruto strolled to his black convertible. Yet another possession that screamed Sasuke, though Naruto was the only one that would know that. Twisting the key in the ignition, the engine purred to life and Naruto pulled from the driveway.

The drive to Fire Country University, FCU to students and locals, was relatively short. The students wouldn’t be arriving for another week and a half. After the students arrived the streets would be a mad house. Traffic would go from a pain in the ass to a complete and utter nightmare. Finding a parking place would turn into a massive hunt. It would be complete and utter chaos and Naruto loved it.

About a hundred years ago, Naruto had enrolled in a few classes at a local college. For someone that came in dead last at the shinobi academy, Naruto excelled in the college atmosphere. The organized chaos that was college life had helped pass the time and took his mind off of his pain if only slightly. Naruto had taken every class he could, earning several degrees over the course of several years.

The only pain in the ass had been when he was forced to alter the dates on his degrees to fit his current incarnation. It had taken more than a few jutsus and all of his shinobi know how to arrange for Uzumaki Naruto to be eligible to teach at college level. He didn’t know why he felt the urge to teach. For some reason, it just felt right. ‘Iruka-sensei would be proud.’ thought Naruto as he pulled into a free parking spot.

Naruto got out of his car and walked towards the history department. Though he wasn’t a permanent professor, he did teach enough to warrant a small office. It was more of a broom closet really, but it served his needs.

“Uzumaki-sensei?” called a voice from down the hall. Naruto tossed his briefcase into the office and looked down the hall to see who was calling for him.

“Good morning, Kazu-san.” said Naruto to the department secretary.

“Dean Nemoto sent the class schedule along with the list of suggested reading material.” said Kazu as he handed the folder to Naruto.

“I’m glad that you are teaching a coarse this semester. It’s so much more cheerful when you are around.” smiled the secretary before returning to his office. Naruto smiled sadly. He had always been told that just his presence brightened a room, but the only one to brighten his heart was a memory of a man long forgotten by everyone but him. Naruto’s fingers clenched on the folder as a wave of pain went through his chest. Not a day went by that Sasuke wasn’t a part of his thoughts. Naruto had learned to live with the pain. It never got any easier but at least it was predictable.

Naruto walked back to his office and began to sort through the suggested reading material. A lot of it was worthless garbage. After several adjustments, he had cut the required number of books from six to three. He knew that many of the students would be grateful not only for the fewer books but also for the savings on their wallet.

“College is the greatest con of them all. Require six books per class and then over charge for them.” Naruto commented as he called the bookstore to cancel the unneeded books, then set to work on the schedule for the semester.

Naruto slumped in his chair. He had been organizing a syllabus and class schedule for several hours and the slight ache in his neck was proof of it. He’d taken Aki-sensei’s notes and adjusted them to get a feel for how the class would progress. Freshmen classes were usually the bane of every professor. The usually fresh from high school know-it-alls were loud, obnoxious, and had no idea how to things worked at the college level. Naruto loved it. This was the turning point for most of them. He would be the one that helped mold them into the people they would become. He took pride in it.

“Who’s dead last now, teme.” smirked Naruto.

‘You’re still a dobe.’

“I’ll have you know that I am widely respected in my field.” muttered Naruto.

‘Keep telling yourself that, dobe.’

“STOP CALLING ME DOBE, TEME!” Naruto screamed at the top of his lungs before he could stop himself. Slapping his hands over his mouth, Naruto sat wide eyed. It had been a long time since he’d had such a reaction to his imagined conversations with Sasuke.

“Uzumaki-sensei? Are you alright?” called Kazu from the other side.

“I’m fine, Kazu-san. I was just having an argument on the phone with an old friend.” said Naruto. After the footsteps had faded away, Naruto thumped his head onto the desk.

‘You’re such a dobe.’

Naruto grumbled to himself and stood. Locking the door to his office, he made his way out of the history building. He really had lost his sanity. Having conversations with his dead lover was definitely not the epitome of mental health. Not to mention, the conversations always left him aching inside. Tsunade hadn’t been kidding about being haunted by Sasuke. Naruto only wished he really was haunted. He could live without the physical if just to have Sasuke’s presence at his side.

Walking across the campus, Naruto strolled into the campus café. It was a pleasant little shop that provided the much needed caffeine fix for sleep deprived university students, as well as sandwiches and light meals. The walls were adorned with pictures taken at the university though out the years. The counter gleamed and the little elderly woman behind it smiled pleasantly to Naruto as he approached.

“Ah, Uzumaki-sensei, Its been a while.” said Yuki, the owner of the small café.

“Yuki-chan, you look as stunning as ever.” smiled Naruto brightly. The old woman giggled like a school girl as a blush flushed across her cheeks. She was a tiny woman but had an inner youthful glow that made her age irrelevant. She was the gem of this establishment.

“Go sit down, you scoundrel and I’ll bring you your usual.”

Naruto grinned and settled himself at a small table adjacent to a large window. He could see the quad of the campus from here. It was a nice spot to sit and people watch. Naruto did that a lot. He knew it was yet another of his unhealthy habits but he couldn’t help but scan crowds for the trademark gravity defying hair.

“Here you are, Uzumaki-sensei.” smiled Yuki as she placed the pot of tea in front of him. Though he didn’t ask, a small basket of fresh scones accompanied the tea. Pouring the tea into the matching cup, Naruto sipped the brew. His mind began to drift as it did so often lately.

“How can you drink that without sugar?” asked Naruto.

“Same way you can eat ramen all the time, its just what I like.” answered Sasuke.

“Can I have a sip?” asked Naruto. He really was curious as to why Sasuke drank the tea plain. Yes, he knew Sasuke didn’t like sweets but some things you just needed sugar with.

“What do I get if I give you my tea?”

“Umm, I’ll treat you to ramen.” said Naruto, his face scrunched up in concentration.

“Hn, what makes you think I want to go eat ramen with you.” snorted Sasuke.

“Come on. Pleeeeeease.” begged Naruto, his blue eyes going big and his lower lip poking out ever so slightly. A faint blush spread across Sasuke’s cheeks, so faint that it was almost invisible.

“Fine.” said Sasuke as he pushed the cup towards the blonde. Naruto grinned and took a sip from the cup. One sip was all it took. His face told what he thought of the drink. The pert nose wrinkled and the pink lips turned down in a frown.

“How can you drink that shit?” asked Naruto after he pushed the cup back towards Sasuke. A smirk appeared on Sasuke’s face.

“Its an acquired taste.” answered Sasuke.

“Well, how did you acquire it?” asked Naruto.

“Dobe.”

“I‘M NOT A DOBE, TEME!” shouted Naruto.

“Hn, so you say.”

“Lets go get that ramen, teme.”

“Don’t forget you’re buying.” said Sasuke.

“Shit” muttered Naruto as he trotted after Sasuke. “Hey, wait up teme. Don’t start without me.”

“Uzumaki-sensei?”

“Hmm? Oh, I’m sorry Yuki-chan. I didn’t realize I had been sitting here so long.” said Naruto with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“Its quiet alright, Uzumaki-sensei. I was just worried. You looked really sad.” she said with a small smile.

“I was just remembering someone.”

“Who?”

“A complete and utter bastard.” Naruto said fondly.

“What happened to him to make you so sad?”

“He died, a long time ago.” Naruto answered, his eyes remaining on the cold tea set in front of him. The old woman was silent for a moment before she spoke.

“You loved him?” she asked.

“Yea, more than anything.” he answered.

“You are too young to carry that type of sadness.” she said. Naruto held back a laugh. If only she knew. “I have a feeling things are going to change for you.”

“That’s the plan, Yuki-chan.” Naruto smiled. “Can I ask a favor of you?”

“Anything for a you, Uzumaki-sensei.” she replied.

“Call me Naruto. I have been coming in this café too long to remain Uzumaki-sensei.” said Naruto with his first real smile in what seemed like forever.

“Alright, Naruto.” she smiled, the wrinkles on her face crinkling. Naruto’s smile was brilliant. For a moment, Yuki was in awe. It literally lit up the entire café. He really was a stunning young man.

Naruto stood and laid the money for the tea on the table. As he exited the café, she hoped that the pain he was in would ease. If she was forty years younger, she might have offered to help him ease it. A very unmatronly giggle erupted from her as she began to wipe down the counter. The bell from the door drew her attention to the young man that was approaching.

“How can I help you?” she smiled.

“I’d like cup of green tea, please. No sugar.” he ordered.

“One of the professors here orders his tea just like that. Are you a new student?” she asked as the tea steeped.

“Yes, the fall will be my first semester.”

“Its so nice to see new students. My name is Yuki and I am the owner of this little café.” she said politely with a small bow.

“Uchiha Sasuke.” answered the raven haired young man.
